22.01.2022 The current cover photo is of the Fairbairn Dam near Emerald. This was the centrepiece of the Emerald Area Irrigation project, building commencing in 1968. Many of these blocks were balloted. The original purpose of the scheme was to provide irrigation for drought fodder to support pastoralism, however the water now supports mining, cotton and horticulture among other crops, and continues to be used recreationally. This is one of the schemes that will be mentioned in my public lecture at the State Library of Queensland on 8th August 2019. 09.01.2022 How did this study come about? All because my father drew a block in the 1956 Billa Billa Hannaford ballot. That means he won the right to rent Crown agricultural land and retain it if he complied with certain conditions. Consequently we grew up on that land, and many people in our district also won their land in ballots. And it was these people, the balloters who created a community, from virgin bush.

07.01.2022 Over 60 people attended the public lecture last night. They were an interested audience with a lot of questions, many of which I could provide an answer to. Most people were keen to go upstairs to the white gloves experience and look at the library holdings which include books, reports, photographs and maps. The ballot box demonstration was a success; it was kindly loaned to the State Library by the Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying for the event.

06.01.2022 This is a photo of a ballot box. It is held by the Taroom Museum.
