24.01.2022 In the 1950s it was proposed that the estuary of the River Tamar, named Port Dalrymple, be changed to Port Launceston. At this time the estuary had been named Port Dalrymple for more than 100 years. Governor Hunter of New South Wales had given it this name around 1798 following the first European sighting of the inlet by explorers Bass and Flinders. The name itself recognised the colourful Alexander Dalrymple, who was then the hydrographer to the Admiralty in London. The prop...osal to change the name was the subject of considerable press publicity and public controversy. The Nomenclature Board resolved at its meeting of March 1955 that due to the historical significance and longstanding nature of the name, Port Dalrymple would be retained. For history and information on this and thousands more names across Tasmania, make sure you check out www.placenames.tas.gov.au

22.01.2022 In these modern digital times, where we have so many digital mapping choices, the continued popularity of the paper map is a pleasantly surprising trend. Even with so many options now available, a large percentage of the community still wants a paper map to have and hold. 21.01.2022 Land Tasmania has released an updated Hillshade layer for Tasmania via LISTmap incorporating the recently acquired Flood Recovery Mapping LiDAR data. The LiDAR data has a significantly better depiction of the landforms in a number of areas previously only covered by contour data. The Flood Recovery Mapping project will add around 12,000 km2 to the current LiDAR coverage for the state, with the data freely accessible at https://elevation.fsdf.org.au

20.01.2022 Mapping and GIS Tools for accessing LIST data. Land Tasmania has created a set of mapping and GIS tools for use with Esris GIS software product ArcMap (ArcGIS Desktop). DPIPWE ArcMap Tools is a custom-built toolbar for ArcMap, originally developed inhouse by Land Tasmania staff. This toolbar has been made freely available to all ArcMap users in the Tasmanian mapping and GIS community. DPIPWE ArcMap Tools provides users with a range of functions, including the ability to qui...ckly and easily add LIST data to ArcMap, search and zoom to locations in Tasmania and automatically open LISTmap to the same location as ArcMap. Long-time users will now notice that LIST web service access tools use HTTPS and the Google Earth Synchronisation tool can be used with Google Earth Pro. 16.01.2022 In the days before the Tasman Bridge some roads were classified as only acceptable for horse transport. Lets take you back . . . At the outbreak of World War I...I, it was realised Australia did not have suitable topographic maps so emergency mapping organisations were set up in each State. In Tasmania, mapping was undertaken by the Lands and Surveys Department. This beautiful map, produced for defence purposes at a scale of 1 mile to 1 inch (1:63 360), was released to civilians some time after. You can now take a piece of history home with you. Order your own reproduction online at www.tasmap.tas.gov.au/do/product/HMHOB63

14.01.2022 Up-to-date information is crucial in any emergency. It helps authorities to establish the extent of a flood, fire or storm, predict the potential impact of the incident, mobilise the response, warn the public of future dangers, and manage post-incident rehabilitation work. Our role within Land Tasmanias Emergency Services (ES)GIS team is to help inform these decisions by gathering and dispersing real-time data through various mapping products. 14.01.2022 With the introduction of GDA2020 as the new Australian datum, all new TASMAP maps are now published in GDA2020. But what does this mean for map users? Well, nothing to be honest. At map scale, the change is imperceptible. For example on a TASMAP 1:50 000 topographic map, our largest scale mapping product produced, the difference between GDA94 and GDA2020 is less than 0.02mm on the map. This is much less than the smallest spec on a map and 10 times smaller than the average printed line.
