22.01.2022 Why Kids Have Sensory Issues with Clothing Each of us and every kid has a unique sensory system. We each have sensations that we like, don’t notice, and avoid. Some kids have more of those preferences than others. This all depends on their own individual brain, which is why it varies so much from person to person. Sensory issues with clothing become a concern when they start to interfere with a child’s ability to function in daily life. In these cases, a child may have Sens...ory Processing Disorder (SPD), or other diagnoses like ADHD or Autism. But lots of kids have a sensory sensitivity to certain types of textures and no diagnosis. Sensory issues with clothing are specifically related to our sense of touch or the tactile system. Some brains are getting so many signals that the item of clothing are on their body, that it’s hard for him to focus on anything else. They perceive this as uncomfortable and begin to become agitated even at the thought of putting the clothing item on. Most kids that have sensory issues with clothing will often react this way. In fact, it could even be full-out tantrums and total fits over a pair of socks. As parents, it’s frustrating and exhausting. It can also be hard to understand why they can’t just put the pants on. We may even force them to. But, our kids are literally yelling out because those pants might be downright painful. They aren’t being bad when they refuse to wear jeans, socks, or whatever, it’s simply how their brain works, and they don’t quite know how to put that into words. except from by Alisha Grogan MOT, OTR/L "The Best Solutions for Clothing Sensitive Kids" Want to read more..... https://yourkidstable.com/sensory-issues-with-clothing/

20.01.2022 It's the end of students first week back at school here in Qld. I know for many students it has been exciting to see friends again and get back to face to face learning. Some have a new found appreciation for school. If, however over the coming weeks your child seems anxious, is displaying a desire to control situations, or is experiencing separation anxiety, please get in touch. We may have strategies to help. https://www.languageoutloud.com.au

19.01.2022 Would you rather prevent a fire? or continually have to put fires out? Sometimes when everything is rolling along smoothly we are lulled into thinking all is ok and we (or our children) don’t need support or new strategies. Then along comes a new challenge or trigger and we are back in fire fighter mode. At LOL we know that skills taught during the calm can be learnt with less resistance so they are in the toolbox ready for when they are needed. We support you and your children to develop strategies to help you through the challenges and triggers. In time and with practice you will find the fires are decreasing in intensity or possibly no longer flaring up. www.languageoutloud.com.au

17.01.2022 Communication is a learnt skill. Many of us learn to communicate both verbally and with body language innately through our interactions as young children with adult role models. However, for some this does not happen so easily. Often, it is when a child goes to school and feels the frustration of not being able to clearly express their ideas needs or feelings that the struggle is really seen. We love hearing about how the strategies we are providing both parents and children and the skills developed in our sessions are enabling these young people to see greater success at school and at home. www.languageoutloud.com.au

16.01.2022 A conversation could change a life..

16.01.2022 Language is such a rich and vital part of our society. It enables us to communicate our needs and wants. We can express our feelings, or we can interact with others to debate or grow ideas or to share stories. We see a range of behaviours that can indicate a child has not adequately developed their range of vocabulary. They may display great frustration and become angry or upset or they may sit quietly, retreating into themselves, feeling anxiety about the possibility of bein...g questioned. Reading stories (and inviting and asking questions), games like eye spy and regular questioning about experiences and story retelling all help to develop a rich vocabulary. Here at Language Out Loud developing language and building skills to effectively communicate is fun for children and adults. We ensure we use the interests of our clients as a platform to engage. www.languageoutloud.com.au See more

13.01.2022 Imagine having your brain moving so fast it is ten steps ahead of your mouth. You are not aware that the words in your head are not known to the person you are interacting with. There is such frustration because you cannot understand why they do not ‘get’ what you are saying. For many of the young people we work with this frustration is a reality. Using games, play and conversation we are able to help them develop the skills to communicate the whole picture. Creating opportunities to develop the language and practicing strategies to slow it all down so they can express themselves clearly helps them have more positive interactions, reducing frustration and anxiety for both young people and adults. www.languageoutloud.com.au

03.01.2022 Please like and share!! When you have a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like dances and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditioned organisations and clubs. But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. De...spite their tremendous efforts, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and assignments a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parent and child alike. This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness. For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognize their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people. Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface. Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted!! If you choose, please copy and paste this in honor of all children who are deemed "different". Our world would be far less beautiful without them.
