18.01.2022 COURAGEOUS WILLIAMS A TOP 25 AFLW PROSPECT: I cannot even fathom the level of strength and resilience shown by Darwin Buffettes player Stephanie Williams on NTF...L Grand Final Day of the 2018/19 season. Williams was named best-on-ground in an U18s Girls premiership, less than 24 hours after finding out her sister Karina had tragically taken her own life. Stephanie courageously spoke about the tragedy and her approach to football in a great article on the Women’s AFL website. Williams made a vow to keep on trying for her sister and was recently named among the Top 25 AFLW Draft Prospects. A dangerous lead up forward blessed with speed and agility, she was invited to attend the Victorian AFLW State Combine. Williams has spent her schooling years boarding in Victoria. 15.01.2022 Thanks to Google for posting this slash pic reminding us all that today would have been this great man's birthday - he would have been 64 years old - before he ...was taken from us too soon. The following is from the National Portrait Gallery entry (https://www.portrait.gov.au/people/mandawuy-yunupingu-1956) MANDAWUY YUNUPINGU AC 1956 2013 Dr Mandawuy Yunupingu (19562013), singer songwriter, was the lead singer of Australia's pre-eminent Aboriginal band, Yothu Yindi. Born in Arnhem Land, Yunupingu trained as a teacher, completing his degree in 1987 and later becoming the first Indigenous Australian to be appointed a school principal. He formed Yothu Yindi in 1986. Combining traditional instruments, songs and sounds with western rock and pop, the band achieved international recognition with their second album Tribal Voice (1991) and specifically with the hit single 'Treaty'. Co-written with Paul Kelly, 'Treaty' was written as a protest and to raise awareness of the government’s failure to honour then Prime Minister Bob Hawke’s promise to Indigenous Australians, at the Barunga Festival in 1988, of a treaty. It was performed at the launch of the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Peoples; 'Treaty' reached No. 11 on the Australian charts and was voted Song of the Year by the Australian Performing Rights Association. Yunupingu retired from teaching in 1991 and toured with the band throughout the 1990s while continuing his work in supporting and promoting Aboriginal rights and culture. He was a member of the Yothu Yindi Foundation and the Reference Group Overseeing the National Review of Education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Named Australian of the Year in 1992, Yunupingu died of kidney disease in June 2013, six months after Yothu Yindi were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In 2014, he was posthumously awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for services to music, indigenous social justice, education and cross-cultural understanding. Updated 2018

13.01.2022 Did you know that since March 2019 the two peak organisations for Larrakia, Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation and Larrakia Development Corporation have maintained a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU recognises the visions, missions and strengths of the two organisation, a new spirit of mutual respect and the pursuit of self-determination for the benefit of ALL Larrakia people. Importantly, the MOU sets out matters of significant interest to Larrakia that the two... organisations will work together in pursuit of, namely: - Town camps and other land related matters...in the greater Darwin Region, - Place names, - Language and cultural initiatives, and, - Other issues pertinent to the advancement of Larrakia. Currently, the two organisations are in discussions with the Northern Territory Government in relation to Special Purpose Leases in the Greater Darwin Region and the former Stoke's Hill Naval Oil & Fuel Depot, which straddles a registered Larrakia Sacred Site. The MOU continues to work to ensure all government dealings with Larrakia are transparent and that accountability to Larrakia families is maintained at all times.

07.01.2022 The RSL on the esplanade won't be going ahead. Last night, Darwin council passed a vote to turn the car park, the proposed site for the new RSL clubhouse, into ...open 'green' space. Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis supported the motion, which he says gives certainty to the community that no development will happen on the site. Are you happy with the decision?
