24.01.2022 'Tis the season to be jolly at Kindy Cove! Santa's elves (also known as children and staff) have been busy creating festive decorations using recycled materials and temporarily re-purposing classroom objects. Kindy Cove's toddlers helped sort the bottle caps into different colours before planning their placement on the Christmas wreath. The pre-schoolers made use of pine cones, sticks, bark and cardboard to make decorations, wrap presents and create a fireplace and Christmas tree. Well done Kindy Cove on these wonderful decorations! If you have any green tips for Christmas, why not share your ideas and go into the draw to win a $50 Lane Cove Gift Card? Find out more: https://bit.ly/3ra2EoP

23.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY: Do you know how Dettmann Avenue in Longueville got its name? The Dettmann name has a very long association with the Longueville area. The connection was already established when Dettmann Avenue was first named in 1891 with the second subdivision of the Tambourine Bay Estate. The first members of the Dettmann family to arrive in Australia were Louis (Carl Frederich) and Caroline Dettmann. Both had been born in Germany and had married in London before their ...Continue reading
23.01.2022 Happy National Wattle Day! You may have noticed bursts of yellow around the area lately and thats because late winter is the time you will see many wattles come into bloom and Sydney Golden Wattle is arguably one of the most showy in Lane Cove. Also known as Acacia longifolia, this plant is quick-growing, hardy and flowers brilliantly. As with many wattles though, it is relatively short-lived. Aboriginal people used seasonal flowering to indicate availability of food and the... movement of wildlife. The local Cameraygal people knew the flowers of Sydney Golden Wattle indicated the arrival of certain fish species such as mullet to the area. This wattle also had many other purposes, such as edible seeds and medicinal uses. Did you know that you can use the leaves of this plant as a soap? Try grabbing a handful of leaves, add a little water and rub vigorously to produce a lather and give your hands a clean! See more

23.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY: Located on a ridge of the busy Pacific Highway at Greenwich is a small park scarcely noticed by the thousands of commuters who pass it each day. If you stop in its small semi-circular roadway you get extensive views over both the Lane Cove district and the city of Sydney. In the 1930s the site was recognised as ‘a wonderful vantage point, offering unsurpassed panoramic views of the Metropolis and the surrounding countryside.’ Representations were made to C...ouncil and government to acquire the few remaining undeveloped lots in the vicinity for posterity. By 1936, with the urging of the Parks & Playgrounds Movement of New South Wales, three lots were acquired by the state government and one by Lane Cove Council. The site was handed over to council for use as a public reserve. The name Coronation Viewpoint was given to the site in 1938 to commemorate the coronation of King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. During 1953 further suggestions were made to commemorate the coronation of Elizabeth II as Queen through the addition of a locality indicator. The task was taken up by local groups and sporting bodies who contributed to the cost. On December 12 1954, a plaque was dedicated to record these events and was unveiled by the Mayor Ald. G. O. Venteman. Children from local youth organisations and schools also planted commemorative trees on the day. During World War II, Lane Cove Council had zigzag air-raid trenches dug in a number of locations. Coronation Viewpoint was one of these public sites. The trenches were for motorists, residents or shoppers who may have been caught outside in the unlikely event of an air-raid. In 1965 Coronation Viewpoint Park was awarded a ‘highly commended’ in The Sydney Morning Herald Garden Competition for the small public park category. In addition, the Rotary Club of Lane Cove proposed a plan for the beautification of Coronation Viewpoint as its annual Community Service Project in 1967. The plan included making a focal point for the park which included a fountain. The final design was a combination of sculpture and water, with a ‘flame’ of bronze to give it height and substance. The sculpture was designed by Otto Steen and named the Rotary International Fountain. The overall project was overseen by Loyal G. Figgis of Figgis & Jefferson Architects and was completed in 1968, with the official opening and unveiling by Mayor Archibald W. Mackinnon on 9 July 1968. 20.01.2022 JUST IN: The restorations to the cistern at Carisbrook House are now complete! Built in 1884 and now owned by Council, Carisbrook House is Sydney’s only house museum to capture the middle-class lifestyle of the Victorian era thanks to Lane Cove Historical Society who has curated the interior. The underground cistern dates from the early days of the house and was originally used as a water supply for the residents. To help visitors see the results of Council’s 2014 renovation ...of the cistern, Council recently constructed a cover and viewing platform around the cistern following guidance from a heritage architect. When visiting Carisbrook you can now use the two new accessible walkways and enjoy a clearer view of the cistern and restored pump. The area has also received a lighting upgrade, including improvements for night viewing. Additional signage and photographs will be added next year. These works were supported by funding from the NSW State Government with a Caring for State Heritage Grant and a Metropolitan Greenspace Grant.
20.01.2022 You may have noticed a pink blush forming in the gardens and bushland which announces that Christmas is coming... yes, it's the glorious Christmas Bush or Ceratopetalum gummiferum! The early settlers of the colony of New South Wales certainly recognised this native bush which commonly grows along the east coast. It was enormously popular as a cut flower, with boatloads sent to the markets in December. Another native herald of the festive season is Christmas Bells (Blandfordia... sp), which displays a circlet of striking crimson to yellow flowers in summer. They can still be found scattered at this time of year in Sydney's bushland. These native plants can be grown at home to give your place a distinctly Aussie Christmas feel! Preferring full sun to part shade, both these plants require well-drained soils to do well. Regular watering in dry periods is important, especially to promote flowering. Christmas Bells make an excellent pot plant and Christmas Bush, while it can be slow to establish, is a long-lived shrub providing the perfect Christmas decoration.

19.01.2022 Did you know the Greater Sydney region has the highest known density of Powerful Owls anywhere in Australia, supporting 10% of the 6,000 strong NSW population? Council is supporting Birdlife Australias Powerful Owl Project, providing funds to help monitor these threatened owls in Lane Cove, collect ecological data and educate the community about habitat conservation. These birds face many threats including loss of habitat (from urban expansion, tree removal and the recent bu...shfires), exposure to rat poisons, death from car strikes and increasing competition for hollows. These owls need large hollows which only develop in trees over 80 years, which are becoming rarer in Sydney. One of the activities has been to trial a new nest box, designed specifically for temperature-sensitive owl breeding. These have been placed in areas across Sydney including Greenwich. Volunteers are monitoring the current breeding season, but unfortunately we are yet to see any chicks in the nests around Lane Cove. To find out more and to get involved, please visit: https://bit.ly/32tDTIs

04.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY: Do you know how Amalfi Place in Longueville got its name? Amalfi Place Longueville takes its name from the grand mansion named Amalfi which stood in the area until 1958. The original property was about four acres bounded by William Edward, Mary and Kenneth Streets. Richard Sim, a Sydney flour miller, leased the property from North Shore land speculator, Richard Hayes Harnett in the early 1870s and built a singlestorey sandstone cottage on the site in 1873....Continue reading
03.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY: Do you have special Lane Cove Christmas memories? 2020 has Christmas looking a little bit different so we thought we’d share some of Lane Cove’s past Christmas traditions with you. As you know, Santa has always been at the centre of community celebrations and particularly for the children in our midst. In 1959 Santa Claus was scheduled to arrive in Lane Cove on a huge decorated float accompanied by the Fairy Queen and her fellow fairies. However in 1968 S...anta had become a little elusive and the Lane Cove Chamber of Commerce had to advertise for Santa to hand out balloons and sweets outside the Lane Cove shops. We can’t forget the lighting of the Christmas Tree celebrations that began in 2005 and the rapturous looks on the children’s faces when the tree lit up. And since at least 1994, who can forget Santa at Greenwich Wharf on Christmas Day? Families gathered for a meal is a common theme for the season and the river has always attracted families for picnics. The Sydney Morning Herald in 1900 recounts that the ‘steamers running up the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers were extensively patronised and the day was a pleasant one for outdoor recreation.’ One suspects that a lazy afternoon was then spent lying on cushions as people watched leisure craft make their way further upstream. Many of us have gathered in the Plaza with candles for the carols since at least the 1990s. In 1898 The Sydney Choral Society made their way along the Lane Cove River singing for the community of Lane Cove and Hunters Hill. It must have been a beautiful sight to behold. Many of our Mayors have spoken about Christmas and its significance to the community. Mayor, Albert Shaw said in 1957, ‘The spirit of joy, friendliness and of goodwill affords abundant opportunities , but to help on those values of human life which, after all, do give meaning to our very existence Will you make a better approach to Christmas this year?’ While Christmas may look different to many of us this year, we hope it’s filled with joy for everyone.
