20.01.2022 Basic engineering design assumptions of the past will not apply in the future, says Chris Stoltz, our professor of practice in engineering, on the world post-pandemic. For example, engineers will have to rethink their assumptions about passenger densities on public transport and planes which will impact the design of trains, buses, planes and places where people board and disembark.

17.01.2022 Our Exercise Physiology lecturer Dr Brett Gordon has received funding from the Holsworth Research Initiative in the La Trobe Rural Health School to investigate if dietary supplements containing caffeine and capsaicin (the active component of chili peppers) can help maintain weight loss. "At the moment it is particularly important to manage conditions like obesity as that has been identified as a condition more commonly associated with worse outcomes if COVID-19 is contracted," Brett says. More in this story.

14.01.2022 Best wishes to paramedicine student Sheldon Burke, who is shaving his hair tonight to raise funds for cancer research. Awesome effort from a top student.

13.01.2022 We think Madga Szubanski may just have given the world a new hashtag during yesterday’s Violet Marshman Oration #twittertoughened. La Trobe researcher Prof Jennifer McIntosh interviewed the award-winning actor for our third annual oration, addressing how social media and COVID-19 impacts mental health. On a triple-doughnut day for Victoria, Magda praised the state’s successful pandemic response compared to countries like America. "This is why I didn't go to Hollywood, they'r...e crazy," she half-joked. Magda addressed the online trolling she received after appearing in State Government COVID-safe awareness ads. "You get Twitter-toughened," she said. "What's distressing is the politicisation of health. As far as I was concerned, it was as simple as doing a 'slip, slop, slap' ad. Magda summed up COVID's impact by saying, "The whole world to varying degrees has experienced the end of life as we know it ... how everyone is going to cope is going to be really individual." She added, "it's a slippery slope from resilience to denial." And; "People need to be taught resilience and compassion... we assume everyone has the same emotional skill level and we don't." Thanks to all who joined us for the online interview, and for the wonderful questions and comments contributed, like this final message; "Thank you Magda for your genuine enthusiasm, compassion and willingness to step into new spaces and take us with you."

07.01.2022 The La Trobe Art Institute’s View Street gallery launched its latest façade mid-lockdown, titled Work Worth Doing. New LAI director Bala Starr says Kay Abude’s photograph raises very public questions around labour inequality and the utility of artists’ work. Questions that have become urgent under COVID’s shadow, she says. For Bala, taking La Trobe’s art academy reins is more than worthwhile at this precarious time for established and emerging artists.... To work in and around culture is a form of service for me that’s a powerful idea, she says. I feel like I’m in the right place.

01.01.2022 When I bought my house, one of the things that appealed to me was the enclosed veranda, says creative arts student Lisa Butcher. It was a huge, private space and I loved it. There are Besser bricks across the front with gates at each end, I can see the street from the veranda and anyone passing can see me on the veranda, but it feels private. It was great until Covid happened. I live on a busy street, the traffic stopped. I usually have a constant flow of visitors to my ...house, that came to an abrupt halt. During lockdown the front veranda made my house feel more like a prison. The bricks felt like a barrier between me and the outside world. The feeling inspired Lisa’s photograph here, which also features in our end-of-year online exhibition, Festival 2020. For Lisa, art is a release. It’s a way of getting everything off my chest, unpacking everything that happened, looking at it from a different perspective, then putting it away and moving on, she says. Congratulations to all of our Bendigo campus exhibiting artists. You can view their work here. www.latrobeartsfestival.com
