25.01.2022 WHAT IS MENTORING? ‘Mentoring is sharing knowledge, skills and life experience to guide another towards reaching their full potential; it’s a journey of shared discovery.’ Mentoring is a positive, supportive relationship, encouraging young people to develop to their fullest potential.... Mentoring can make a profound difference to the lives of mentees and bring a richness to the lives of mentors. The consistent, enduring presence of a caring adult in a young person’s life can be the difference between staying in school or dropping out, making healthy decisions or engaging in risky behaviours. It can be so much more than this too. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the positive impact of mentoring and/ or feel this could be for you, please send me a message via messenger. We are always on the lookout for more mentors!

23.01.2022 The LARF mentoring programs story has appeared on the TSA nation wide social media. Here’s a link to the article they’ve published. It’s a hopeful story around how we have stayed connected with the young people in these challenging times. A huge thank you to our incredible volunteer mentors for responding to the challenges we were presented with and adjusting your role to provide these beautiful letters. Just remembering the times when you have felt safe and supported can be powerful.

17.01.2022 Find out what our LARF program are doing during Covid Lockdown.

16.01.2022 Welcome to our LARF community page! The LARF program is an award winning, unique and innovative program that meets weekly, engaging young people (aged between 9-16 years) who are facing economic and social disadvantage. Participants are matched with a trained young adult volunteer, to work alongside them on a range of social activities and provide them with encouragement, guidance and friendship. https://youtu.be/lEzUkMYbt9s

14.01.2022 https://digitaldoorknock.salvationarmy.org.au/larf Red Shield Appeal!! Hi to all our wonderful LARF community. As you are aware many things have changed in this age of COVID-19. This year we are unable to do our usual collection at the intersections for the Red Shield Appeal but we really need your help to do 'something'. The LARF program relies completely on the funds raised by the Red Shield Appeal to continue to provide support to vulnerable children and young people in o...ur community. This year we are launching a digital donation page. We are appealing to you our mentors and your wider networks of friends and family who know better than anyone how important LARF is and the difference it makes in a child's life, to please share this link to our donation page - to beg people to donate if you have to! You can even start your own page as we find that people are more inclined to donate to someone they know. Just link it to the Greater Ballarat team so it is recorded locally. However you do this, please share, share and re-share with all of your family, friends and professional networks!

12.01.2022 It’s National Volunteers week and I believe it’s more important than ever to acknowledge you, our incredible, compassionate and generous mentors! It’s been a real challenge in these uncertain times to find ways to stay connected to our communities and the vulnerable children we work with. But we will continue to find creative and meaningful ways to help you do this work that clearly means a great deal to you. This work that challenges, grows and changes us for the better. ...Thank you to every one of you for all that you do, giving your most precious commodity- your time and energy to create real change in our very own community. Below is a message from the TSA we would love you to watch when you can. We can’t wait to see you all back at LARF in the future, enjoying the children and young people once again and all the fun activities we do! Thank you!!!

11.01.2022 Here's a taste of some beautiful photos taken during a LARF session by one of our talented young people. Thanks to Louisa West photography for her encouragement and belief in our young people.

11.01.2022 Our vision- with thanks to Jasmine for finding the right words. To foster a positive and empowering community connection for young people who are experiencing extreme social isolation. These young people are supported by a trained mentor who provides consistent guidance and friendship to help them find their voice.

09.01.2022 ‘Safety is associated with powerful memories of home, of important people of experiences that are full of warmth and nurture’ .... Hi everyone! I hope you’re travelling somewhat better this week as we begin to adjust to the current situation The following article popped up today on my email and it was such a perfect description of how the LARF program creates and continues to offer safety now through our volunteers wonderful letter writing:... Safety is a basic human right. It creates the conditions in which the experience of being human is given the time and potency to flourish. Safety is associated with powerful memories of home, of important people, of experiences that are full of warmth, love, and nurture. It weaves interconnection. In its absence, danger lurks. Threat is perceived and felt. Fear overwhelms the senses and cripples the capacity for protection. It unleashes hurt, trauma and loss. After such disruption, states of safety are pursued in an inherent drive to re-capture what was lost. Safety searches for familiarity. It ritualises care and empathy. Safety restores life

08.01.2022 Next weekend at this time of year myself and a small band of diehard mentors would usually be collecting for the Red Shield Appeal on the intersection of Sturt and Gillies Street. It was always a fascinating social experiment, the incredible generosity from the most unexpected places contrasted with ‘I will stare straight ahead and pretend I can’t see the shivering person dressed in a fluorescent vest’. I can certainly understand all the stereotypical situations as I well rec...all the scramble for coins when no one uses cash these days and then coming up empty handed - which leads to the awkward mouthing of ‘sorry’! Or the annoyance when you have to drive through this very intersection ten times on that day! Oh I could tell you some stories... haha Anyway.... this year is very different and likewise will be just as interesting a social experiment but the reason we collect remains the same. Every dollar we raise stays in our community in order to ensure that programs such as LARF can continue to offer support to our vulnerable children and young people. Hopefully the digital way will make it easier for most, and even a dollar or two will make a huge difference! Please share our Donation page below with all of your friends and networks! Many many thanks to all that have liked our page!
