22.01.2022 2020 Final Lessons Learned // Make hay while the sun shines Countless individuals, families, SMEs, corporates and Governments found themselves with severe liquidity issues during the year. With balance sheets likely to take a decade to clean up, many individuals and organisations were reliant on emergency funding sources as a means of survival. This may have included those having to use a rare early access to one’s superannuation account, or in having to apply for Government... income support benefits for the first time in their lives; all the way through to distressed corporations having to borrow funds at junk rates for emergency working capital. The extent of this desperation could next time be cushioned by holding a prudent pool of savings, liquid investments and cash and cash equivalents for larger organisations; at the ready for a ‘rainy day’ or as aforementioned, the next Black Swan, whenever and however this may take effect. 14.01.2022 The current social restrictions can be especially hard to deal with, especially for those living in Victoria. If you need mental health support, you can call a free and confidential service such as Lifeline. Their phone number is 13 11 14. You can also speak with your GP about accessing mental health support services which are paid for by Medicare, under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. This may include 10 or 20 FREE consultations with a psychologist, psychiatrist, GP or ...other eligible allied health worker. For those who are already on this plan and if you have been affected by tighter living restrictions, you may be eligible for an additional 10 consultations (20 total) commencing from 7 August 2020 until 31 March 2020, as announced by the Federal Government. Above all, speak up to a family member, friend or one of the FREE services mentioned above if you are struggling. 08.01.2022 2020 Final Lessons Learned // Black Swans are still alive and well Despite the world being more advanced than ever, with infinite levels of technology, intellectual capital and completed research; this year taught us that we are no more prepared than in past decades to deal with so called ‘Black Swan’ events. Research teams, policy makers nor the likes of Artificial Intelligence, no matter how smart, had the foresight to predict that something as innocuous as a food market w...ould place the world in a state of chaos. Investment markets, the real economy and our social lives as we knew it, were turned upside down in dramatic speed and with devastating effect. From last year and to our first lesson, we should move into 2021 with a much deeper expectation of the unexpected. Read on at: http://bit.ly/2020finallessons

03.01.2022 The Dow Jones stock index has just reached 30,000 points for the first time ever, on the back of further confidence in a COVID-19 vaccine and with less political uncertainty in the US. The Dow Jones index represents the largest 30 companies listed on US equity exchanges and interestingly is not based on market capitalisation. Financial market historians will also be aware that the Index was named after Charles Dow and Edwards Jones, past editor of the WSJ and a statistician respectively.

02.01.2022 Starting a new business? Once you have some of the cosmetics out of the way (business name, domain name etc), it’s time to start considering some of the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the internal operations. This starts with identifying your preferred or recommended accounting system. ... Popular choices include Xero, QuickBooks and MYOB. These are different in terms of functionality, third-party integration and cost. There are also many others, including a number of free solutions for those starting out with very limited investment capital (money). Your accountant or bookkeeper will be able to advise which accounting software is the most suitable for your needs.
