23.01.2022 On behalf of Snapper Rocks Surfriders Club it is my honour and privilege to pay tribute to the recently deceased Wayne Deane, one of the clubs original members,... and offer our condolences to his family, Colleen and son Shannon, Jimi and Noa. In the early 1960’s Wayne was one of the hottest grommets in Coolangatta and regularly won many of those early Queensland Junior surfing events. In the mid 1960’s when I was learning to surf at Rainbow Bay along with Billy and Peter Grant, Rabbit and Bruce Perriot, we improved our surfing skills by watching Wayne and his brother Robbie carving it up at Snapper. In the 1970’s we also joined Snapper Rocks Surfriders Club and surfed alongside Wayne in many club and teams events over the years. We had enormous respect for him, he was the surfing foundation our club was built on, solid as a rock. Wayne served as club president from 1984 to 1987, always encouraging the club grommets, and like the long haired Braveheart, leading us into battle at teams events against other clubs. His contest record would take forever to list, spanning over decades, but I do know that he won multiple Queensland and Australian titles. Wayne embraced all the surfing disciplines including long boarding ( 1990 World Champion), short boarding and big wave riding. Some of the crazy stuff he did in those life threatening cyclone swells off Snapper, the Tweed bar and the Tweed Coast points is legendary. It’s one thing to paddle out in big reef break waves where there is a deep channel, but here in Cooly Wayne had to paddle out through the lineup. When everyone thought it was too big to surf Deany found that hard to accept and could be seen in his Holden panelvan on Dbah hill planning his attack on the Tweed bar. WD was the only surfer that I know in Coolangatta with a 10’ plus gun in his quiver in preparation for those massive days. He was a true waterman and loved a challenge. To me he was the Eddie Aikau of Coolangatta. Deany would go. His contribution to the sport is immeasurable and as such Wayne was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in 2003, one of the great pioneers of Queensland surfing. He was a phenomenal mentor of Snapper Rocks Surfriders Club and his legacy will live on through the Wayne Deane perpetual trophy. This is the club’s most prized trophy to be won at our end of year celebration of surfing, the Snapper Rocks Surfriders Club Open Club Championship. Wayne made this enormous trophy back in 1977 and fittingly was the inaugural winner of the event in that year and also in 1980. He has surfed at the Open Club Championship ever since then and always attends the presentation of awards that night to present his trophy to the winner. That’s the sort of bloke Wayne was, if the club needed trophies he made them, if he needed a surfboard he shaped it, and if he wanted a house he built it. He definitely was a Jack of all trades. It wasn’t just his surfing, it was the man himself, he had the respect of everyone, he leaves Coolangatta a better place than when he found it.
