17.01.2022 When to invest in a Sprinter - Digital Level The Leica Sprinter really saves builders and surveyors who take lots of measurements with a dumpy level. The Sprinter is really a glorified Dumpy Level that offers the user greater accuracy, is faster, easier to use and results can be downloaded. Dumpy levels are notorious for being out 10mm. This is because of misreading the E type staff but errors also occur with metric staffs. This is especially the case if you do not have ...20:20 vision and have to use glasses. The reason why the Sprinter reading is more accurate is due to the bar coded staff. Line up, press the button and hey presto! A digital reading to the nearest millimetre pops up on the screen. No peering through the telescope or adjusting the focus trying to make out the reading as with your old Dumpy. And the standard Model 50 gives distance to the nearest cm - no more wasting time trying to calculate distance from the stadia lines. Since the Sprinter gives electronic measurements, a Bluetooth connection with the more advanced models enables you to download the results via USB interface with an alpha numeric reference. The 150Model offers other applications such as Delta height and Tracking, while the 150M and 250M Models provide Line levelling, Cut & fill and Data storage, and have built-in memory for storing up to 1000 points. The 150M gives accuracy to 1.5mm while the 250M achieves 1mm, even 0.7mm with the Sprinter fibre glass barcode staff.

11.01.2022 Why Optical Squares are so useful Accurate setting out has always been of major concern to small builders who want a less expensive and easier to use alternative to a theodolite. Optical Square is the perfect answer. It consists of two prisms which reflect light a perfect 90 housed in a metal frame. It has a hook at the base so it can hang a plumb bob over a reference point when attached to a standard tripod. Having established the instrument over point A, you rotate it slo...wly in order to align it with a range pole held over point B. You then tell the range pole guy where exactly is at right angles to AB simply by looking through the prism to establish the new reference point. Since the unit has two prims, you can look to the left or right as required to get the desired perpendicular. Having no moving parts or batteries to worry about, the double Optical Square is quite sturdy and small. It is only 10 cm long, weighs 100 gram and slides into a strong leather pouch to fit onto your belt.

05.01.2022 Q. I use a tractor to level home pads and the occasional tennis court and sloped floor for farm sheds. I am currently using CST LD500 receivers on my machine for manual control but I am looking for an automatic system that will be simpler to operate and save on base material. What do you suggest? A. I assume you have already mounted a pole or length of pipe to your blade suitably cross braced. This can also be used with a 360 degree sensor which you will find a big improvemen...t as it will pick up the rotating laser beam in all situations except when shaded by the tractor. Since it is a 5 channel receiver, so you can see if a little bit high or a lot high which really helps with manual control but you will need a coiled power cable. Otherwise the next step is to invest in a control panel with three cables: one to go to the sensor (coiled), one to your 12v or 24v battery, and one to your HCV (Hydraulic Control Valve). When ordering, you will need to advise if it is On/Off or if proportional. To operate, start in manual mode and switch to Auto once you are grading smoothly if otherwise the machine goes up and down as it over-reacts to the signals. The only optional extra you need to consider is whether to pay the small extra cost of a joy stick so you can more quickly lift the blade if you hit a hard or high spot which starts to overload your machine. 03.01.2022 What can you do with a Theodolite? Theodolites accurately measure vertical and horizontal angles and are crucially essential throughout the building, mining and construction industries from preliminary survey to project completion. Digital Theodolites with rotating telescope provide precise, magnified, long distance images of survey targets. User-friendly interfaces suit professionals and amateurs alike. Electronic Digital Theodolites professionally survey land while automat...ed software eliminates errors. Additionally converts vertical angle measurements to percentages of grade. Gyrotheodolites establish the essential north-south reference bearing of the meridian in the absence of astronomical sightings. Primarily used in underground mining and tunnel construction
