25.01.2022 Children will naturally do things that develop future life skills, through play and exploration. What a great example!

24.01.2022 Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs imaginable, and its also the most rewarding. As parents we often worry about our imperfections - what were doing wro...ng and what we could do better. Focusing on building connections with our children through positive play and interaction, being kind to ourselves, and remembering that were doing our best - helps to make us the best parents we can be. 23.01.2022 IAt Lancaster Preschool we are learning about floating and sinking, I have attached some examples of floating/ sinking tables you can use or make with your children to chart which items they find float and which ones sink. To take it one step further your child might like to predict which items will float/sink before starting the experiment!! #Science is fun!!

22.01.2022 Do you have a preschooler at home and need ideas for keeping them entertained/ occupied while overseeing remote learning for older children? The key to long periods of play and inquiry with young children is to think about engagement rather than merely keeping them occupied. Young children can spend hours engaged in creative, investigative play on their own when given the right opportunity. Here are some open-ended experiences that allow children to experiment and create...; - play dough, kinetic sand, dirt and water! - mixing together expired pantry ingredients - a bath with items they wouldnt usually use - a washing basket full of pegs - let them do the dishes with plastic dishes in the sink - jugs and glasses of water with food dyes - bowls of water they can experiment with. What happens to Lego in water? What happens to paper? What happens to a leaf? - a pair of scissors and the mail catalogues (this is also a great way to get children not interested in art/craft to develop their cutting skills - make a sheet called things I would buy at the shops and they can cut and paste) - small jars of water, glitter, leaves, herbs to make potions - a catapult made from a ruler - what can get flung across the room? - a screwdriver and an old broken electrical item - crush down old chalk to make paint - create car ramps out of books and off stairs - make a den or pillow world out of cushions and bedding - let them draw on the windows with whiteboard markers - make a land or world for their toys out of household items In other words, look for opportunities for your child to experiment and create and be ok with them making a big mess in the process... after all, no one is coming over to see the state of your house! Have fun

17.01.2022 Did you know insects outnumber humans 200 million to 1? Our little critters are small but they certainly are mighty, and together they play a vital role in the... health of our environment. Unfortunately, some of their great efforts can go unappreciated. Join the YRKA Stewardship Officer this Thursday, August 27, for our Little Critters in the Yarra Webinar. This webinar will discuss little critters, cover why we should build up their reputation and our Little Critters Toolkit. 15.01.2022 Play is an activity where children show their remarkable ability for exploration, imagination and decision making. The type of play children engage in and its purposes change over the course of childhood from infancy to adolescence. StartingBlocks.gov.au’s resource offers advice on why play is important for early years, and how it supports a child’s development and learning https://bit.ly/3muiPuS

13.01.2022 Make the most of the good weather this weekend and find some sticks!! Can you find a stick the same height as you? Can you find a stick the same height as Mummy?... Lets collect some sticks and... -count to find out who has carried the most. -line them up from shortest to longest -compete to find the longest or shortest stick And then of course you have to throw them: Who can throw their stick the furthest? These ideas involve concepts including estimation, counting and informal measurement. Give them a go next time you are out on a walk with your minis and littlies !

11.01.2022 To my kinder mum friends, I know that you're feeling nervous about your child being ready for school but please know that your little one is learning so much mo...re than you may realise during this pandemic. Children are learning about patience, resilience, and family connection. They have practised sharing and compromising with their siblings, managing a mixture of family emotions, and working through a new home based routine where it feels like everything has been turned upside down. The skills that your little one is learning during lockdown are more important than letters, numbers, and writing their name. They're developing life skills which us big adults could never have been prepared for. So as you worry about your child's school readiness, give yourself a pat on the back because you have supported your child through a storm that will prepare them for many years ahead. School readiness next year has been shaped by compassion and resilience. For that we should all feel proud. Letters and numbers can be learnt in time. Connection with our loved ones lasts forever. You have done an amazing job. No child has fallen behind. They have only developed new skills that we should all feel proud of.

09.01.2022 Thanks to all the wonderful kindergarten educators, Lancaster preschool is so fortunate to have such amazing staff!

06.01.2022 Using the kitchen scales- a simple and fun maths experience for young children. Let your child experiment with weight and number order by weighing household items (a great way to keep the younger ones busy if you need to help school children at home!) Very young children will enjoy seeing the digital number change or the dial move up and down as weight is added and taken away. They will also enjoy pushing down on the scale to see the number change- a great opportunity to talk... about pressure, weight and force. Older preschoolers may like to predict a number and see if it matches, or even document the weight of each item. Place a piece of paper and pencils on the floor and they can draw a banana and then record the number they see next to it. Other extensions could include playing which one is heavier? and comparing weights, finding two items that weigh the same, taking photos on an iPad of all the different weights recorded, or follow your childs lead as to how theyd like to use and understand how the scales work. You can enhance the experience by using lots of wonderful descriptive, scientific and mathematical words, such as; weight, number, recording, data, heavier, lighter, higher, lower, same, different, more, less, estimate, equal, predict and most of all... make it fun! 02.01.2022 The DOs and DONTs of Developing Your Young Childs Pre-Reading Skills DO: Do talk, talk, talk with your childfrom birth! The more words your child hears each day, the stronger her language skills will become. This, in turn, will support future reading development. Do believe that reading is important, both in school and in life. Know that your child is never too young to listen to you read. Do believe that you have the ability to help your child become a strong reader...Continue reading
