25.01.2022 My original post did not have these pictures

24.01.2022 Christening of new Expedition Ship Last night I attended the event in Hamburg Harbour. HANSEATIC inspiration is the second in a series of three identical new ex...pedition ships by Hapag-Lloyd. It was a spectacular event. My shots require a lot of 'dark room work'. In the meantime follow this link https://www.hl-cruises.com/ At the bottom of the page you find a number of short videos. Unfortunately the commentary is in German only Fortunately nothing that was said has any literary merit I, together with journalists and travel agents from around the world, am about to board the ship in a few hours time for a two day shake down cruise before her maiden voyage on Monday. Stand by for pictures over the next few days

24.01.2022 Cruising the Danube in Eastern Europe - a glimpse of the old ‘eastern block’ countries and cities. You could consider the trip as an history lesson, a brief look at centuries of wars and oppression to present day emergence into democratic times. All the while cruising in style on a beautiful vessel.

19.01.2022 Another destination that flies under the radar

19.01.2022 Sweden as a Destination? I have just spent more than three weeks criss-crossing this large country. I drove some 3,000km, caught three ferries and found a beaut...iful country with welcoming people and magnificent infrastructure. I drove for an hour or so on this lonely country road in the middle of nowhere. I saw about three other cars in either direction. Over the next hill was this little hamlet with a dozen buildings. The locals were putting their garbage bins out!! I saw the serene countryside around the Gota Canal, caught the ferries to and from Gotland, experienced the buzz of the old university town of Uppsala and saw thousands of lakes emerging from the surrounding forest. The Høga Kusten (High Coast) features small towns and settlements on the shores of deep blue inlets and bays on the rugged coast just north of Gävle. I travelled on the Inland Vågen (Inland Road) which runs parallel to the Inland Banen (Inland Railway) all the way to Lapland, the land of the Sami to the Arctic Circle and beyond. I stayed in two distinctive hotels, the Tree Hotel and the Ice Hotel, and bypassed dozens more. There is so much more which I did not see not enough time! Yes, Sweden is a travel destination, a worthwhile one if you ask me. See more

18.01.2022 The Ice Hotel One notable omission in the SMH article on Sunday was the Ice Hotel I am staying here tonight. I have never seen anything like it. I took over 70 ...photos of the interiors. No two rooms are alike. Each one features art by a different artist. This is ice carving at its best. I do not have enough room to show you the warm rooms, which are very nice, spacious and comfortable. The melting structure is the winter hotel. The 365 days hotel is inside the mound. This is one spectacular place. It is difficult to photograph in a dimly lit, all white environment. I hope the selection gives you a good idea anyway See more

18.01.2022 Gøta Canal, a river cruise with a difference Enjoy leisurely trip through the rolling hills of Central Sweden. The Swedes are such graceful and friendly hosts, the scenery serene and you can, if you want to travel on some of the oldest passenger ship still afloat. MS Juno was launched in 1874, MS Diana the newest one 1931. All ships are beautifully restored and maintained.... http://www.gotacanal.se/en/canalboats/ms-juno/ See more

17.01.2022 The Arctic One of the great privileges of this trip was to be able to travel by car deep into the Arctic Circle and see the vegetation change as I travelled fur...ther north. I travelled from the deep forests and frozen lakes in the south, saw the trees get smaller and smaller, turn to shrubs and end up with just grass, mosses and lichens. Scandinavia, thanks to the Gulf Stream, is the only place were you can take your family car or motorhome that far north. At 70N you are only 2,000kms from the North Pole. At 70 North in North America you are far north of Nome, even further north than Tuktuyaktuk in Canada’s North West Territories. You are in Permafrost country. I saw the effects of travelling north, but also witnessed the dwindling effects of the Gulf Stream as it reaches the Bering Sea. The Stream is still powerful enough to give Russia her only year-round ice free port at Murmansk, but he climate on the Bering Sea is much colder and rougher than on the west cost. The temperature jumped from around 5 during the day two days ago to 15 today. In the west, you are already seeing green grass and trees in blossom. In the East the grass is still brown and there are no trees. The landscape in the Arctic is stark, reflecting the harsh environment. It is often spectacular when the dark land combines with the blue of the sea and the white of the clouds on a blue sky. It is something that I have fallen in love with during my many trips to the Arctic in Europe and Canada. If you are looking for a holiday with a difference come to the Arctic. Whether you travel by car or take a cruise ship it will be a memorable experience. See more

15.01.2022 One of Australia's hidden secrets. I have personally done this cruise and can fully recommend it

15.01.2022 I have crossed the Arctic Circle I am now officially in the Arctic. Lots of the lakes are still frozen and there are mounds of snow around, but the weather has ...turned nice. 14, T-Shirt and shorts weather for the locals. Personally I just ditch the thermals. If you want to follow my route, today I drove from Storuman via Arvidsjaur to Jokkmokk Tomorrow I do a round trip to Kvikkmokk for the Sami Cultural Centre See more

08.01.2022 Ribe, Denmark's oldest town and cute as a button she is Dating back to at least 912AD most buildings are Heritage Listed. Look at the pictures of the Cathedral. This is what happens when a building takes 800 years to complete and each epoch builds in its own style. One place sure worth visiting and no sign of over-tourism here
