24.01.2022 When waiting to meet Chief Judge Wager the security guard at the District Court makes a point to say Shes a lovely person, shes always kind to everyone. She ...never talks down to anyone in court and makes sure everyone understands whats going on. Part of this down to earth approach to the law may stem from starting her career at Legal Aid with then Director Len Roberts-Smith. Judge Wager said He insisted that everyone should be represented to the best of our ability regardless of their position and the strength of their case. It was wonderful training to have. In 2000 she was appointed as inaugural Magistrate of the WA Drug Court a position she particularly relished. The Drug Court was beneficial for everyone involved in the process, she said. Its rewarding to see people shine, and the flow-on effect of helping an offender break the cycle of addiction and crime is fantastic for families and communities. Appointed Childrens Court President in 2018, Judge Wager was determined to make the court a more accessible place, campaigning to have more flag poles installed outside. There were two already the Australian and State flags but I eventually managed to get two more, for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. Its important we acknowledge who we are dealing with: for many, English is not a first language and people may have language disabilities. A flag at the entrance and sometimes we flew a Gay Pride, Dockers, Eagles or other sporting club flag makes a court seem less imposing. In her new appointment as Chief Judge she draws inspiration from the oath taken by members of the judiciary which is inscribed on the District Court building: to do right to all manner of people according to the laws and usages of the State without fear or favour, affection or ill will. Those words are very important. They instil community confidence that those who come here will have their matters dealt with fairly, in a timely fashion and with respect.

23.01.2022 Not sure about the rules for using a phone while driving? Here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. Can I use a mobile phone w...hile driving? L and P platers cant use a mobile phone for anything whilst driving. If you are not a L or P plater then a mobile phone may ONLY be used to make or receive a phone call (defined to exclude email, text or video messages) and ONLY if the phone is either: - Secured in a mounting affixed to the vehicle - the mounting must be commercially designed and manufactured for the purpose and attached as the manufacturer intended; or - Remotely operated. The phone must not be held by or resting on the body (drivers pocket or pouch excluded) and there must be no touching of the keypad. Can I use my hand held phone on loudspeaker? Yes. If you are not an L or P1 driver you may use a mobile phone on loudspeaker providing that it is secured in a mounting that is commercially designed and manufactured and affixed to the vehicle in the manner intended by the manufacturer. You can also use loudspeaker if your phone is remotely operated. For example, if it is voice activated or through an earpiece or headset, and the phone is not held by or resting on any part of the body and there is no use of the keypad of the phone. Can I send a text message or email while driving? No. A driver is not permitted to send a text message or email while driving. Can I use my phone to make and answer calls if I am parked on the side of the road? Yes. It is legal for a driver to make or receive calls and use any other function of any type of mobile phone if the car is parked (but not stationary in a traffic queue or at lights). Can I rest the phone on my lap and use it on loud speaker? No. A driver is not allowed to rest or hold the phone on any part of their body. If the phone has to be touched to activate the loud speaker function it has to be secured in a commercially designed and manufactured mounting affixed to the vehicle in the manner intended by the manufacturer. If the phone is remotely activated it can be placed in the drivers pocket, or a pouch worn by the driver. Can I answer a call while driving? Yes. A driver is able to answer a call while driving by touching the phone or keypad if the phone is mounted securely in the vehicle in a mounting commercially designed and manufactured for the purpose of holding a phone. But if the phone is not mounted or remotely activated then a driver is NOT able to answer the call. Can I use a GPS/phone map while driving if I do not touch the phone? Mobile phones can be used for GPS functions whilst driving but they must be in a cradle designed for holding the phone. This link provides a reference: https://mylicence.sa.gov.au//t/mobile_phones_while_driving Can the police charge me for using a mobile phone while driving? Yes. The maximum court imposed penalty is $2,500. How come Police Officers can use their phone while on duty and driving? While on duty, drivers of police and emergency vehicles are excluded from prohibition of use of a mobile phone. More answers and in-depth information about mobile phone use in vehicles can be found here. We encourage all drivers to read the information carefully: www.dpti.sa.gov.au//inattention/faqs_on_mobile_phone_usage

10.01.2022 New Financial Year! Huge savings for typical South Australian family 1 July 2020 South Australians will be in line for significant savings for their water a...nd electricity from today, as the Marshall Government continues to deliver on its promise of driving down the cost of living. As from today there will be huge hip-pocket relief, which will deliver an average $200 per year saving on water bills. In addition to that, for some SA households there will be savings of up to $127 on electricity, which equates to savings of up to $190 on electricity since the election for some South Australian households. These savings follow cheaper ESL bills ($163.60), reduced car rego costs through lower CTP Insurance premiums ($100) and a doubling of sports vouchers for primary school kids ($100). Hardworking South Australian families are, on average, more than $660 per year better off under the Marshall Liberal Government since the election. We are delivering significant cost of living relief for families that will continue to ease the squeeze on household budgets right across the state, said Treasurer Rob Lucas. The contrast with the former Labor Government could not be more stark. Under the previous Labor Government electricity bills jumped $477 in just two years, the ESL increased by $168 for an average home and water bills increased by a staggering 232 per cent. After enduring massive hikes under Labor, hardworking families and local businesses finally have a government that backs them and keeps their promises on lower costs.

06.01.2022 Police are issuing a warning to people considering selling their cars online, after three men were arrested over an interstate fraud operation. It will be alleg...ed that on Friday 26 June, a man agreed to sell his Audi sedan after speaking to a potential buyer online. The victim invited the man to his house, where the suspect arrived with two other men. They agreed to buy the car for $19,000, and told the victim they would deposit a cheque into his account. The cheque was deposited via an ATM in Victoria, and was shown as pending in the bank account. The victim then handed over the keys to the Audi, and the three men left the house with the car. The victim was informed a few days later that the cheque had bounced, and he was left with no car and no payment. In a separate incident on Monday 29 June, the same thing happened to a second victim, who agreed to sell the same men a BMW sedan for $17,900. He was also told that a cheque would be deposited into his account which was done in the same Victorian location, and the second victim gave them the keys to his car, which they then drove away from his house. Today (Tuesday 30 June) both vehicles were listed for sale on a buy-sell-swap website. Both vehicles were being sold by the same seller for a reduced price. Police later located the Audi in a car park on Philip Highway at Elizabeth. Patrols monitored the car from a distance, then about 4pm police saw three men arrive in the second vehicle (the BMW). All three men immediately approached the Audi on foot. Police then converged on the scene and arrested all three men. A 20-year-old man from Craigmore, a 20-year-old man from Evanston and a 19-year-old Elizabeth Vale man were all charged with theft. They were all bailed to appear in court at a later date. Both vehicles were recovered and towed away for forensic examination. In both incidents the deposited cheques have not cleared and have never had any funds in the account. Police recommend that anyone thinking of buying or selling goods online use the following tips: -Arrange to meet the other person in a public place, such as a shopping centre or public car park to exchange the items -Ask for a receipt or some sort of proof of purchase -Keep a record of all transactions if you are paying for the item in instalments -Ensure funds are actually in your account prior to handing over your property, and not just pending transfer prior to completing any sale with a potential buyer. -If you believe you have been the victim of an online fraud, report it immediately at http://www.cyber.gov.au/report -You can also contact your local police station or the Police Assistance Line on 131444. -For further information about staying safe online, click on the following link: https://www.police.sa.gov.au//Scams-and-Cybercrime-Scams-F
