23.01.2022 Technical Film #7: Types of Environmental Assessments Damien Chappell provides a brief overview of the types of environmental assessments that are commonly used on projects, often alongside contaminated land assessments. A broader range of assessments might be necessary when considering cases such as; due diligence, approvals for greenfield developments, residential sub-divisions, schools and manufacturing facilities.... The environmental assessments discussed here include: - flora and fauna assessments to ensure that the intended or current site use will not negatively impact ecological values of the site; - cultural and heritage assessments to identify and manage aboriginal and historical values; and - auditing of compliance against environmental management plans, systems and legislation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1-dgmy-fdM

22.01.2022 As an organisation full of like-minded people, our employees feel very strongly about the protection of the environment and the positive impact we can make when we work together. Landservs Geelong team recently attended a screening of Defend. Conserve. Protect, a Sea Shepherd documentary showcasing the battle between Sea Shepherd vessels and the Japanese whaling fleet to defend Minke whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary (Antarctica). The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctu...ary is an area of 50 million square kilometres surrounding the entire continent of Antarctica where the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has banned all types of commercial whaling. Despite a ban on all whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, Japans Whale Research Program continues to hunt Minke whales in the Sanctuary. Research has proven that deep diving marine animals are an essential part of the marine eco system by fertilising feeding grounds with enough nutrients to sustain krill population growth. Krill play an important part in exporting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The research also noted that past global declines in marine ecosystems occurred about the same time as whale stocks were decreasing during the industrial whaling era. This Sea Shepherd documentary focuses not just on the amazing work Sea Shepherd do to protect these endangered whales but also reflects on the change humans can have in protecting the environment if they work together.

07.01.2022 What a terrific day we had at the Melbourne Corporate Triathlon on Sunday 3 March! It was quite a hot day but the Landserv crew punched above their weight, fielding 3 crack teams the Green Smoothies, the Espressos and the Mojitos. Most impressively, we took 3 of the top 4 positions for the Environment Industry category and yes, it does feel good to beat our competitors!... So well done everyone, especially the Green Smoothies Ellie, Charlie and Jim who came in at 58 minutes 25 seconds. They were 90th out of 424 teams and so were in the top 25%. Afterwards we celebrated over lunch at the Republica caf and several athletes were rumoured to have fallen asleep with full bellies in the back seat on the way home. Will the defending champions return next year? Watch this space.

04.01.2022 Technical Film #1: Contaminated Land in Victoria In this video Damien uses his experience working on the Bayside clean up project to describe the types of contaminated land issues common throughout Victoria. Contamination of land in Victoria is often the result of previous management practices before environmental regulations were enforced. It is estimated that there are as many as 10,000 contaminated sites across Victoria.... Some situations where contaminated land assessment and clean up are performed include: - Due diligence when purchasing land or property - As part of planning permit applications (especially when changes to zoning are needed) - In response to Clean Up Notices or Pollution Abatement Notices (CUNs or PANs) issued by the EPA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBflpncD-3E&t=28s
