I dont know if its the NQ heat or just the term 4 assessment workload, but the kids are exhausted and Mamas not feeling much better! 22.01.2022 || THE || highlight reel...Ive been thinking a lot about this one lately. As the Mum of teenage girls, trying to prop them up in a world full of highlights and unrealistic images and recounts of the everyday, its a constant for me. I have the insight (and age, theres lots of that) to see this and not let it get to me, but so many younger folk, and just as many older ones really struggle with this. Remember, most of us only show you what we want you to see, the nasty, down... and dirty, day to day messiness of life that we all experience isnt always on show. I could snap a pic at the physio and tell you Im just back from another massage at my local, woo hoo, lucky me, I get to go and have a massage every second day, yay...this is a fact, but what I mightnt tell you is that its at the local cancer centre and its for cording, which is an uncomfortable complication that can occur after mastectomy, and, this particular type of massage is the single most painful experience IN-THE-WORLD! So, peeps, I may be rambling, but what Im trying to say is try not to take the highlight reel of others too seriously. See it for what it is, a nice pic or story to brighten your feed and hopefully make you smile, but see your life for what it is, real, raw, and beautiful. 19.01.2022 || HAS || anyone elses nesting hit a new level since youve been hanging at home more? Mine certainly has. Meet Bert, friend to Ernie who is over in the other corner, he found his way home with us from @bunnings yesterday...hubbys bbq finally gave its last breath over the long weekend, so, yes, before you jump up and down, the trip was considered essential as 92% of our meals are cooked on our bbq and I didnt want to starve my family . . . Weve also sanded (ok, hubby ha...s sanded), and painted (that was all me) and oiled all of our old furniture. I decided I wanted a more Hampton/Scandi look and everything we had was Balinese style dark mahogany. Hubby was refusing to let me upgrade, which in hindsight, Im actually pleased about. Many meals have been shared at our 21 year old dining table, and some of those that have shared with us are no longer around so Im a bit sentimental about those types of things...I did get new chairs though as the old heavy wood ones kill me since my surgery, my upper body strength just isnt what it used to be. Its been such a treat seeing what patterns and different types of wood pop up on each piece underneath that rich reddish brown stain. The teen years certainly bring about new and difficult challenges, but the love and friendship these girls have shown as we all navigate these new paths together amazes me and fills my cup every day. Thank you girls, @_lara.hh and @chee_tah04 for teaching me to be the best mum I can be xx

17.01.2022 || hello || SUNSHINE Well, what a week...and a bit. I have gone to write this post and stopped so many times, but as I drove around doing some little jobs today, I started to cry uncontrollably and am trying to work out why, Im hoping putting words down will help. My little town is hurting, a lot of North and North Western Qld is. My own home wasnt affected in any way by the floods, getting about was difficult for a few days, it was hard to buy milk and bread, my kids sc...hool is still closed, and Im sick of not being able to do any washing, but our home and belongings are fine...and for this, I feel so fortunate but somewhat guilty that we get to come out of this relatively unscathed. I have friends who have lost everything, their cars, treasured possessions, photo albums, all their furniture, I have friends who are currently in temporary accommodation for months on end, little units with all their kids, who have lost their toys, their school supplies, everything. I dont do drama, Im not after sympathy, thats why I kept putting off writing something, I dont want you to get the wrong idea, Im just trying to get my head around whats happening in my town, to the people I love, the places we used to love to go that have closed indefinitely, the things that make this home for us. A couple of days ago, I popped out to grab a few groceries, I took one of my girls with me and she hit the nail on the head with her observation. In the middle of Coles, she stopped pushing the trolley and said Mum, I can feel a sadness here. Everyone here just looks so sad. She was right, while folks are holding their heads high, some getting on with the mammoth cleaning up ahead for so many of them, others that havent suffered directly but know folks who have, there is a sadness behind that NQ bravado, a new depth in their eyes that betrays their smiles. I love Townsville, we moved here as a family 6 years ago out of choice, to enjoy a quieter life, away from the hustle and bustle. I love this town, I love the people in it, and my heart breaks for what many are going through. I feel helpless and I feel sad. Ive been wracking my brain trying to find ways to help and have decided for the next 2 weeks, 50% of every item sold in my online store will be donated to the Premiers Flood Relief Appeal. Its not much but Im hoping its a little something we can give back to this town we love, this town we call home. 17.01.2022 / OCTOBER / is breast cancer awareness month Being an advocate for your own health is so important. If you have been putting off that appointment, mammogram or ultrasound, just do it, make the time. A couple of years ago I decided to take my health into my own hands. Being told you have a genetic predisposition to breast cancer is a scary thing, there were lots of appointments, lots of specialists, lots of my own research, then one year ago today, I underwent a preventativ...e double mastectomy. While it was considered an elective surgery; when the alternative is cancer, is it really elective? It was a pretty clear choice for me and my family. A genetic risk that increases my chances to 7-8 times the national average just wasn’t good enough in my books. I feel very lucky to be living in a time when there is growing awareness of the part genetics play in cancer outcomes. I had options now that a breast cancer diagnosis would have taken away from me. I feel confident that, in the future, my daughters will have even more choices thanks to organisations like National Breast Cancer Foundation and Pink Hope Has this path been easy? Hell no! Is it just a glorified boob job? Pfffft...if I had a dollar for every time I’d been told that in the past year, I’d be a millionaire. I’ve had quite a few complications from nerve damage and cording, to loss of strength and motion, to lymphatic issues, as well as my surgeries having to be done 1500km away from home. Do I regret my decision? Never. The constant fear of not ‘if’ but ‘when’, the 6 monthly routine of mammograms, ultrasounds and MRI’s; as well as the associated worry each time I had to go back for additional scans and biopsies; that’s now my past and no longer my future A year on, I’m gradually learning to accept the changes to how and what I can do, what I can wear confidently...swimwear is a nightmare when you can’t feel nip-slips. I’m trying to be kind to myself and the changes that have happened to my body since the surgeries, I’m learning to be proud of what my body can do all over again #livingmybreastlife So, as we hit the middle of October #thinkpink and remember that you know yourself better than anybody else does. If something doesn’t feel right, push for answers. If you want to look down the genetics path due to a family history of cancer, do so, don’t let anyone hold you back. Knowledge is power and can put you in the drivers seat

14.01.2022 || HAPPY || World Teachers Day! Sending all the educators out there a big thank you for all you do, you are simply amazing. I have been a school teacher for 15 years, and a daycare worker for 6 years prior to that. I have cared for little ones from 6 weeks old, up to 12 years old. Teaching is a job I have found truly rewarding some days, while other days, I have thrown my hands in the air and wondered why Im doing it. Teachers do cop a pretty bad rap at times, if I had a d...ollar for every time Id had my shorter work hours and longer than most holidays thrown in my face, lets just say that I wouldnt have to work anymore. But the hours put into thinking and worrying about my students when I should have been thinking of my own children, the unpaid lunch breaks where I have been busting to go to the toilet but have spent the time supervising students and keeping them safe in the playground instead, the holiday and weekend time spent researching learning disabilities, strategies for students, new curriculum information, completely new curriculums, data, making resources, marking, writing reports; those moments are the ones I think of when I hear folks rubbish what I do, if only they knew. I understand that some parents have had a bad experience with a teacher at times, like any profession, there are a few crappy ones out there. But, most of us are in it for the love of it, to witness a light bulb moment in our students, to form a connection that makes a child hungry to learn, to find a new way to get something across to our students that makes it click, to truly make a difference and create a lifelong love of learning; thats why we do what we do and we thrive on it. 13.01.2022 || its || the little things that make a love grand in my opinion Tomorrow marks 23 years since my very first date with hubby. We were babies, I was 17, he was 23, and we met in the Maccas drive thru where I worked. Rather than saying yes to the I tried to upsell, he wanted my number (yes boys, that does work). Our first date was a romantic evening of McDonalds for dinner, Jumanji (the first one) at the cinema, and a late hot chocolate at the Mooloolaba Coffee Club. ...Simple, but it sealed the deal for me, I was smitten. Hes not a romantic in the regular sense, he wont remember tomorrow is a special day, Ill need to remind him. But every Sunday, he and I do the groceries together - on our own, kid free, its almost like a date. And every Sunday when he pushes the trolley alongside me, he sneaks off at the entrance and grabs a bunch of flowers for me, without fail. He pops them in the trolley, sidles over to me as I mull over the all important decision of which bag of lettuce blend to buy, and says these are for you, then plants a kiss on my cheek. Its the little things in life that mean the world, be sure you see them in the everyday and cherish them See more

12.01.2022 || international || womens day Im not a believer that we girls run the world alone, I have a husband who loves and respects myself and our daughters, and together as a team, we are making our mark in this life, helping each other climb to new heights and reach goals ... What I am, is a believer in equality and balance. I want my girls to live in a world of equal pay for the same role as their male colleagues. I want my girls to live in a world where men and women work together as a team for the greater good of humankind. I want my girls to live in a world where they dont fear men, but are respected by men. I want my girls to live in a world where they feel safe in the presence of anyone and everyone My daughter told me today that a couple of boys at her school commented that International Womens Day was a waste of time and that women didnt deserve a day. She asked me if there would be any boys at her school that would be respectful towards girls like her Dad is. These conversations scare me, not only as a mother, but as a woman. What role models do these boys have at home and what messages are being sent to them? 09.01.2022 || I || have heard and seen it all over the last few weeks, admiration, anger, annoyance, you name it, teachers have been on the other end of it. Its been a tough job to be in of late and one that has seriously made me question humankind more than once, made me question my career path and choices. What I can say is that I have seen my peers tackle new challenges that, 6 months ago, would have seemed an impossibility. Challenging times have taken their toll, morale and work r...elationships are strained as folks fall apart at the seams while trying to manage the facade that parents and students want to see, need to see, during these times. Its certainly been an interesting time for all of us.
