17.01.2022 I've got something really special for you today. One of our partners at the Lap of Tasmania is Osborne Heli Tours, and on the weekend my wife and I decided to make our way out to Port Arthur and experience their 15-min "Sea Cliffs and Convicts" tour. WOW...what an absolute blast!! Seeing this beautiful part of Tasmania is so different from a birds-eye perspective. Looking down on the lush forest and crashing waves, seeing the ridiculously high cliffs and convict-built peniten...tiary and realising just how privileged we are to have this right on our doorstep... I don't have the words... Our pilot was amazing as well. Really friendly and full of fantastic info about the geography and history of the region. We both felt very comfortable - especially my wife who had never been in a helicopter before - and I would recommend this to everyone for an experience of a lifetime!! They have two different tours on offer at the moment - the one we did and also a 30-minute version that also takes you out to the very impressive Cape Pillar and Tasman Island. Both tours can be booked online (link in the comments). Use our LAPOFTAS code for 10% OFF Have a look at all the photos I took on the day - SO MUCH FUN!!!!! ----------------- Osborne Heli Tours | Discover the Tasman Peninsula | Discover Tasmania | Port Arthur Historic Site, Tasmania

10.01.2022 This is spring in Tassie's gorgeous Midlands. So much green!
08.01.2022 Last weekend we had a wonderful time down at Southport, exploring Tasmania's Far South. Here's a little 'walkthrough' of our morning at Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, from picking up our tickets at the visitor centre, to walking through the rainforest, into the caves for 45 minutes, and then back out again Due to covid bookings are essential at least one day prior to arrival. The good thing though is that tours are limited to only 8 people, meaning you get a far more... personalised tour than usual (when there can be 30+ in a group)! It's a bit cool inside the caves, and there are a few flights of stairs, so don't forget to bring sturdy shoes, a warm jumper, and of course your sense of adventure --------------- Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service | Southern Trove Tasmania | Far South Tasmania
07.01.2022 Cape Deslacs | South Arm Peninsula South Arm Peninsula doesn't get a lot of attention in the travel guides, but I think it is absolutely stunning, and a great place to spend a few days. The countryside is beautiful, and yet you are less than an hour from Hobart (South Arm RSL is your best camping option). Last weekend my wife and I decided to go and explore Clifton Beach and Cape Deslacs. As you can see the surf was absolutely pumping!... Surf Lifesavers maintain a summer presence at this beach, making it a good option for boogie boarders, surfers and swimmers with a reasonable level of ability. If the conditions were calm I'd say younger children would enjoy it as well, so long as mum/dad were keeping an eye on things (I've also taken some brilliant aurora photos from this beach at night!) Further up the beach at the eastern end there is a trail that takes you up to the lookout on top of Cape Deslacs, with great views across the beach. The trail winds its way across the headland, weaving between the muttonbird burrows before reaching the eastern escarpment. You could stop and return, or follow the trail along the escarpment a short way before looping back to the road through the scrub. Unfortunately you can't go too far along the cliffs as it hits private property. The views are still great though, as you can see all the way across to Roaring Beach and Nubeena on the Tasman Peninula! There are a few ways of doing this walk, from super easy to easy: (Longest) - Park at Clifton Beach before walking the length of the beach and up to the headland, before returning the same way (2 hours total). (Medium) - Take Bicheno St. and then Cape Deslacs Track by car before turning right into the mid-beach car park. Then follow the trail through the dunes to the beach and head towards the cape (1 hour total). (Short) - As for (2) but instead of turning right you follow Cape Deslacs Track all the way to the end and park your car. From there it is a very short walk to the lookout (15-20 minutes total) or you could do the loop around the headland which would add another 15 minutes. Are you thinking about a visit to South Arm? ------------------------ Hello Hobart | Hobart & Beyond | Clarence City Council | Discover Tasmania
05.01.2022 Our long weekend has gotten off to a great start! First of all a HUGE thank you to Anna from our Overdrive Car Hire. We recently started working together to provide a luxury/sports option for road trippers, and she very kindly offered the use of their awesome BMW for the weekend so that I could put myself in the shoes of a visitor to Tasmania. Well tell you more after we get home, but so far it has been an absolute blast!!!... We picked up the car from Hobart Airport before driving through town picking up some supplies for our dinner in Southport. Next up was lunch at Osteria at PettySessions in the lovely little town of Franklin. Such a delicious meal of authentic Italian recipes combined with Tassie’s best produce From that point on it was ‘top down’ cruising all the way to Southport via the coastal hideaways of Surveyors Bay and Dover! Our accommodation here is so special (check out the pics!!). When I was researching all the best options for our Southport Road Trip Guide I fell in love with an Airbnb called ‘Sirens @ Southport’. Afterwards, the owner Paul loved our guide so much that he generously offered for us to stay there next time we were in the area. How could we say no to this stunner?! We’ve lived in a lot of Airbnb’s over the last few years while travelling and working overseas, and Sirens is easily up there with the very best. Spacious, comfortable, and supplied with everything we could possibly need to self-cater. At this rate we may never leave More adventures and pics to come tomorrow! 02.01.2022 It's funny how some walking trails fly under the radar. My wife and I lived down by the water at Rose Bay soon after arriving in Tasmania, and yet we never knew this fantastic walk along the Derwent River was only minutes from our doorstep. The Clarence Foreshore Trail is very long (14 km!!), stretching from Geilston Bay all the way to Howrah. But the really good thing about the trail is that you can break it up into shorter sections, spending as little or as long as you lik...e exploring the banks of the Derwent and soaking up the fantastic views of Hobart and Mt Wellington. We had a few hours available, so we decided to explore the section at the start, between Geilston Bay and Lindisfarne. The first 10-15 minutes is beautiful, taking you along the water's edge from the Geilston Bay Boat Club to Limekiln Point. As you can see from the photos the flowers were in full bloom! From there it became a little bit more open, and the views of the Tasman Bridge started to take over. I can just imagine how nice it would be to grab a spot by the water at sunset Towards the end you cut through the back streets of Lindisfarne, which is interesting in itself as many of the homes have been there a long time and look amazing. Anzac Park is a great place for a BBQ (heaps of facilities) before completing the last few hundred metres to Simmons Park. Another handy thing is that nearly the entire walk is easily doable with a pram or bike, as it is flat and really well made (only the first section is a bit narrow and you may need to divert through the streets - but it is well sign posted). I can definitely see us trying the next section between Lindisfarne and Montagu Bay... and perhaps even further! What do you think? Does it look like a good day out? -------------------- - Geilston Bay is just a 5-min drive from central Hobart - Map -> https://www.greaterhobarttrails.com.au//clarence-foreshor/ - There is a great car park near the Geilston Bay Boat Club - 3.5 km (one-way) - Allow 1-1.5hrs (one-way) - Easy difficulty - Dogs are permitted on lead - Bikes are permitted --------------------- Clarence City Council | Geilston Bay Boat Club | Hobart & Beyond
02.01.2022 Port Arthur Lavender would have to be the perfect detour on your way to Port Arthur Historic Site. Delicious meals, stunning insta-friendly gardens, gorgeous lavender products for sale (great for a Tassie souvenir), and plenty of parking for vans and cars. Have you got Port Arthur Lavender on your road trip itinerary?... -------------------------- Discover the Tasman Peninsula | Discover Tasmania
02.01.2022 The Tamar Valley is one of Tasmania's biggest surprise packets. The vineyards are pretty as a picture year round - but that's not all you'll find when you include Launceston and the Tamar in your Tassie road trip itinerary. Dapper bushrangers, an inland 'beach', and even meet-and-greets with sea horses and platypuses. Keep reading to find out more! https://lapoftasmania.com.au//launceston-tamar-valley-road... ___________________ @northerntasmania | @TamarValleyTasmania | : Andrew Wilson See more
01.01.2022 Tarn Shelf is probably one of my favourite walks in all of Tasmania. Not only are the views amazing throughout, but as you can see from the photos you also get to experience some of Australia's most unique trees, lakes, geology and flowers. At times it almost feels like you are back with the dinosaurs! Tarn Shelf is a plateau at around 1,200m in the top end of Mt Field National Park, and along this shelf are more than half a dozen alpine lakes, strung like a necklace of shim...mering blue jewels. It's easy to get a little bit confused about this walk, because it is actually four walks connected together: - Pandani Grove Nature Walk (a stunning short walk in itself!) - Urquhart Track - Snowgum Track (beautiful as well) - Tarn Shelf The walk starts from Lake Dobson (about a 30min drive from the Mt Field Visitor Centre), and you are looking at about 1.5-2hrs walking to get to the start of Tarn Shelf. From there you can spend as long or little as you like walking along the shelf - you'll probably want to allow 1-2hrs. From there you can either follow the trail all the way down the hill and back around to Lake Dobson in a huge loop, or you can walk back the way you came. In total I recommend allowing at least 4-5hrs to experience Tarn Shelf, but if you want to see all the lakes and/or do the full loop then allow 5-6+ hours. Have a look and see what you think! ------------------ : Tarn Shelf is in Mt Field National Park. : Mt Field Visitor Centre is just over an hour from Hobart. Lake Dobson is then another 20-30min further on, along a gravel road. You will need a Parks Pass (available from the Visitor Centre). : This walk is MEDIUM difficulty with some steep sections and a bit of scrambling over rocks and around trees needed at times. : Allow 4hrs minimum (you won't get to see all the lakes), but I recommend 6hrs+ if possible. : This is alpine country and conditions can deteriorate very quickly. Always check the forecast and pack your day-bag for the conditions. In winter the road to Lake Dobson is often closed to 2WD vehicles due to snow. : https://parks.tas.gov.au//mount-field-national-/tarn-shelf --------------------- Waterfalls Cafe & Gallery, Mt Field National Park | Derwent Valley Tasmania
