22.01.2022 Easter should not only be fun for us but for our beloved pets too. Here are a few pet dangers to brush up on over the Easter holiday. Chocolate and sweet treats containing Xylitol and/or Theobromine are toxic.... Hot cross buns contain sultanas and raisins and even if they are super delicious can cause kidney damage. Easter lillies look absolutely beautiful but all parts of the plant including pollen, flower, leaves and vase water are poisonous even in small amounts. Dinner leftovers quite often have garlic, onion, chives and leeks in them and are poisonous to dogs and cats if too much is eaten. Easter grass and toys can cause choking and blockages in your pets stomach if chewed on or swallowed. If you want to include your furry friends in your traditions then whilst you are making Easter baskets for your children, surprise your dog or cat with one, too. Skip the Easter grass, so there are no intestinal complications, but include healthy treats and a new toy. Even if you only suspect that your pet has swallowed or touched something poisonous please contact us immediately on 9524 3838.

16.01.2022 Now that the warmer weather is approaching, grass seeds will start to grow and they are a very common problem especially for our fluffy friends who love to run through fields or in the bush. What is a grass seed you ask? So part of the grass seed that is the problem is the Awn It is a hard case that surrounds the seed, They have a sharp spikey head and an arrow shape with bristles that point backwards. The shape helps the grass self-propagate. The sharp point enables it... to bury into soil whilst the arrow head bristles prevents it from coming out again. Grass seeds commonly bury themselves into your pets fur and make their way into their skin which can turn into an abscess (as the grass seed is a foreign body in the skin) they bury in between their paws, into their ear canal and their eye lid, and even up their nose Signs your pet may have a grass seed constantly shaking or pawing their ears licking or chewing on paws red and inflamed ears red and inflamed paws abscess on paw, or anywhere on the body reverse sneezing/ throat gagging If you think your dog may have any of these signs, or you have recently been to an area with lots of grass seeds, please see your vet for a check over. This is a photo of a grass seed we pulled out of an ear from a little Kelpie named Narla this morning

16.01.2022 Friday Fun Day !! How well do you know the Larkhill Small Animal Team ??? Who can name the staff members that own each of these pets Post your answers below in the comments section and we will post the answers later. Happy Guessing !

15.01.2022 Cute, fuzzy, fluffy and hopping mad, who doesn’t love these adorable creatures, also known as bunnies? Check out these ten rabbit facts! 1) A baby rabbit is called a kit, a female is called a doe and a male is called a buck. 2) Rabbits are very social creatures that live in groups. They live in warrens, which are a series of tunnels and rooms that they dig underground.... 3) A rabbit’s teeth never stop growing! Instead, they’re gradually worn down as the rabbit chews on grasses, wildflowers and vegetables meaning they never get too long. 4) Rabbits perform an athletic leap, known as a ‘binky‘, when they’re happy performing twists and kicks in mid air! 5) Rabbits’ eyes are on the sides of their head, meaning they can see almost all the way around them. This helps them to keep a close watch for predators while they’re going about their business! 6) Like cats, happy rabbits purr when they’re content and relaxed. 7) Rabbits are amazing athletes they can jump as high as 90 centimetres in one leap! 8) A rabbit’s best feature? Their long ears! Growing up to 10 centimetres in length, rabbits can turn their ears by 180 degrees, keeping a careful listen out for predators. 9) One of the world’s best-known rabbits is the Warner Bros cartoon character, Bugs Bunny who’s often seen munching on a carrot! In fact, carrots aren’t a natural part of a rabbit’s diet and can give bunnies an upset stomach if they eat too many. 10) Rabbits are very effective baby-makers! Mother rabbits are pregnant for between 28-31 days, giving birth to up to 14 baby rabbits called kittens in a single litter.

The disease is called Ehrlichia (er-lick-ee-a), and it is an infection with a bacteria called Ehrlichia canis. It is related to diseases like tick typhus, Q fever, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. 14.01.2022 Addison Disease Eclipse, the wonderful Alaskan Malamute X, came in recently after his owners noticed he wasn’t himself and seemed more lethargic than normal. Our veterinarians ran some screening bloods and discovered he has some abnormalities in his electrolytes indicating that he had a condition known as hypoadrenocorticism AKA Addison disease. This disease occurs when there is insufficient production of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid hormones produced by the adre...nal glands. This disease generally is seen in middle aged to older dogs and is more commonly seen in Standard Poodles and Bearded Collies but can present in any breed. Diagnosis of this condition is often difficult as it can present with a wide variety of clinical signs so a combination of blood tests, thorough physical exam and in depth history taking is needed for a accurate and prompt diagnosis. More common clinical signs include vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy. Unfortunately this disease does require life long medication but once patients are stabilised on medications they can live a normal life. Luckily for Eclipse his owners brought him in as soon as they noticed he wasn’t quite right. We were able to start prompt treatment and after a day of hospitalisation, starting medications and lots of cuddles he was feeling much better. We can also say that Eclipse gives the best cuddles and he is such a handsome sweet boy We wish Eclipse a speedy recovery.

12.01.2022 Now that summer has come and gone, we prepare ourselves for stormy nights with thunder and lightning by rugging up by the fire with a toasty cup of hot chocolate Unfortunately for our furry friends , it might not be that simple. Storm phobia is an extreme or irrational fear of storms ie; thunder noises, flashes of lightning, strong winds, hail or even heavy rain that some of our furry friends can suffer from. Some animals can even sense a storm before it even arrives,... turning your animal from calm and comfortable to very agitated, timid and stressed within seconds. Some animals get so frightened and stressed that they even run away in an attempt to get away from the storm, injuring themselves in the process. We have some tips you can follow to ensure that they will be okay and stress free through the stormy nights. Creating a safe and secure space that your animal can hide away from the storm, ideally somewhere dark and quiet as dogs can be quite destructive during the stressful weather. Crate training can help. Keeping our cats indoors during the days and nights of the worse weather Feliway for cats and Adaptil for dogs to keep them calm Not encouraging fretting behaviour by petting/cuddling/saying its okay because it would encourage the behaviour Medical intervention might be warranted in more severe cases Another very important thing to do during the stormy weather is making sure that your pets microchip information is up to date. In the event that they do run away, we will be able to contact you if your pet is brought down to us. Signs to know your animal is becoming distressed due to a storm Panting Pacing around or wanting to hide Excessive drooling Howling or whimpering excessively or barking Destructive behaviour in an attempt to run/hide - digging, chewing, breaking things Reluctant to listen to commands Remember, all these signs can be present in our animals even before a storm arrives. If you would like more information before the nasty weather hits, please contact us on 9524 3838 or to book in a consult with one of our Vets, or email us at [email protected]

10.01.2022 With the weather warming, our snake friends are waking up! Snakes are an essential part of our natural ecosystem. Snakes tend to prefer to avoid confrontation, however, when scared due to being attacked, bitten, chased or disturbed areas by an inquisitive dog or cat, they can inflict a lethal bite. This is a reminder for all pet owners to take precautions and hopefully avoid an emergency vet visit.... What can you do to prevent attracting snakes on your property? Keep your property free from rubbish piles. Pick up dog/cat food bowls from outside. Keep your grass/paddock cut short. Keep your dogs on lead around bushland/swamp areas. If you live in an area where snake bites are a potential risk then consider snake aversion training for your dog. Keeping your cat indoors can also prevent snake bites. A dog's/cat's reaction, signs or symptons from being bitten by a snake can vary. Signs can be subtle at first and progress to a life threatening situation extremely fast. It's important that you act on any suspicions. If your dog/cat has been in contact with a snake please do not hesitate and bring them to the Vet immediately. Please always call your Vet when you are on your way so the team can be prepared for your arrival. EVERY SECOND COUNTS!! Signs of Snake Bite: Dilated pupils. Lethargy Complete paralysis. Irregular bleeding from the nose, bite site, mouth. Discoloured, dark, bloody urine. Sudden loss of bladder and bowels. Sudden collapse followed by apparent recovery. What can you do? Safely bring animal to the Vet immediately. Do not attempt to catch or kill snake, they are a protected specie by law and it is safest to leave them alone. Do not attempt to wash wound or bandage wound (time is of the essence). Call your Vet whilst you are on your way. Two primary species of Snakes encountered in the Perth metro area are Dugites and Tiger Snakes and they are dangerously venomous. Please see image below.

Ferret anaesthetics are similar to cat anaesthetics, they have a fast metabolism, but a short fasting period is still needed. ... Ferrets will get plaque build up on their teeth because of their diet just like our other animals Ferrets are carnivores they only eat a meat diet they don’t eat biscuits, so overtime the texture of the food they eat will cause their plaque build up How can we reduce build up? 02.01.2022 LarkHill Sauasge Sizzle on Saturday the 12/12 was a very pleasant albeit humid day but nice to see so many Greys about the place and a few faces we haven't see...n for awhile. The Larkhill staff were very accommodating again as usual and a big thank you goes out to them on behalf of GAWA. Mr and Mrs Clause were a great success and took many photos with dogs of all shapes and sizes. Santa did his best to drum up extra revenue by standing out the front on the main busy road with our SS sign and ringing his bell but alas to no avail. A big thanks to all who came along with their hounds, and those that came to help out with other aspects of the event. It is always such a pleasure to see a large group of Greyhounds together and all behaving so well and enjoying the fun day.
