Melanie is a descendant of the Dharawal and Gumbaynggirr people, a mother of two and recently completed her Masters of Primary Maternity Care at Griffith University. She is the first Aboriginal woman in NSW and one of only two Aboriginal women nationally to have achieved this. She is leading the development of the Minga Gudjaga Midwifery Group Practice, an Aboriginal led and holistic approach to supporting positive maternal and child health outcomes for Aboriginal families in the region. She also leads Birthing on Country, a project to establish a purpose built freestanding birth centre providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women with a culturally safe place to birth on the South Coast. Lamaze Australia acknowledges the traditional owners of country throughout Australia and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders - past, present and emerging. Lamaze Australia also recognises the traditional birthing wisdom of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the importance of reinstating birthing on country. 15.01.2022 On the eve of my second baby turning 6, I find myself reflecting on if that was to be the moment I realised the power of the connection between women in the birth space and the birth nerd in me was birthed. I'm here setting up his balloon and presents for tomorrow morning but actually feeling like it's my birthday. This gift arrived today @rheadempseybirth I can't wait to delve into what I am sure to be my best investment of 2020. 6 years ago, I am 6 days overdue, I get a pho...ne call to say the labour ward is empty so just come in for the induction that was planned for 48 hours later. Nievely I leave my toddler with his granny and off I go. Fast-forward 6 hours I have had a rapid delivery in less than 2 hours and a postpartum haemorrhage of a whole litre of blood. Babies aren't meant to be born that quickly I am later told. But despite the chaos.....I felt nothing but safe. In the care of an amazing midwife who made me feel like I was at home. And my husband who came into his own as a birth partner. Something changed for me that day. The way Nicola held together the events of the birth suite, made me feel nothing but love for this little boy whilst really it was a car crash from the waist down. Without an epidural on board, having laboured unmedicated, don't get me wrong I felt every inch of what was going on in the hour after Mattia was born. But the care of those women. I will never forget. Maybe that was the light in me to seek a path to also connect to women. Who knows. I listened to @rheadempseybirth speak a week or two ago and yet another lightning flash struck me. My two academic worlds collided. Psychology and Birth. I cant wait to dive in. Am sure to be engrossed in every page. So happy birthday tomorrow Mattia. You might have been shot into this world with a bit of a stronger push than you would have liked but.you have not stopped smiling since. There is something different about u and its my pleasure everyday to watch what you are going to do next. See more

From your partner, from your mum, from your friend, from a doula, from your midwife. Evidence tells us continuous support in labour is shown to reduce epidural rates, reduce instrumental delivery with forceps or vacuum, reduce emergency cesarean surgeries and increase birth satisfaction amongst women who are continuously supported. Get creative with virtual support if you can't have everyone you want with u physically in the birth space. MUST Ask - what's the evidence? In late pregnancy and in labour women are often given suggestions by healthcare providers about ending pregnancy early when due dates loom, speeding up labour when dilation isn't always 1cm per hour, offering epidurals as a reward for having done so well to get this far but now you can be pain free. Ask what's the evidence? If mother and baby are in good health and there are no indications to suggest different, always ask for evidence as to why intervention is necessary. The choice is yours to say no even when you have heard the evidence as long as you are well and your baby is well. Informed decision making is vital to birth satisfaction.
