20.01.2022 Unfortunately, due to Dr Sean Chan’s commitments on the Gold Coast he will not be returning to Latitude 19 Health in 2020. We would like to thank Dr Sean for his care and commitment to our island community over the past three years. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours and he will be missed by all of us.

17.01.2022 Magnetic Island Community We have been working hard over the last 24 hours to raise awareness with key stake holders of the issues surrounding our current doctor shortage. Contact yesterday with Phillip Thompson's office has led to him raising this issue with Minister Hunt and Minister Colebeck in Canberra.... I will be involved in a joint meeting with Minister Colebeck's office, Phillip Thompson and his staff within the week to discuss primary health care needs on Magnetic Island. I have also had contact with QLD Health today and will attend a meeting with several QLD Health representatives, Sandra Caulfield (CEO Rural Health Management Services and an island resident to come up with a joint model of healthcare that is sustainable and will meet the needs of the Magnetic Island Community long term. These are positive steps forward and will hopefully result in a primary health outcome that is suitable for our community. Thank you to Phillip Thompson and QLD Health for your quick response. We will keep you posted.

06.01.2022 During the next 4 weeks as Latitude 19 Health transitions toward a different business model, there will be interruption to service delivery and our ability to maintain our current business hours. That being said we may have days where we do not have a doctor but there will always be a doctor at QLD Health (MIHSC). We will do our best to fit patients in where we can.... We ask that patients please ring reception if you require an appointment and remember to book well ahead for scripts. See more

05.01.2022 As we continue to make adjustments to our business hours, be sure to book well ahead for routine appointments and scripts. Dr Jarrod continues to go above and beyond to see as many people as possible. Unfortunately, on some days we will have limited consulting hours due to the ongoing doctor shortage.... Remember to dial 000 in an emergency.

05.01.2022 We have been advised that we have a locum doctor for two weeks from Monday. Thank you QLD Health for help!

02.01.2022 OUTCOME FROM MEETING HELD 2nd JULY 2020 Subject: Options for Sustainable Primary Care on Magnetic Island - key points from workshop held 2/7/2020 Dear Community Members,... 1. QLD Health hosted a meeting on Thursday 2 July on Maggie Island in light of a GP shortage on the island 2. Stakeholders who attended included community members, Magnetic Island Rate Payers Association, QLD Health, GPs, Emergency services, Allied Health and North Queensland Primary Health Network 3. Community members raised concerns about reducing levels of medical care on Magnetic Island and asked for a sustainable medical workforce and health care service with the capacity to manage emergencies as well as General Practice. 4. Community members reiterated their long-term goal of having a Multipurpose Health Service on the island that catered for the population needs with some inpatient capacity for those times when emergency retrievals were not possible. 5. A number of factors that have contributed to the Magnetic Island GPs crisis include Federal govt classification changes to the remoteness criteria and a long-term decline in Federal funding to community general practice over successive governments 6. QLD Health affirmed their commitment to continuing to provide 24/7 emergency and acute care services on the island in partnership with Queensland Ambulance Service and are exploring new medical workforce models to better support the sustainability of General Practice on the Island. 7. The long-term solution for Maggie will likely involve public private partnerships with practitioners on the island with support and contribution from the local community, JCU GP Training, the PHN and local health workers. Latitude 19 management is in discussion with local GPs with regards to business models and arrangements to strengthen the Latitude 19 GP practice on Magnetic Island. Many community members were unable to attend the 2 July Workshop due to the limitations on 20 people as a result of COVID 19, and have requested a follow up community meeting. A community meeting is being planned to update the community and local medical and health staff on progress following the 2 July workshop. The Community Meeting will be held at 2pm on Magnetic Island on Thursday the 16th of July. In light of the COVID 19 restrictions the attendees will be limited to 60 people (this was originally 100 people). Please note, you will be required to register your attendance via the below link. To ensure numbers are confirmed prior to the meeting, registration closes on Tuesday 14 July, at 4.30pm. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/magnetic-island-community-m Townsville Hospital & Health Service
