18.01.2022 Citizen Science Project Implementation Seeking a volunteer for BRISBANE'S BIG BUTTERFLY COUNT around the Bayside Creeks Catchment. This project is sponsor...ed by Brisbane City Council and is being run by the Brisbane Catchments Network right across the catchments in the greater Brisbane area during the next butterfly season Sep/Oct 20 to Mar/Apr 21. The count will be run at all levels: from Lepidopterists to Citizen Scientists to school children. This project is a fabulous opportunity to re-establish and expand our group's community outreach, particularly into our local schools. It's also a good check on the environmental health of our catchments. We are looking for a volunteer who has availability during school hours, approximately 8 hours a week. We do this through community engagement, knowledge sharing, and delivering ‘best practice’ restoration using specialised weed control techniques. We provide the best broad scale vegetation management solutions with comprehensive plant identification and management options. Our project sites have diverse ecological significance and high biodiversity values. We specialise in threatened species recovery, erosion mitigation, revegetation, assisted regeneration and working at heights using integrated weed management techniques and minimal herbicide. The role In this role you will be undertaking various vegetation management and rehabilitation activities for private and council contracts as a lead member of a professional team. This role provides a varied and challenging experience across a range of endangered ecological communities and habitats. This is an opportunity to actively demonstrate your experience and capability in vegetation management and progress your professional development within a team that values its people, their careers and passions for the environment. In return you will receive above award $30/hr commencement rate, plus superannuation contributions, working in a fun and enthusiastic team that share a dedication to providing great results for our environment and stakeholders. Your position You will be taking a lead role, heading up the work crew on various projects. Ensuring the works are carried out with comprehensive efficiency. You will have extensive skills in leadership, field botany, plant identification of native and exotic species and industry ‘best practice’ management techniques. Competency with project management including reporting, scheduling and data entry for completing daily record sheets. Essential ACDC licence QLD driver’s license Transport Qualifications in Conservation and Land Management, Bush Regeneration or similar. At least 5 years relevant experience including vegetation management, bush regeneration, horticulture, landscaping or relevant land management roles. A general knowledge of vegetation communities including local native plant and weed species. Practical knowledge of work, health and safety practices and procedures. Ability to operate vehicles and field equipment. Physical fitness, self-motivation and ability to function in a team environment. Sound communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Alignment to FRE values, policies and codes. A strong work ethic. Desirable AABR Accreditation (Australian Association of Bush Regenerators). Level 1 chainsaw qualification. Senior First Aid & CPR. Minimum Certificate III in Conservation & Land Management (or equivalent experience) * Must be able to travel and stay in remote locations on a regular basis. Proven practical experience in bushland/natural areas restoration or vegetation management. Ability to adapt techniques over the duration of projects in accordance to varying environmental conditions to ensure best environmental outcomes Proven ability to mentor, motivate and provide feedback to staff Plant ID, both native and exotic ACDC license Class C driver’s license White Card Experience in using Bush Regenerating tools such as Augers, Brushcutters, Chainsaws along with the maintenance of these power tools Physically fit for the inherent requirements of the role Ability to work as part of a team or lead a team Desirable First Aid Chainsaw certification level 1 & 2 Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Resource Management or equivalent. Remote Area work experience Salary will be dependent upon the relevant skills, experience and competencies of the successful applicant but is above award.
