24.01.2022 Feral deer are a big threat to our environment and to agriculture and a concern to Landcarers everywhere. 22.01.2022 After a brilliant victory for the Tigers on Saturday night, some might be wondering about the secret of their success. This ad in the Footy Record from some years back might be a clue. Winners back Landcare!!
22.01.2022 The BoM has declared that all key indicators of the El NiñoSouthern Oscillation have now reached or exceed La Niña thresholds. The seasonal outlook is for higher than media rainfall over most of eastern Australia. This could be great news for crop and pasture growth but might bring heavy rain and flooding. Now is the time for Landcarers to prepare.

18.01.2022 With 2/3 of Victoria used for agriculture, farming is at the heart of Landcare. We achieve our goals by supporting farmers to build natural capital on their land - and by celebrating their great work. Here's a new guide to assist.

16.01.2022 Its time to brush up on your birding skills Landcarers! Dig out those binoculars and sign up to the Aussie Backyard Bird Count. This is a great chance to demonstrate how birds appreciate the great work you've done on Landcare projects. And it's COVID safe!
16.01.2022 Gazanias, the pretty (awful) weed ... We found a single Gazania plant over 2 km from the nearest infestation! Gazania are a perennial, wind-dispersed daisy from... southern Africa, now widespread across Victoria. Sadly many people think they are wildflowers. But they’re not. They are evil weeds which can travel and invade undisturbed bushland. Worse, we have found that if you dig out a flowering plant and leave it, there is still enough energy in the root system to get the flowers to seeding stage. Now if we find one in the bush and we can’t take the entire plant with us, we pull each flower head off individually, as well as pull the plant out by the roots. This is a weed that will always be trying to sneak onto Raakajlim, because our nearby roadsides are Gazania factories. https://www.malleeconservation.com.au/blog/gazania
15.01.2022 Of interest to Landcare, the Invasive Species Council has recently published a report on the herbicide Glyphosate. Authored by Tim Low, the report discusses the risk of Glyphosate relative to other chemicals, and the implications that might flow if Glyphosate were to become unavailable for use. https://invasives.org.au//glyphosate-a-chemical-to-unders/
14.01.2022 Landcare is all about people managing sustainable and productive landscapes. This seminar presented by Fern Harmes at the Arthur Rylah Insitute will likely be of interest to many. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/ari-legacy-seminar-fern-ham

14.01.2022 Building resilience and innovation in communities enables them to plan for opportunities and threats. A healthy landscape needs people, and people need community support. This is what Community Landcare is all about
13.01.2022 It was not an ideal day weather wise, but a visit to a Clifton Creek Landcare Group site proved fruitful for new Landcare Facilitator Matt Stephenson as he was ...present when they pulled out the last remaining Fireweed plant at the site! Rye grass and Clover have recently been sown to keep the invasive Fireweed at bay. Matt is keen to assist the group to maintain momentum on control of the weed and said, "This is a really community orientated community led project with direct action and careful planning at the forefront. This is Landcare at its best ... 2000+ Fireweed plants 12 months ago and now here we are pulling out the last one. There will be more in coming seasons, but this is a terrific start." Well done Clifton Creek!! Maintaining social distancing, masking up and keeping on top of the the job safely!
13.01.2022 Great work here by Mitta to Murray Landcare demonstrating the power of partnerships and communication and showing how Landcare brings benefits to both agriculture and the environment.

11.01.2022 Sustaining the structure, fertility and stability of soil is core business for Landcare. Soil is the basis of agricultural productivity and biodiversity. Be sure to share your views about the protection and management of soil resources in this survey that will contribute to a national soils strategy.
09.01.2022 All over Victoria, Landcarers are working to protect water quality by revegetating streambanks. This report shows how important that work is in building landscape resilience to bushfires. https://theconversation.com/how-bushfires-and-rain-turned-o
08.01.2022 In the world of managing our sandy soils, African Love Grass has been quite a conundrum. Our journey of education and innovation is ongoing and extensive, full... of surprises and light bulb moments. It pretty much boils down to having diversity of green plants and soil biology and, crucially, strategic livestock management. By approaching our ALG using the wisdom of author Walt Davis, that "in nature there is no competition, only mutual benefit", we have made some very exciting observations. The African Love Grass plants are large, mature, alive and our seeder has cut right through them depositing a diverse mix of seeds and biology. These seeds have germinated and thrived. What is the relationship between all these plants? What is happening underground? Sometimes it is the very problem itself, if we listen and observe and react positively, that leads us to the desired solution, building layer upon layer of life and complexity. That's our aim anyway https://waltdavisranch.com/books Integrity Soils Ltd, Integrated Soils, Gippsland Agricultural Group, Healthy Farming Systems,NutriSoil, @Down Under Covers, Ferti-Tech, Nutri-Tech Solutions, @TopSoils

05.01.2022 La Nina may be here, but we are in a sunburnt country so must prepare for both droughts and flooding rains. A new round of NRM Drought Resilience Grants will support innovative NRM practices, systems and approaches that will improve natural capital and contribute towards landscape-scale drought resilience. This is a terrific opportunity for Landcare groups to work together and with partners to build resilience in communities, farms and our landscapes. https://www.agriculture.gov.au//nrm-drought-resilience-pro
05.01.2022 Congratulations to the Werribee River Association and the Port Phillip Eco-Centre for being selected as a finalist in the community category of the Premier's Sustainability Awards. In 2019 a total of 132 Workbees were delivered, engaging 2626 volunteers to protect the Werrribee River - a fantastic effort! https://www.sustainabilityawards.vic.gov.au//Port-Phillip-
04.01.2022 Feral deer can be a real headache for Landcare. They browse new plantings and established threatened species and communities, damage fences, degrade water quality, spread stock diseases and damage fodder and crops. The State Government has released a new deer control strategy that aims to improve feral deer control. https://www.environment.vic.gov.au/in/deer-control-strategy
04.01.2022 Drought resilience is a combination of sustainable farm management, sound farm businesses and strong communities. Landcare plays a key role in achieving this. The Australian Government has announced upcoming NRM Drought resilience grants, so now is the time to start planning your submission.

03.01.2022 The Upper Ovens Valley Landcare Group is doing a great job at the junction of the Buckland and Ovens Rivers at Porepunkah. By restoring native vegetation, their project will restore the condition of these iconic alpine rivers, protect water quality and contribute to biodiversity. Thanks to the committee and volunteers for their leadership. https://youtu.be/Xxk-dgM0x8Y
03.01.2022 Getting involved in Landcare is a great way for young people to make a very real contribution to the health of our environment and to build skills and community connections. The Youth Action Project Grant Scheme is calling for applications for young people to overcome the hardship created by COVID 19. Landcare could play a key role. https://www.fya.org.au/yapgs/
