24.01.2022 LAST WEEKEND BEFORE THE DEMERSAL BAN The demersal ban kicks in next Wednesday at midnight. For 2 full months you are not permitted to take the likes of dhufish, snapper or baldies from the ocean. With good weather today the beach was busy with anglers heading out to sea to catch a feed of top quality table fish before the ban kicks in. If you're not fishing for them this weekend, you'll have to wait until December 15th for another chance. ... And if you're coming by road from Perth, have a look at the first of 4 new Drive Videos, Perth to Lancelin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAMGUxNHdak

24.01.2022 PLEASING COLOURS On a windless and cloudless day you can expect Lancelin to look like this. It's pretty nice huh. See you here soon and before your come, check out the Visitors' Guide at Lancelin.com.au

24.01.2022 CRAYBOATS IN THE MORNING LIGHT The rising sun lights up 3 of the 20 or so cray boats that call Lancelin home. About half the boats are fishing at the moment due to the Chinese suspending imports of our crayfish. Some of the catch is being sold locally from the back of the boat (order them here https://www.lancelin.com.au/product/live-lancelin-lobsters/ - there is still a handful left for collection tomorrow. ... Some is being sold frozen into Japan although at a significant discount to what the Chinese paid and the rest is being sent to Perth where it is either frozen straight away or cooked and then frozen awaiting distribution to retail outlets in Perth and elsewhere. The industry has been through tough times before, but Covid + the Chinese suspension has certainly hit the industry hard so if you like WA crays (and they are regarded as the very best) get your hands on some now, they're exceptional value at around 25/cray.

23.01.2022 SIZZLING SAUSAGES There are numerous free BBQs around Lancelin like this one at Harold Park. Grab some snags or chops from the IGA or Have a Chat in town and enjoy an al fresco feed in town this weekend.

23.01.2022 EDWARDS ISLAND VEHICLE ACCESS VOTE ON TUESDAY Some weeks ago the shire asked for public responses to their plan to outlaw vehicles on the beach at the Edwards Island Point. Remember, vehicles have been allowed on that section of the beach since they were invented. That aside, the shire announced the plans to discontinue that practice and asked you to comment. ... Well they received 113 written responses. That's a lot! They normally get a fraction of that number. So, what was the mood of the public? Well 12 of those written responses were in favour of closing the beach to cars permanently. 101 we against the closure. So, roughly 90% want to be able to drive to the point when it's safe to do so; again that's 9 out of 10 responses. And the responders weren't just locals. Indeed many of those who took the time to write were visitors to the town, visitors who bring in money, who support the local businesses, who go back and tell others, they market Lancelin to their friends and at no cost to Lancelin! They are VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE. Come Tuesday the councillors, armed with that information will vote on the matter. There is great concern in Lancelin that the councillors will simply ignore the public's wishes and toe the shire line. We will know if that's the case on Tuesday evening. And if they do side with the shire as opposed to mirroring the public's wishes, there will be no more (legal)driving on that part of our coast. See the list of responses on page 33 - https://www.gingin.wa.gov.au//agenda-ordinary-meeting-of-c

23.01.2022 A SOGGY PATROL This Nissan Patrol has certainly seen better days. It is parked in the Cunliffe Street carpark and has clearly spent some time in the ocean over the past 24 hours given the amount of sand inside the cabin. It appears from the comments that the driver may well have been driving erratically.

22.01.2022 PERFECT BEACH WEATHER Around noon, the easterly stopped blowing and Lancelin Bay was the place to be. Turquoise water, rich blue skies and plenty of happy people enjoying a dip. See www.lancelin.com.au for more info on the town and what to do while you're here.

13.01.2022 LANCELIN CARAVAN PARK GETS A FACELIFT The Experience Lancelin Holiday Park on the water opposite Edwards Island has this week laid new turf at the south end of the park. 11.01.2022 IMPENDING CHANGES TO MANAGEMENT OF LANCELIN'S DUNES At last week's monthly Shire meeting a proposal to advertise the Shire's plan to implement a new law allowing for better control of vehicles in Off-Road areas (like the dunes) was approved. Just as most agree that children and cars should not be playing together on the road, neither should they be sharing the same ground at the dunes which is what happens every day of the week at present.... Under this proposed new law, a dedicated sandboard area/s would be established minimizing the risk of vehicle vs sandboarder accidents. At present, scenes like this (pic 1) are all too common and mighty dangerous. The public will be able to comment on the proposed law changes at some point but as part of the dunes management, local associations like the LDCA have been pushing for an upgrade to the entrance (pic 2). The dirt track is a shocker and the car park near Beacon Street needs an upgrade given that the off road area is the town's no. 1 tourist attraction. The other vital requirement is toilets at the dunes. These changes will take time if they are approved but one would like to think that the dunes will be a lot safer as a result of them. Read the minutes of Tuesdays meeting here on page 265 - https://www.gingin.wa.gov.au//minutes-ordinary-meeting-of- See www.lancelin.com.au for all info on the town and activities.

10.01.2022 DARK SKIES AND HOWLING WINDS A strong South Easterly is hammering the coast right now resulting in only the brave being outside. None of the cray boats are fishing today but on Wednesday you can collect live crays from the jetty. Small, medium and large can be pre-ordered (starting from $25) and they will only have been out of the water for 11 minutes when you pick yours up. 10.01.2022 WATCH OUT FOR SNAKES This weekend's hot weather has seen a jump in dugite and brown snake sightings around Lancelin. This one measured about 50cm and was looking for a way into this house yesterday morning but it eventually gave up and slithered back into the bush. Dugites and brown snakes are deadly so if you see one, and you should on the lookout for them at this time of year, they will rarely approach or attack you if you keep your distance. ... Most times they will simply move away from humans and unless you feel immediately threatened by a snake, remember it is illegal to kill them. www.lancelin.com.au

10.01.2022 CRAZY FOR CRAYS With the Chinese suspending imports of WA lobsters some local fishermen have turned their attention to local sales under the recently introduced Back of the Boat program. You can now pre-order for next Tuesday at the SHOP at www.Lancelin.com.au Yesterday there was a gaggle of happy seafood lovers on the jetty waiting for the boat.... The mechanics of the scheme mean that when the boat docks, the sealed baskets of lobsters are weighed on the jetty and then must sit for 10 minutes before being opened. This is so that Fisheries officers can inspect the catch if they choose. After that, those who've pre-ordered their live crays/lobsters via the Lancelin website can pick them from the basket and walk away with a beaming grin. China's suspension of lobster imports has meant they are now sourcing product from elsewhere, including New Zealand. One source suggested that they were paying upwards of $110/kilo for NZ lobsters. Someone also stated that the NZ product is slightly different to ours, apparently sweeter. Can a lobster expert confirm if that's correct?

09.01.2022 DUNES ENTRY TRACK WIDENED Some welcome news for those heading to the dunes; the track is now significantly wider and the car park area near Beacon Road has been opened up. 08.01.2022 BEACH COWS UPDATE These 3 cows are still hanging out on the beach north of Lancelin. They've been around the area for a number of weeks now and this afternoon were spotted on the beach in front of the bombing range. They appear to be well fed and are tagged. There is action at the bombing range over the coming weeks so it's likely they will have to be caught as they they won't want to wander in there and cop an explosive on their noggin.... If you're heading to Lancelin this weekend, visit www.lancelin.com.au to download the Visitors' Guide, book your activities and click on the links to the 3 new Drive Videos.

08.01.2022 GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

08.01.2022 A STRIKING SIGHT Lara Scaddan looked a treat this morning riding her 8 year old gelding, Slim, along the beach just north of the jetty. A rich blue sky, turquoise water, white sand and a colourful parachute dress combined to provide a perfect photo opportunity. ... See www.lancelin.com.au to download the new Visitors' Guide.

08.01.2022 BEACH COWS IN TOWN Remember the cows photographed on the beach north of Lancelin? Well they've managed to work their way into town and right now are behind the Information Bay at the entrance to Lancelin penned in by the recently installed 3.2km long fence. Not sure if the fencing was meant to corral cattle but it has done just that. At present, rangers are contemplating options as these have apparently come from Woolka farm out near Cataby, quite a journey .... It's believed the owner is aware of their whereabouts but if they aren't rounded up soon, they may well be shot as they pose a risk to road users. Stay tuned for the outcome and head to www.lancelin.com.au for the new Visitors' Guide and to book a whole host of activities.

05.01.2022 BEN SIGNS COME TO OUR REGION Over the next couple of months you'll find 66 of these signs along our coast. What are they? They are BEN (Beach Emergency Number) signs, and here's how they work. Let's say you're on the beach in Lancelin or Guilderton, and someone needs urgent help. Assuming you've noted the nearest BEN sign number, you'd simply quote that to the emergency services and they will know where you are.... At present, visitors along the coast have little idea of how to accurately describe their location in the event of an emergency. These signs will be of great help to both those in need of, and those providing, assistance. This sign is at the bottom of the steps down to Guilderton beach.

04.01.2022 HAPPY HALLOWEEN Who's out tonight trick or treating?

03.01.2022 LEDGE LOOKOUT BURNT TO THE GROUND The Lookout at Ledge Point is no more following what appears to be the fire bombing of the wooden lookout. It's believed the attack took place in the early hours of this morning and at 10am, this was all that was left of the modest structure. ... This follows another fire on Walker Avenue in Lancelin on Nov 16th that left an area of scrub blackened. Police are into looking into both fires which could well be linked. If you have info, please call 131 444.
