22.01.2022 A $3 million Heritage Agreements grants program has been launched to revitalise private land conservation and improve both environmental and economic outcomes. The Revitalising Private Conservation in South Australia program allows the state government to work in partnership with private landholders to conserve native vegetation and deliver practical outcomes. The $3 million grants program is now available to landholders who currently have a Heritage Agreement in place and wh...o are interested in improving their bushland. Revitalising Private Conservation in South Australia grants are available in two categories. Small grants of under $10,000 are open now until 15 September and large grants of more than $10,000 will open in March 2021. The program will be delivered by the Nature Foundation, in partnership with Trees for Life, Conservation Council, Livestock SA and Nature Conservation Society. 22.01.2022 Thanks to the @Nature Conservation Society of SA for this post! Native Vegetation Council slams draft Pastoral Lands Bill On Saturday, there was a story by Clare Peddie from The Advertiser about fundamental changes to the SA Pastoral Act that have been proposed (scan attached and link below). The changes threaten sustainable land management and nature conservation across more than 40% of South Australia.... The problems are: pastoralism is prioritised over all other land uses, and compels lessees to run sheep or cattle which threatens leases currently managed for nature conservation, a clause to allow for 'alternate land uses' such as nature conservation on leases requires approval from the Pastoral Board and the Minister for Agriculture, which is unlikely to be granted, there has also been a reduction in the oversight of stocking rates and an increase in the length of land tenure, the new Board is to be comprised of pastoral lease holders, with no requirement to include representatives from other user groups. Add your voice to ours by emailing Minister for Agriculture, the Hon David K Basham, to say you support conservation and sustainable land management in the pastoral lands. https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/subscribe/news/1/ National Landcare Network Landcare Aust David K Basham David Speirs MP

09.01.2022 Our South Australian RROs Justine Major and Matt Humphrey were pleased to participate in the Hawker Drought Muster last month. It was the first event the town h...as been able to put on since the COVID-19 pandemic and everyone was thrilled to come together as a community again. Having received some recent rain, there were plenty of smiles as local farmers compared rainfall totals. Though the recovery process takes time, the emotional lift from seeing green grass in the paddocks and covering the hills cannot be overstated. Justine and Matt were able to share information on drought and other rural and regional assistance with farmers attending the event. There were also reps from mental health support organisations, livestock agents and animal nutrition specialists providing info, and free haircuts for anyone who needed one! Locals were also treated to lots of food stalls and a jumping castle for the kids. 04.01.2022 In #LandcareWeek were celebrating all the wonderful volunteers around Australia who help make Landcare projects possible. One project that highlights the extra... special efforts of these volunteers in helping the environment involves two community landcare groups who joined forces to improve endemic iron-grass natural temperate grasslands in the Murray Darling region of South Australia. The group spent the first year of their priority project contacting landholders in their community likely to have native grasslands and doing broad-scale vegetation surveys. Their focus has now shifted to bulk native grassland seed production, to ensure the diversity of seed supply for native grasses, as well as lilies, orchids, herbs and wildflowers native to this grassland community. An added bonus is that these plants are useful fodder for stock and can be managed sustainably. Seed production areas at Meldanda, near Cambrai are set to produce large quantities of this seed mix for farmers in the mid-north to improve species diversity in paddocks, both for conservation and pasture production, which is big a win for this threatened ecological community. Recently, Kersbrook Landcare Nursery grew more than 3,000 plants which were transported to Cambrai and planted into the seed production area. This was thanks to Mid Murray Landcare SA, and the amazing behind the scenes volunteers who have done the hard yakka of germinating and planting them into the seed production area, ready for future seed harvesting. They managed to keep up this fantastic work even with COVID-19 restrictions. The project is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board (previously South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board), through funding from the National Landcare Program and the NRM Levies.
