21.01.2022 Rotary History Bite #22/100: Sixty Years of Youth Today, most people have heard of the Rotary Youth Exchange, the world's biggest and best-known student cultura...l exchange program. But not everyone would know that it came about thanks to Australian Rotarians. Since it was conceived, Rotary Youth Exchange, or as it was once known, Rotary Student Exchange has become one of Rotary’s most respected and valuable programs. Today, Australian students can go on a 1 year exchange program to countries all around the world while many Aussie Rotarians gladly play host to international students visiting our shores. In 1927 the Rotary Clubs in Copenhagen, Denmark arranged exchanges. These were for a period of about two weeks and occurred during school holidays. Then in 1929 the Rotary Club of Nice, France, arranged similar exchanges. These were the forerunner of the different types of short-term exchanges for young people that now run successfully between many countries. There are camps with different themes, bike tours, home stays and the more recent New Generations Exchange. The current Rotary Student Exchange program had its genesis in an exchange between Australian Rotary Clubs and Clubs in Nebraska, USA back in 1959, the program's ongoing success over the following years leading to its official adoption worldwide in 1972. It started at an international assembly of Rotary Governors, held at Lake Placid in the USA in 1958. Harley Shaver, a past Governor from Nebraska asked many of those present to go home and consider a new idea of student exchange. This proposed exchange would enable students to spend a year in a different country, in a different culture whilst going to school. Joe Bradbury, an incoming Governor from District 280, Australia, accepted the challenge of an exchange between his district and the district in Nebraska, currently District 5450. At that time, District 280 was one of only 9 Australian districts. These districts had a total of only 326 clubs. That was the beginning. That was the easy part. He asked two enthusiastic Rotarians, Peter Barnett, of the Rotary Club of Myrtleford, and Clive Schliebs, of the Rotary Club of Wangaratta to both develop the program’s rules and promote participation. The very first exchange was eventually held between District 280 and the District in Nebraska, which included clubs in Colorado. In January 1959, John Rogers, a 15 year old student from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, USA, arrived in Myrtleford. At the same time two Australian students, Nick Rutherford and Norm Jordon left District 280 for Scottsbluff and Grand Lake, Colorado. It was those first three Rotary youth exchange students who started what has now become an opportunity of a lifetime for so many others. Today there are between 8,000 and 9,000 exchanges arranged each year, both the traditional long term and different types of a short-term duration. These exchanges allow students from roundabout 80 countries of the Rotary world the opportunity of a lifetime. These are an opportunity to develop international friendships, learn about different cultures and the need for a tolerance of each other’s cultural differences.

20.01.2022 This afternoon was a very proud moment for our club when long standing member David Jones was inducted as the inaugural District Governor of the new Rotary Dist...rict 9510 and will be supported by wife Lyn. Other special Mitcham guests were President Barry Hurst and wife Julie and the long term member who introduced him to Rotary Jim Horwood and wife Elaine. The smaller than usual in person gathering due to the problem of pre planning around Covid-19 restrictions, was able to be shared by a larger online gathering via Zoom. There were reports from the outgoing District Governors. First Jane Owens of District 9500 highlighted their programs including RYLA and the Science and Engineering Challenge which was held this year in her home city of Whyalla. Having had to cancel their District Conference they held a Virtual Conference. She was also proud of all Rotary Foundation District Grant projects being completed and thanked her husband David for his support. Tim Klar of District 9520 thanked his leadership team as well as the Steering Committee headed by Darcy Walsh for their work on bringing the two Districts together. He highlighted the support during the year of Shelter Box, which included wife Bronwyn making it her partner project and saw her receive a Shelter Box Volunteer Impact award and the sincere thanks of her husband. A special moment was a fundraiser High Tea organised by Dianne Maas wife of his District Secretary Peter. He also thanked his Conference Committee headed by Penni Taylor for their huge effort only to see the conference cancelled a week out due to the emerging pandemic. Our club received mention as one of 4 (along with Burnside, St Peters and Unley) who this year donated an average of at least $200 per member to the Rotary Foundation through personal member and club donations. David’s induction was preceded by the Changeover of the District Rotaract Representative from Liz Gardner of Salisbury Rotaract Club to Gregory White of the Adelaide City Rotaract Club. Liz (also a member of Rotary Club of Campbelltown) highlighted some of the wonderful work done by the Rotaract Clubs which included events for suicide prevention, Cultural Night and Virtual Movie Nights. Gregory looks forward to growing the spread of Rotaract clubs. Both Jane and Tim inducted David, who was first exposed to Rotary as a Rotaractor in 1977. He also gave thanks to the steering committee and then presented PDG pins to Jane and Tim and His DGE pin to Jeff Neale of Rotary Club of Campbelltown who then presented his DGN pin to Paul Thomas of Rotary Club of Northern Yorke Peninsula before presenting the rest of his leadership team. David also received a grafted fruit tree representing the merged Districts from new Membership Chair Fiona Biedermann and the keys to the brand new District Governor’s vehicle generously donated by Paradise Motors Mazda who also opened their showroom this afternoon to host the event. Thank you to Jeff and Jenny Neale of Paradise Motors and congratulations to David and Lyn Jones as you embark on your busy year with our best wishes. Thank you to my photographers Julie and Barb.
20.01.2022 Blankets and Food Appeal Although Government support via JobKeeper and JobSeeker are helping during this COVID-19 crisis, there are still many families and indi...viduals who are ineligible and struggling to make ends meet. As a result, charities large and small are under enormous pressure to provide essential aid not only to their traditional clients, such as those experiencing homelessness and those escaping domestic violence, but also migrants, international students refugees. A recent press report suggested something in the vicinity of a 750% increase nationally in people turning to charities for help this winter. While our Central Market food collections for the homeless are currently on hold, we are still keen to lend a hand to those in need. Blankets If you are able to donate any blankets in clean and good condition before August 27th, they'll be greatly received. Food & Household Items The second photo is a guide to the types of non-perishable foods and groceries charities love to receive. Any form of general household product you'd use on a daily basis would be great: from paper towel to toiletries, canned food, pasta, cooking oil, spices, sauces, laundry and cleaning products. Our Club welcomes public support of this appeal. Contact us via messenger if you’d like to contribute.

15.01.2022 What have we been up to? Megan, our Director recently spoke at a dinner for the Rotary Club of Prospect, SA. President Julie Johnson kindly made a donation to o...ur charity and in keeping with helping out our mates, Megan and Julie discussed a possible project where the money could be directed. Julie used her connections and found a gentleman on dialysis in Murray Bridge would greatly benefit from a wheelchair to assist with his mobility. That’s where Errol from Largs Bay Rotary came in, they have been repairing wheelchairs for many years and were only too happy to assist. The chair was great in that it folds down so it’s much easier to transport in a vehicle. The gentleman is extremely grateful for his chair but wishes to remain anonymous and we respect his wishes. Pictured below are Rotarian volunteers Patsy (Gawler Rotary), Errol and Marie (Largs Bay Rotary) and Mike (Gawler Rotary). Maureen accepting the handover of the chair from Mike and lastly Errol and Julie Johnson (Prospect Rotary). Thank you to Prospect, Largs Bay and Gawler Rotary for combining your resources and making this gift happen The Herd of Hope wish the gentleman all the best for the future and hope this wheelchair makes life just a little easier for you.

01.01.2022 DROUGHT COMMUNITIES OUTREACH PROGRAM RAWCS signed a partnership agreement with the Commonwealth Government on 12 June 2020 to assist in delivery of the Droug...ht Communities Outreach Program [DCOP], an initiative of National Drought and Northern Queensland Flood Response and Recovery Agency. DCOP will be holding 70+ information events in selected towns throughout the drought declared areas for farming families directly impacted by the drought. The aim is to increase coordination of drought support and enhance community awareness of the Australian Government’s drought assistance measures. Rotary’s role is to *Assist with community outreach delivery of these information events through wellbeing activities and BBQ catering. *Distribute $500 debit cards at these events as direct support to eligible farming households that are experiencing financial hardship due to drought, and improve levels of economic activity in regions by eligible recipients spending these cards in local communities and businesses. On 25 June 2020, RAWCS has received a grant of $5 million to fund its role. DCOP events will run from late July 2020 through to December 2020 and be held in all mainland states. The DCOP is currently finalising the list of towns where events will be held. Once received, RAWCS will complete the significant logistics required for our successful involvement. RAWCS DCOP project manager is RAWCS National Treasurer, Mike Whitehouse, and deputy project manager is RAWCS Deputy Chair, Dave Pearson. The DCOP have appointed four Department Prime Minister & Cabinet staff members with whom we will work closely to conduct the program. RAWCS is currently assessing drought impacted areas that will not have information events, with a view to distributing debit cards direct to eligible farming households within these areas during the program. The rollout of the DCOP program will be staged, with each stage being agreed between the partners. RAWCS will be communicating well in advance with District Governors regarding DCOP events that will be occurring in their Districts. This will include dates and locations of events and District Rotary Clubs which could be involved in the provision of BBQ’s and wellbeing activities. If Clubs choose to participate, they will be thoroughly briefed on their role at these information events. DCOP will fund a BBQ’s costs and provide a financial incentive to a club for participation.
01.01.2022 Please be aware the Giant Garage Sale that was to be held to day is cancelled, because it was difficult to comply with COVID-19 rules. The Facebook event has been cancelled but the it may still appear on some pages that have shared the event.
