19.01.2022 Eighteen members of Langen Suka have been in Solo for nearly five days and we've been immersed in music and dance almost since we stepped off the plane. On our first full day in Solo, we met our teachers Bapak Wakidi Dwidjomartono, Bapak Aloysius Suwardi, Nyi Mulyani Cendhani Laras and Bapak Darsono Hadiraharjo, and sanggar host and coordinator, Dr. Kathryn Anne Amerson, at the new sanggar (arts centre) in Klodran, where we are studying for the next two weeks. We were fortu...nate to arrive in time for the opening of the sanggar, featuring the famous Punjangga Laras gamelan klenengan. Some of us didn't quite make it through the five hours of amazing music, but a good number managed to stay until the 1am finish. We've now finished our third study day at the sanggar, including lessons across most of the instruments in the gamelan. Some members have been getting advanced instruction on instruments they've been learning for some time, while others have had the opportunity to try new things for the very first time. On top of three and a half hours of lessons, practice and rehearsals each day, we've also been visiting some cultural destinations. We were lucky to be in town for the rehearsal of the sacred Bedhaya Ketawang dance, which is only rehearsed every 35 days at the Kraton Surakarta, and today saw the dance rehearsal at Pura Mangkunegaran. Of course, we've also made time to share some laugh over food, or in becaks! Thanks to a number of Langen Suka members for sharing their photos.

12.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who came and supported our fundraising concert on Saturday night. We look forward to keeping you updated on our study trip to Solo in July. Special thanks to dancers, Vi King Lim, Randal Perkins and Suara Indonesia Dance. We would love to see any photos or video you might have, so please tag us, or share them here.

11.01.2022 We had such a wonderful time performing with Suara Indonesia recently. You can catch them performing dance from across Indonesia tomorrow night in Newtown, raising money to support their upcoming tour to Europe. If you can't make the concert, you might like to support their Pozible campaign at https://pozible.com/pro/suara-indonesia-dance-europe-tour-1.

04.01.2022 If you're free and/or in Newtown this Saturday evening, come see our Javanese gamelan group perform at the beautiful St Stephen's Anglican Church (the one surrounded by Camperdown Memorial Rest Park).
