24.01.2022 The 2nd Landsborough football team to win a premiership came in 1960, after a long 40 year wait. This year now marks the 60th anniversary of that premiership. Again many legends of Landsborough feature and sadly many have now passed away. This side actually won back to back flags in 60 and 61, during the sides stint in the old Ararat & District Football association which ran from 1957 till 1964. This side defeated Caledonians 13.14 (92) to 2.5 (17). The following year they de...feated Great Western 13.10 (88) to 6.12 (48). 24.01.2022 Unfortunately, in the light of yesterdays announcement from the Premier and Chief Health Officer, regarding tightening of CoVid19 restrictions (in terms of the numbers permitted at indoor public gatherings) our AGM/Monthly meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Monday 22nd) at the Barkly Room has been cancelled. At this stage it is proposed for this meeting to now take place on Monday 3rd August, but only subject to a further loosening of CoVid19 restrictions. We will keep all members informed. In todays world things can change quickly. Apologies to all for the late notice, but hopefully we will all catch up again soon. Regards - The Committee Landsborough & District Historical Group.

21.01.2022 A couple of street scenes of Landsborough - 60 years apart. The first photo takes us way back to 1902 when a parade was held in the main street to celebrate the British victory at the relief of the siege of Mafeking in the Boer War. Looking south towards Elmhurst. The second scene is the street parade held as part of anniversary celebrations in March 1962. That too is almost 60 years ago.

20.01.2022 "The Weekly Times" was a valuable source of information for many rural towns, and there were pictorial features on Landsborough over many years. Way back in 1961, here are a few more photos of the locals - with many familiar names from the Sandlant, Aston, Hodgetts, Friend, Jolly, Browne, Molan, O'Callaghan, Amarant, Ellis, Work, Dean, Rattray, White and Leslie families. There is also a photo of the old telephone switchboard at the post office, with Barbara Trezise and the postmaster Charlie Turner with wife Lois - as well as Bert Little (along with son Ray) who was still in his old bootmakers shop at the age of 83 - and in which he traded for over 60 years.

20.01.2022 Todays Landsborough SS photo comes from 1990. Yes, thats 30 years ago now!! Our wonderful Secretary/Treasurer Diane Western was head teacher.

17.01.2022 A couple of scenes of Landsborough, with the old Aston Butcher Shop and the post office. Not sure who the young fellow is outside the shop, but if its anyone that we know be sure to comment accordingly. Best guess is that this is sometime in the 1960s.

16.01.2022 Hope you all enjoyed the Landsborough Football club article in the latest "Landsborough & District News". Thanks very much to Terri, Leonie and all the team who managed to get the latest issue out despite some major setbacks. The community will always appreciate your efforts. As it has been exactly 100 years since the first of the Landsborough premiership sides saluted, time to remember these local legends of 1920. The description of the grand final, where they took on the mi...ght of Joel, makes fascinating reading - it must have been a day to remember, if somewhat controversial!! "The 1920 flag was not without controversy, with minor premier Landsborough losing the grand final against Joel, but under league rules could challenge for a rematch which they controversially won by one point. During this match, feelings ran high and from the commencement of the game a howling mob of men, women and children over-ran the playing arena, making it impossible at times to distinguish the players. 90% of the onlookers left the ground in the belief the match had ended in a draw, but owing to the state of affairs it was impossible to check scores, but it appears that the Landsborough goal umpire discovered they had won by a point. After 6 further weeks of protests and deliberations the result stood, despite a certified goal umpires tally from the Joel umpire and sworn testimony from the timekeepers that the game had ended in a draw (Stawell Times-News, as referred to in History of Navarre Football-Netball Club 1911-2011, Louise Bibby). 1920 Premiership Team Back: Bill Ord (Cut off), Bill Leslie (with hat), George Aston, Bob Leslie, Ralph Aston, Fred Friend, Bill Work (with hat), Wally Petch, Harry Freeman, Charlie Peacock, Laurie Blake, Jim Hanley, Clancy Work, Ned Perry, Cedric Blake, Pat Lennon Front: Bill Crawford, Dick Blake, Billy Ffrench, Tom Hogan, Danny Oates

16.01.2022 Some more school photos - from the "Weekly Times" 1961. Landsborough West and also two of Landsborough. As there was no official school class photos taken then, this is the next closest thing....

15.01.2022 Who remembers the days of the manual telephone exchange in Landsborough? Here is the full directory of those that had a phone back in the 1960s and their location and numbers. The exchange was open 24 hours a day, from midnight Monday morning until 1.00pm Saturday. Then the events of sport on Saturday and church on Sunday took priority, although you could also make a call between 900am and 1000am on Sundays. The area covered by the exchange included Wattle Creek, the Malakoff, and Shays Flat. Phone number 1 was Charlie Aston, a long time resident of McKinlay St, his old house still stands on the right overlooking the entrance to the rec reserve. The Pub was relegated to No. 2, while Hodgetts store was No. 3

14.01.2022 Street Parades in Landsborough over the years. In 1918 the Landsborough Brass Band performed as part of a fund raising exercise to build the new public hall. This photo was taken from the top of the old Aston Butcher Shop. This was now 102 years ago!! Front Row: Bill Appelt, EB Dunn, Bert Little From 1956, another "Back to Landsborough" celebration was held, and a few photos are shown from that occasion, including the old coffee palace again in the background of the last photo.

14.01.2022 Coming soon....a history of the Landsborough School. From the early days of the common school No. 710 opened in March 1864, then the 2nd school No. 970 opened in 1868, which is now used as a work shed on Daryl Leslies property - through to the opening of the current school No. 1862 in 1877 on its current site in McKinlay St. Much of the historical information was compiled by Diane Western and Pam Dunn during their research into the "Lost Schools Of the Pyrenees" back around ...15 years ago and led to the publication of that book in 2009. This latest book completes the story with a detailed history of the Landsborough School, which of course continues to educate the districts children to the present day - complete with a list of the teachers, and also every student who ever enrolled along with the years they attended. Complimented with a huge number of photos, both past and present including class photos for all years that could be located. We hope to make the book available for purchase sometime in early December. Keep an eye on this space...more details as soon as we get them. Regards the team at the Landsborough Historical Group.

14.01.2022 Landsborough was connected to the electricity grid in March 1964. This edition of the "Weekly Times" dated March 11 1964 features photos of many Landsborough folk, both young and old who partook in the celebrations. You are sure to see some your relatives amongst these pictures

12.01.2022 Happy October everyone. The Santa competition will NOT be happening this year due to the current situation with the Corona Virus. It will return 2021 with a very special theme and wonderful prizes. October 2021 we will launch the competition. Please look after yourselves, family and friends.

11.01.2022 For todays Landsborough SS photo we head back 22 years ago to 1998 and a more informal setting.

11.01.2022 Todays school photo of Landsborough SS - 1983 saw a boom of enrolments, so the school photos were split into 2 groups - Prep to 2 and 3 to 6

08.01.2022 In 1977 the Landsborough state school celebrated its 100th anniversary. The occasion was marked with a special cake, and the youngest student of the school and the oldest living student came together to share the moment. The youngest student at the time was 5 year old Peter Browne, 5th generation descendant of John & Winifred who settled in the Malakoff way back in the 1860s.....he resides here today. He had to wait around patiently enduring endless speeches etc, but came ...through it with flying colours!! The oldest living student was 97 year old Ethel Perry (nee Aston) daughter of William (Harry) Aston and Mary Crowle, old storekeepers of Landsborough. She was born in 1880, married Robert Perry and resided in a farm on Shays Flat - her family was George, Ivy (Leslie), Arthur, Ollie (Emerson), Myrt (Bibby), Bob and Max. Amongst her grandchildren are current NG shire mayor Murray Emerson, and ex VFL-Wimmera footballers Greg and Chris Perry. Sadly she passed away only weeks after this photo was taken. A couple of other photos of the day were also located amongst the slide collection, and are shown here as well.

07.01.2022 Todays Landsborough state school photo heads back to 1969 - this rather unusual angle captures the students very deep in concentration. Top: Greg Carslake, Bernard Molan, David Hodgetts, Ray Murphy, Stephen Amarant Bottom: Andrew Murphy, Danny Molann, Danny Vendy, Michael Browne, Helen Amarant, Robyn Murphy, Aileen Browne, Kathy Vendy.

07.01.2022 Our monthly meeting/combined AGM is scheduled for Monday 22nd June at 5.00pm at the Barkly Room. This will be on the basis of changes to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions relating to the permitted numbers at indoor gatherings, and if there is any update we will advise members. Diane will send out the correspondence in the week leading up to the 22nd. Due to the lateness of the June meeting, there will be no meeting in July. The normal monthly meetings will resume on the 1st Monday of each month commencing with Monday 3rd August. Hope to see you all there.

06.01.2022 Sad to report that no Landsborough class photos were taken at all between 1958 and 1968, not until the latter year when John Souter took over as head teacher were photos regularly taken again. 1974 was the last of the black & white era for class photos. The wonders of colour photography were introduced from 1975. If you were an O'Callaghan, Amarant or Sandlant then you made up nearly half of the whole school!! Look out for the book on the full history of the school which wil...l be printed in the coming weeks. Every class photo that could be located is included. Landsborough SS the class of 1974 Back Row: John Marshall, Steve O’Callaghan, Dave Turner, Rohan Work, Lyn Johnston, Jacinta O’Callaghan, Margaret Sandlant, Ian Hodgetts, Sharlane Marshall, Craig Lindsay Middle Row: Sharon Delaney, Geri O’Callaghan, Dannie Johnstone, Phillip Marshall, Margaret Amarant, Gaye O’Callaghan, Sandra Sandlant, Brendan Amarant, Dennis O’Callaghan Front Row: Mark O’Callaghan, Ian Sandlant, Leanne Leslie, Joanne Jolly, Tim O’Callaghan, Damian Browne, Jillian Ellis, Leanne Lindsay, Steven Delaney

04.01.2022 The Landsborough State School Class of 1958 now has names. Here they all are: Back Row: Pauline Browne, Ann Browne, Melville Aston, Billy Ellis, Wally Aston (hes the one pulling the face!!), Pat Brown, Peter Matthews, Greg Dean, Jo Brick, Helen Turner 2nd Row: Miss Fisher (Teacher), Garth Turner, Peter Friend, Valma Ellis, Marion Marland, John Turner, Kay Hore, Diane Leslie... 3rd Row: Gary Leslie, Maree Browne, Maree Vance, Daryl Leslie, Shane Friend, Gary Matthews, Jim Browne, Barbara Turner, Peter Sandlant, Frances Browne Front Row: Frank Aston, Helen Browne, Anita Vance, Brian Sandlant, Pam Perry, Patricia Friend Teacher: Mr Black

03.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who contributed and messaged us to put names to faces in this old school bus photo from 1949. The bus behind the group is actually Williamsons (Stawell) although the Navarre one outside Stawell Tech is Sandlants. There are both Landsborough and Navarre kids in the photo. The bus driver (wearing the hat) is Charlie Driscoll. The girl inside the bus is Shirley Aston, below her to the left is Laurie Vendy, to her right is John Mathieson. Moving towards the rig...ht is ?? then Don Hoffman, Ian Leslie, Marg Thomas. On the far right (sitting) is Nancy Palmer, behind her is John Comitti (or possibly a Vance?). 3rd from the right (sitting) is Carmel Vendy (married Pat O'Callaghan). Next to Carmel at front is Ivy & Dawn Work. Left Side: The blonde haired kid to the left of Charlie Driscoll is Jim Holden. Kneeling in front of him (in school uniform) is Bernie O'Callaghan and next to him on right is Robert Bibby from Navarre. Roberts older brother Jeff Bibby is in the white shirt in middle of photo, to the right of him (below) is Len Perry, to the left of him is Ron McKinnis. Once we can visit Lowe St nursing home in Ararat to see Ian Leslie, as well as Eventide in Stawell (to see Carmel O'Callaghan) hopefully we can identify the rest. See more

03.01.2022 Another photo of the Landsborough Coffee Palace & Wine Bar, this time going way back to the days when Jack Aston owned it. Lots of people out front, but sadly no information on who they might be.

02.01.2022 1934 Landsborough State School now has a full list of names. Many familiar family names amongst this lot of students.

02.01.2022 Just going through the final lot of photos for inclusion in the Landsborough PS book, this one has been found - but no captions or student details with it. Im guessing late 60s/early 70s but hopefully some of the faces can be identified to enable us to date the photo more accurately....

01.01.2022 Its 18 years ago and the 13 pupils of Landsborough Primary School are photographed with teachers Marg Pilgram and Wendy Byrne. 2002. Look out for our book on the History of Landsborough School 1862 - 2020 - it should be released in November. Plenty of old photos of the early years of the school, and class photos for most of the later years as well. Plus an alphabetical list of every student who ever attended the school from Day One, and the years they attended. Details of how to order a copy will be available on here. Be quick, as it will be a limited edition of 100 copies.

01.01.2022 Sadly yesterdays "road map to recovery" offered very little to rural areas in terms of a realistic re-opening of many of our community facilities and small businesses - other than a late November possibility based on virus numbers in entire regional Victoria. In particular no indoor gatherings will be feasible for our historical group for the foreseeable future. On this basis, the October and November monthly meetings are also cancelled. We will aim towards some type of get-...together in December if it is possible, but we will wait for further developments. We are all disappointed and there is a sense of despair and hopelessness out there at present - but we will get through this, and our group and indeed the wider community will emerge stronger than ever. We have maintained a good presence thanks largely to our support from the team at "Landsborough News" and also Craig at the Pyrenees and Ararat Advocates. Look out for our ongoing contributions to those newspapers, and please support them all - and look out for our regular postings here. Despite the impacts of the pandemic, we have remained very active throughout and plenty of exciting projects are now in the pipeline. Regards from all the team at the Landsborough Historical Group.
