18.01.2022 VALE SHEP On this day, 9th September 2015, Neil ‘Shep’ Sheppard passed away. During the few days I visited K.I. for his funeral, I remember Liz (his wife) thoughtfully suggesting that I take some alone time in his studio.... I remembered the first time I had met Neil, in his studio, some four years earlier. I reflected on being blessed to have had painting time with him, to share in the hospitality of Liz and Neil’s home and community, as well as being able to share in one of his painting workshops with my boys only a few months earlier. During that grieving and reflective time in his studio I remember seeing, for the first time, his painting The Rockpool at Stokes Bay Beach. I remember thinking to myself, ‘If we ever got that house at Stokes, this painting would be perfect.’ The house I was thinking of was @lathami.lodge @stokesbay and it was definitely not a possibility. It wasn’t for sale (we had asked when we had stayed there seven months earlier). Fast forward almost three years and through a set of serendipitous and unexplainable circumstances I found myself back at Shep’s Studio, this time with my family. We had just put an offer in for Lathami. When I saw Neil’s painting still hanging there I told @peter.k.ball what I had thought about the painting the one and only time I had seen it. He agreed that Neil’s painting and Lathami were meant to be together. And so, that’s what ended up happening. I remember asking Liz, shortly after, how it came to be that that painting was still available after all that time. She told me that it was really strange as that particular painting had had a number of very keen buyers, yet for one reason or another the sale had not gone through. And so the painting had remained in his studio. Until, I like to think, it found its way home. Things were quite dire in April with our dam barely a puddle and us having to get water trucked in for our tanks.... 03.01.2022 DOUBLE TAKE We already know how beautiful our local beach is at Stokes Bay. It never disappoints; whether it’s the glistening of the water, the usually deserted beach or the hues of a sunset.... This evening though it seems that the artist’s palette was thrown at it with just a twist of magic for good measure. To the North, a glorious sunset full of pinks and mauves; to the South, a shimmering rainbow. Artists and writers and poets can conjure adequate tributes of praise.
