22.01.2022 So it's Christmas time... Here are some tips of things you can do to avoid a Financial Hangover heading into the New Year... 1. Have a pre-Christmas clean up -... sell things (online, garage sales etc) that you don't need to generate extra cash for Xmas. 2. Make a list and check it twice - Make a list of who you're buying for, what you want to get them, and how much money you're prepared to spend on each person. 3. Track your spending - There are a bunch of different apps available, and the MoneySmart one is FREE! 4. Be cluey about credit or 'Buy Now, Pay Later' promotions - If you're going to use credit, or sign up to a promotion, make sure you are able to keep up the payments and understand the terms and conditions. 5. Be a scrooge when shopping online - Check all your different options, search for promo codes and discount vouchers, and don't forget to include shipping costs when deciding on your purchase. 6. Get social with Christmas shopping - Keep an eye on your favourite product providers social pages for specials and discounts or flash sales. 7. Master the art of Christmas gift hacking - Agree on a spending limit, agree to kids only gifts (no adult gifts among family?), compare offers and let retailers know you can get it cheaper elsewhere, or shop second hand (gumtree, antique shops etc). 8. Lighten the load on Christmas day - share catering (have everyone bring something), use your loyalty credits (Flybuys etc), and don't overshop and end up wasting food - only buy what you need.
