23.01.2022 ‘NAIDOC is a reminder for all that the history of Australia did not begin with its discovery by European and Dutch explorers. Instead it cherishes that our land was first walked upon by feet that nurtured, farmed, explored and populated by First Nation peoples. It is more than acknowledging culture, it is fighting to maintain it.’ Mel Holland, Indigenous La Trobe student and peer-learning advisor. NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal an...d Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year's theme is #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe, recognising that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Mel discovered her Aboriginal heritage in her 20s, and has since strived to better understand and celebrate the history of First National peoples, and guides her children in doing the same. 21.01.2022 Jules Kangeta spent 14 years in a refugee camp in Burundi. Just two years after arriving in Australia, he'd already completed both a Certificate 4 in Accounting & Bookkeeping and a Diploma of Business. Now he's preparing to join us as a Master of Social Work student in Semester 1, 2021. 'Through my life experiences, I have an understanding of what and how to help migrants for a smooth integration. Studying is a good and easy way to help migrants integrate into Australian soc...iety.' Jules hopes to do more for the community with his postgraduate degree. He currently works part-time with Food Next Door Co-op, which helps support new migrants from farming backgrounds, and is also a Casual Community Guide with AMES Australia. We wish him all the best in his pursuits!

Lucy's novel Wolfe Islandwhich is set on a sinking island, in a country riven by racial violence and social inequity impressed judges with its complex depiction of the fierceness and determination of women. ... 'A prize like this asserts and reasserts the truth that women matter, and always have, and that their lives are intrinsically interesting,' Lucy said. 'Women exist at the centre of their own worlds, not on the periphery of men’s.'
