25.01.2022 One of many surprises awaiting us in Guatemala was the fact that its soil hides one of the best jade in the world. Only here and in Myanmar (former Burma) jade is actually jadeite jade, the purest form of the rock. Jadeite is harder and denser, higher quality than well known Chinese Jade. It possesses richer and more brilliant colours which vary from green-white to black. Used in Maya funeral masks for centuries, most valuable jadeite jade purchased in Guatemala have been polished and carved with ancestral methods. Nothing can bring more vivid, happy memories than a special piece bought in an exotic destination. Our fully escorted group had the chance to explore jadeite jade from local markets to top jeweler shops. You too can explore this ancestral skill in our next fully escorted tour departing February 2021.

24.01.2022 Tomorrow will be a different Anzac Day. We are not going to be able to join others to pay tribute to those who fought to help Australia and the World what it is... today. But we still can do it from our driveways, balconies or front yards. In a difficult moment of our country and the World, fighting a different war with an invisible enemy, let the spirit of the Anzac unite us in the adversity and make possible a prompt finish of this situation. Mateship, courage and looking after your peers have never been more needed. Lest we forget See more

23.01.2022 HUIPIL is the traditional garment worn by women from Mexico and Central America. It is plainly two to three pieces of fabric saw together by cotton stitches, ribbon or soft leather. But the huipil is much more that a dress. It tells the story of the region that lady belongs to. It discloses her social and marital status, her ethnicity and community interests. The uniqueness of huipils is that they are hand embroidered with the most incredible minuscule details like butterflies eyes. Depending of the region, like in the State of Yucatan, they have hand made cotton lace forming intricate designs as well. Our last fully escorted group admired first hand these examples of local artistry and many of our passengers had the chance to buy some. So if you want to check our next fully escorted tour to Mexico, Guatemala and Cuba contact us.

21.01.2022 The best decision as tour operators is to find a way that our passengers can relate with the places we are visiting. Instead of flying through Guatemala we decided to literally cross the country in a private bus allowing our groups to indulge in beyond words scenery as well as village life style like this photos show. The simplicity of country life paired up with the gentle nature of Guatemalans made our passengers enjoy the true way of life in that parts of the world. Our fully escorted tour to Mexico & Guatemala will be repeated in February 2021.

21.01.2022 Have you ever thought how to make REAL Mexican tortillas? These gorgeous girls have the secret of perfect tortillas passed to them from ancestor’s centuries ago. Pure tender sweet corn grown in every backyard + water from the creek down there + lots of slapping. Hands can be of the fairest colour skin to dark chocolate one. Soft, young and tender or deformed by years of work. The tortilla making is a task for the very young and very old females in the household. Task that is performed with lots of AMOR. These girls were captured in our last fully escorted tour to Mexico & Guatemala last time. A real treat in cultural experiences and deep immersion in the true way of local living. Do you want to join us next February 2021? A free information session will be held Wednesday February 19. Contact us for more details

20.01.2022 The Papantla Flyers or Dance of the Flyers is an ancient ritual or ceremony performed mostly in what it is today Mexico and Guatemala. It is believed to be an offer to the gods to bring rain. The ritual consists of 5 young men climbing up a 30 meter pole. While one stays on top of the pole playing music, usually flute or drum, the other four launch themselves tied with ropes to the ground. This ceremony was named Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO and it is still performed in many pockets of Mexico. We will experience these young men’s skills live in a few days when we arrive at the Yucatan Peninsula with our fully escorted group.

18.01.2022 Music is the soul and heart of Cuba. Their people spend most of their free time buzzing with their instruments in small groups or big family gatherings. The hypnotizing rhythms of percussion from African heritage have blended beautifully with Spanish melodic tunes. Dancing is a vital part of the Islanders and there is a Casa de la Trova or dancing hall in every town where local bands play and locals of any age go for dancing. We are again in Cuba in our Northern Treasures tour in February 2021. Pleas contact us to express your interest and find out more.

18.01.2022 Our first point of call in Guatemala will be Antigua (Ancient or old in Spanish). Antigua the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala, was founded in 1524 as Santiago de Guatemala. It was built 1,530 m above sea level in an earthquake-prone region. Three earthquakes that buried the city, plus big fire damage caused by an uprising of the Indigenous population and an avalanche in 1541, made the authorities considering the relocation of the Guatemalan Capital. After the re...location, some residents stayed in the old city and this is the name it is referred until today. It was the centre of the cultural, economic, religious, political and educational for the entire region. Totally ignored by America visitors it has a big attraction to European tourists. One of their main income comes from Spanish teaching institutes and the proximity to textile regions. We will be there in March 2021 and you can join us. Please contact us or attend our presentation night on February 19. See more

15.01.2022 Muralism is a movement of big scale murals painted after the Mexican Revolution. Mexico was and has been for most of the twentieth century the maximum exponent of this phenomenon. One of the reasons is that the three grand artists of such movement were very politically involved and vocal about their ideas. Other is that the Education Minister of the 1930’s brilliantly suggested to these artists to recreate Mexico’s history through images as in those days majority of the population was illiterate. This is the reason why we start our very Mexico City walking tour at Government Palace to share with our fully escorted passengers the strokes of geniuses Diego Rivera (Frida Kahlo's husband), José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Something impossible to describe so, join us next February 2021 and see it yourself.

15.01.2022 CUBAN CIGAR is an inextricable part of Cuban culture and history. Even though the rest of the world evolved considerably in the last 500 years, most Cubans still firmly believe in the therapeutic values of tobacco. It seems that Columbus introduced tobacco plants into the island but the first local smokers were imprisoned as it was believed that cigar smoke would attract evil. The European market grew along the centuries, the handmade cigar making and production was passed across generations and became one of the main exports. Organically produced, there are many experts that would like to teach our fully escorted passengers in our next visit to Cuba in February 2021. Contact us for more details.

13.01.2022 The marimba, a musical instrument of percussion, was brought to Latin America by the African slaves. In essence is a giant xylophone and can be seen in many countries around Latin America, but for some particular reason it has remained as the typical music of Guatemala. Twice a day in the gardens of one of the Hotels in Antigua, one band performs the music of this instrument and in general our passengers end up dancing at their rhythms.Like the idea? Join us in our fully escorted tour in February/March 2021. Contact us or attend our information session. See details in our page.

10.01.2022 Lake Atitlán is a body of water in a massive volcanic crater in Guatemala’s southwestern highlands. Ringed by steep, verdant hills, it’s known for its Mayan villages and volcanoes with striking pointed cones. The busy town of Panajachel, where vendors sell traditional textiles, is a popular gateway to the lake. We will be based in Santa Catarina Palopo as our base in the area, that is located 10 minutes driving from Panajachel. From there weather permitting we will visit some of the existing Mayan villages surrounding the Lake.

10.01.2022 Teotihuacan is one of the most spectaculars sites in Mexico, and just an hour away from the city. It’s best known for it’s Pyramids (the Sun and the Moon) but it was one of the biggest cities in the ancient Mesoamerica and revered by the different pre-hispanic societies as it was the place where the Gods were conceived. At it’s peak it held 200.000 people (around 600 BC) but it was mysteriously abandoned as a city and only the two main Pyramids remained as a sacred place. T...he view from the top leave you breathless (and not only for the effort of climbing) trying to imagine how perfectly it was build more than two thousand years ago. It’s an experience that our passengers are unable to explain to those who had never been, and that we will share again with the group joining us in February 2021. If you think you may be interested in our group, please contact us See more

08.01.2022 And finally, before we "leave" Guatemala, what about Orchids? Here are some examples of what can be on display. I never thought back then when I took this photos that one day I was going to be so hooked up.

07.01.2022 Jose Cuervo is a famous name in Mexico from Spanish origin. Cuervo means crow and it has been linked with tequila industry since 1758. King Ferdinand of Spain gave Jose Cuervo the nod to start an agave farm in the region of Jalisco, New Spain then, and Mexico today. Tequila was exported for the first time in 1873 to US. Amazingly the company is still run by the Cuervo family. There is great misconception that the way to drink tequila is cowboy style thrown down ones throat ...in one gulp. A shot should be sipped and enjoyed on its own or mixing with a wide variety of cocktails. The visit to Jose Cuervo gave our fully escorted group the information to understand the method, dedication, work and experience to create such a good product. With generous tasting of every kind of tequila (I could not pass the second though!) our passengers left with a clear (or not so clear?) idea of the benefits of tequila. According to the Tequila Society it is such a cool spirit with a diverse range of individual natural flavours. There are so many ways to enjoy it. It's not fattening, fantastic in cocktails, and 100% Agave Tequila leaves you with no hangover if it is consumed properly. Let’s drink to Cuervo’s Golden Rule: the tequila from Tequila!!! You can do it if you join us in our escorted tour departing Brisbane in February 2021. Contact us for more information. See more

05.01.2022 Chichicastenango Markets is one of many highlights of Guatemala. Nestled in the highlands, it is one hour and thirty minutes drive from Antigua. The markets or Chichi as locals know the country town have been there since different Maya communities have been trading their produce, services and fabulous textiles there. Held on Thursdays and Sundays in the morning, it is a must to see, smell and breathe all along. The drive is an experience in itself. We go through little villag...es where locals are waking up and smiling school kids walking to school in narrow roads. Once in the Market’s maze, you walk along many blocks packed with colourful bags, tapestries, sashes and shoes. You can also admire all what you can imagine made of silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper and sisal. When you reach the steps of Chichicastenango Church, the steps are covered in flowers for sale. It is a delight for the senses that can be experienced in our next escorted tour to Latin America departing in February 2021. See more

05.01.2022 Amalia Hernández Navarro (born Mexico City, September 1, 1917 - November 5, 2000) was a Mexican ballet choreographer and founder of the world-renowned Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. She is considered the pioneer in developing Baile Folklorico. Hernández was inspired by the way the children played and wanted to express her feelings and emotions that she had through dancing. In 1952, she founded the Mexican Folk Ballet with only 8 dancers. By 1959 the ensemble grew to 60 performe...rs. It was commissioned to represent Mexico at the Pan American Games in Chicago, Illinois in 1959. And the rest is history. Since 1960, she has created over 60 choreographies and her famous ballet has performed uninterruptedly Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. It is one of the most enjoyable cultural activities in our fully escorted tours to Mexico to be able to immerse yourself in the Mexican traditions. And if you want to see it personally join us for our 2021 tour See more

04.01.2022 Public transport in Guatemala has peculiar characteristics. Called chicken buses are recycled former US school buses. Usually painted in vibrant colours are popular within cities for short distance and particularly the cities of Antigua, Lake Atitlan and Monterrico. They transport people usually carrying big loads of goods wrapped in huge hand made baskets or mantas a piece of colourful fabric. The name chicken may relate to the noise that a packed bus with people’s con...versations may create. It is not uncommon though seeing live animals from chooks to goats. Often there is a two men partnership operation. One has a proper licence and drives the bus while the ayudante or helper is responsible for passengers and luggage. The interesting aspect is that the organizing the luggage task is done while the bus is in motion on the roof at the same time yelling the name of next destination. Next time in Guatemala will be in March 2021. If you are game enough you can have a ride, otherwise you can admire the skills of driver and helper from the side of the road. See more

03.01.2022 Busking is an integral part of Cuban life since they re opened their doors to tourism. Not only there is a musical group in every corner, petrol station or Hotel lobby, but there are also people walking with funny attires hoping a distracted tourist will take a photo of them and then charging money for it. It took my street smarts a long way to get away from the 10 Euros that this kiss would have cost me, but the picture was worth the 3 that we settle for. We'll be back there in February 2021 and we still have some spots available (the group will be less than 15 people as always). Contact us now if you are interested.

02.01.2022 Antigua Arts & Crafts market boasts a huge collection of Maya clothing, as well as hundreds of masks and wood carvings. The huipiles, local heavily embroidery women tops, cortes a seven m piece of strong cotton that serves as skirt, fajas, elaborated cotton belts and other garments are arranged by region, so it makes for a fascinating visit whether you're buying or not. Close to the iconic Antigua’s Arch the Craft Hall may provide a true gift for the senses, where every item has been assessed as genuinely handmade, from wooden and straw toys to the most intricate needlework. Mayan tradition in the textile industry shines after over 1000 year history

02.01.2022 I am asking those who love the great outdoors to post a picture. Just ONE pic. No description. The goal is to flood Facebook with positives instead of negativity! Please COPY the text, put a picture on YOUR page, and let’s look at these beautiful pictures. This is mine.
