25.01.2022 Stop the freakin press people!! Bit of news. I won’t say ‘I’m super excited’ because it’s my new vlog/blog pet hate but dammit, I’m pumped! I have been involved in a new project since about August last year with the aim of making solar power mobile and affordable. Since making Larry’s Lawns run solar, I have decided that ALL TRADIES should be solar powered, but no one should have to build it themselves like I did or pay through the eyeballs to make it happen. So, I joined up ...with BlueVolt and it’s all happening at a rate of knots! Anyway, Alex Honnold’s foundation (rock climbing demi-god) has chosen BlueVolt with a hand full of others from 700 applications to fund our first project on the island of Savo in the Solomon Islands. 20.01.2022 From the CEO of BLUEVOLT. With the pandemic and race riots, it's easy to miss the good news in the energy industry. A big milestone was reached in recent years when new solar plants became cheaper than new coal plants, but something even bigger is happening this year: new solar plants are about to become even cheaper than running an EXISTING coal plant. Covid-19 has accelerated coal's demise - demand for energy has dropped, and since coal is more expensive to run than just ab...out everything else, coal power has been ramped down first. Suddenly, globally, everyone is bailing coal investments and insurers will no longer insure it. Japan’s three largest institutional banks now exclude any financing of new coal-fired power. One, Mizuho, had been the world’s largest private financier of coal. Exit announcements have followed from four Japanese trading houses. Shell, Total and BP, the three big oil producers, have all pledged net zero emissions by 2050. Deka and Union Investment in Germany have excluded coal. Even in the US, global bank Citi said it would stop providing financial services to new thermal coal mines or expansion of existing ones and also with coal-fired power. Citi and Morgan Stanley both also ruled out Arctic drilling. Allianz, one of the world's biggest insurers, also announced it will not insure coal or invest in it. In April Austria eliminated coal from its grid when it closed its last coal-fired plant and Sweden closed its last coal-fired plant two years earlier than planned. The two countries join Belgium's coal free status; the UK has not used coal power for several months. The citizens of Netherlands successfully sued their government for not doing enough to protect the climate, they will now have to massively reduce coal output. In Australia, the smokestacks of the Hazlewood coal plant were reduced to dust. You'll notice there's now been a shift in language from coal to gas: now it's apparently gas that's critical for baseload power and enabling greater penetration of renewables. Don't be fooled- we are now at 20% renewables and can get to 50% pretty easily just with Snowy 2.0 and a couple of critical interconnectors between states and Tasmania to the mainland. 70% is possible with a modest amount of home batteries, electric cars with mobile batteries will allow higher penetration of renewables again. Even AEMO said that going to 70% renewables is mostly about adjusting rules and regulations. We are living in exciting times!
