25.01.2022 Thanks Andrew for cooking up our veggies from the garden fir lunch. Delicious! Zucchini, tomatoes, chillies, eggplant

25.01.2022 TEENAGERS! Sick of them staring at their screens all holidays? Yup. Want them to get outside and get some sunshine? Please. What if they could learn to cook some family meals? In my dreams! And what if they could do it sustainably by minimising food waste? Do they even know what that is? ... We have a fantastic opportunity for you to push your teens out of their cocoon and into the community garden. Weve partnered with the clever team from Oz Harvest to bring you a series of 3 workshops specifically for 13-18yr olds to learn how to make simple healthy meals in our community kitchen. Oz Harvest are the champions of food rescue and have a dedicated education team to promote food waste reduction in our communities. No cooking experience needed! But you do need to book in ASAP as the 1st workshop is this Thursday. See the link attached. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/oz-harvest-nest-workshop-fo

23.01.2022 This is our Broadleaf papaya tree and it was getting a bit tall so we cut it down to a more manageable height. The tree will heal and produce new growth. The cutting will be trimmed and the stem left to dry before replanting again.

20.01.2022 Recently we participated in an event with NRMA Insurance and The Republic of Everyone to High Five passers by in Blacktown CBD to engage community. Every High Five contributed $5 towards the community garden We are amazed and so grateful to have been granted $6000 from this event The funds will go toward finishing several construction projects that we have slowly been chipping away at - professional irrigation in line with the water restrictions, a childrens play area and a new chook pen.

13.01.2022 So we’ve been doing this community garden thing for a while... This was a council event we participated in at Plumpton in 2011. We did so many of these community events in our early days, garnering interest in growing your own food and drawing in like minded people to join us. It was really hard work but so rewarding and now 10yrs later the community garden has far exceeded any expectations we had back then.

11.01.2022 Blackberry season and the whole garden is like a jungle in Summer. Thank you for your patience and continued support over this past crazy year. The community garden is open again to the public. All visitors are required to sign in and be mindful of social distancing and hygiene. The nursery is open but we don’t currently have a big range of plants for sale.... We won’t be planning any events for a while yet. If you would like to garden with us, please BYO gloves. Children are welcome but must be supervised If you are unwell, please stay home. Open Thursdays and Saturdays 9am-12pm

11.01.2022 See our new Secret Garden tonight on Better Homes and Gardens. Channel 7 at 8pm

10.01.2022 Its Volunteer Week and we want to give a big shout out to all our members Did you know that the community garden is entirely community run? Our members make all the decisions about what we do via our monthly meetings and all the gardening. Its a real team effort. Often our members commit extra time organising and running events that enable funding for the garden or spend many hours working on construction projects. People often comment on what a wonderful community garden we have in Lalor Park and it is all due to our members who have created it. Thank you!

10.01.2022 Our local op shop, Threads of Hope is turning 10! John and the team do some wonderful work for those in need in our community. They are now accepting quality donations at the store so if youve been cleaning out your cupboards at home, drop them there. Keep in mind that if your items are in the condition that you would buy them then they are ok to donate. Join them this Saturday to celebrate their milestone with a sausage sizzle 10am-12pm

08.01.2022 A helpful video from Self Sufficient Me. See his channel on YouTube for other gardening and self sufficiency videos. I hope you find them as interesting and entertaining as I do.

08.01.2022 The Hub Markets Lalor Park is on today and we will have a plant stall there selling our seedlings from $1.50 each. The community garden will open 8-10am

08.01.2022 We hope that with the lockdown restrictions easing, community activities may be allowed to resume in the near future In the meantime we have had a small team of members visiting the garden (just 1 or 2 people at a time) to keep things ticking over. They have been weeding, preparing garden beds, mulching and watering. Give them a wave if you are walking by.

07.01.2022 Our family of Blue Tongue lizards has grown and we’ve been sighting these young ones around the garden sunning themselves. Did you know that they eat snails and slugs They are great to have in your garden but you do need to keep your dog/cat away. Snail bait pellets like the Blitzem brand are toxic to many animals including those that eat snails and slugs like birds and lizards. Please consider the bigger ecosystem picture when you are trying to target one small pest. ... Blue Tongue lizards like to hide in sheltered areas like wood piles and you may see them sun baking out in the open. Provide some shallow dishes of water in the garden for them so they don’t get your dog’s attention trying to drink from their water bowl.

06.01.2022 As of 12:01am last night, COVID-19 restrictions have been eased for residents in Greater Sydney. Remember - if you experience any flu-like symptoms, please get ...a test and isolate until you recieve your results. I’m so proud of the way Western Sydney residents have been following the most up-to-date health advice to keep our community safe. We’ll beat this virus - together.

05.01.2022 The community garden will close for 1 week over Christmas and reopen Thursday 2nd Jan 2020.

05.01.2022 Go forth and garden everyone!

05.01.2022 Huge thank you to the wonderful team at Bunnings Warehouse Australia Blacktown for their ongoing support over the years. Yesterday we were finally able to install a hot water system into our outdoor kitchen. This is such a timely gift that will enable us to ensure proper sanitation when we reopen the garden. Thank you!!

05.01.2022 It’s magpie nesting season, please read the attached info to protect your local natives and how to avoid being swooped. Remember, magpies only swoop to protect their babies at great risk to themselves and only at perceived threats. We have had a family of magpies in the community garden for years that just hop around hunting insects and curiously watching us. They are never aggressive because we pose no threat to them. ... If you have a swooper; Don’t wave your arms or put up an umbrella Wear a hat & sunglasses Try to take a different route for the next 6 weeks Walk in groups rather than alone Be calm, don’t run, scream or throw objects at the bird it will only make you look more threatening to the bird

05.01.2022 Show us your giant zucchini’s! It seems that every week we are discovering these ginormous zuchs. They are still good eating, grate them into a quiche, stuff and bake them, slice and BBQ. No food waste here. What’s your favourite way to eat these giants?
