17.01.2022 It has come to the attention of the team at Laserman that during the global COVID-19 pandemic, many people are panic buying Infrared (IR) Temperature Guns as a method to measure the human bodys temperature. The team at Laserman will tell you that this is the wrong solution for the problem. What a lot of people dont recognise is that brands of IR Guns are designed for MACHINES. The average industrial IR Gun has a tolerance or accuracy of plus or minus 2% of reading, or 2C... above or below the actual measurement (whichever is the greater). For a machine, a slight inaccuracy in a temperature reading is not a life or death situation. For a human, being even half a degree above or below the average core body temperature can be an alarm bell. It is paramount that if you choose to use an IR gun to take a humans temperature, you need an IR calibrator. Essentially, a calibrators job is to eliminate the uncertainty reading of the IR gun, so you are able to correctly calibrate and adjust your IR Gun to read accurate measurements. The use of a calibrator alongside your IR Gun is not a case of having to spend extra money. It is a case of peoples lives and potentially letting people infected with COVID-19 out into the public. Nevertheless, its not the end of the world! The Fluke 4180 Precision IR Calibrator is an excellent instrument to use alongside your IR Gun. Keep in mind however, not all IR Guns have an emissivity adjustment, so its incredibly important that you purchase an IR Gun that has this adjustment feature. Fluke also offer some excellent resources on understanding how to properly calibrate your IR gun and to determine a proper size for the thermal radiation source used for calibration. https://as.flukecal.com//steps-determine-if-size-your-sour https://au.flukecal.com//applicat/infrared-thermometer-cal The bottom line is, you should NOT be using an industrial IR Gun to take human temperature.
