It is great to see so many women putting themselves out there and recognising other women who inspire them. Weve been chatting about ways in which women can actively empower other women and came up with these five ideas.... Connect women with other women. Empower other women by introducing them to the people who can help them access the resources and knowledge they need to grow and improve. Validate other women's self-expression. Women's narratives are vastly underrepresented in the media and popular culture. So when you see a woman taking it upon herself to share her story and let herself be vulnerable, acknowledge that act of bravery. It could be a comment on an Instagram post or blog or a quick telephone call or SMS. Speak up about gender issues whenever possible. At one of my previous jobs, I noticed the lack of women in senior positions, so I advocated for a women-in-leadership group where women could be mentored and share their knowledge in a safe and confidential environment. We encouraged discussions on gender imbalance in the company and how we could change inequality. Invest in women-run businesses. Many female entrepreneurs lack adequate support in the form of funding or sweat equity. Invest your time and/or money in competent, capable women who are making an impact. Prioritise women of colour, trans women, disabled women, and all the most disenfranchised among us. It's essential for all womenjust like anyone elseto make sure they're continually stopping to examine their privilege. An empowering question to ask, particularly when we find ourselves or others feeling defensive in discussions regarding oppression, is: Whose comfort is most being prioritised right now? Make sure you are mentally and emotionally prepared to face any situation. This keeps the stress at bay, as well. * Look back. Recall a time when you were able to survive a difficult situation. Harness strength and confidence from that experience. * Exercise and eat healthy food. Not only do you need to be mentally and emotionally prepared, but you also have to be physically fit. Daily exercise will boost your immune system. By being active, youll be more prepared to face situations that require you to be resilient. * Ask for help when you need it. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it is rather a sign of courage.
