17.01.2022 Gender inequality negatively impacts the mental and physical health of both men and women, but in different ways. Women are two to three times more likely to experience depression and anxiety then men. The gender pay gap, inequality of opportunity and harmful stereotypes about sexuality and body image all play a part in this. Gender inequality also creates the social conditions for violence against women to occur. The Men's Project identified that men who conform to, and en...dorse traditional masculine norms and stereotypes, are more likely to engage in risky behaviours that put them at risk of harm or injury, are less likely to seek to go to the doctor or seek help when they need it and are more likely than other men to have perpetrated violence against women or other men. https://bit.ly/32WP4us

Council took the opportunity to check in with young people as to how the COVID19 situation and second round of Stage 3 restrictions were aff...ecting them. Members indicated the positives and negatives of the pandemic on their schooling and social life, identifying some new habits they’d like to keep post-COVID. A few highlights from the most recent meeting included the youth councillors’ critique of the last council meeting which focused on the 2020/21 council budget and the new branding and naming strategy. During the meeting Latrobe City Mayor Cr Clancey was able to announce and congratulate Natasha Murcott as the 2020 Youth Mayor and Stuart Gibson as the Deputy Youth Mayor following a ballot of members.
14.01.2022 There’s no question that the job market is tight these days. By shopping local, you are also helping to keep a business open and secure jobs for the people within it - you are helping the local economy in more ways than one. So think about that the next time you consider an option at a local shop versus one that may be slightly cheaper at a big box store. Think about the people that your support could help to employ. If your business has adapted its products or service model... over past weeks and months, we can help you communicate this through a new Latrobe City business directory. By completing an online form, local businesses will be added to a database and listed below. https://bit.ly/2FD8OuJ
13.01.2022 CONNECT, COLLABORATE & CELEBRATE! This week is Social Inclusion Week. It aims to help all Australians feel included and valued, giving everyone the opportunity to participate fully in society. Equality is when we are all given the same supports, equity is when we are given what we need as individuals, but justice is when the barriers are removed completely = social inclusion at it’s best!!
13.01.2022 You’re dining out in this day and age of COVID-19, but what to do with your face mask while you eat? According to the Department of Health and Human Services, diners should keep their face mask in a paper bag or zip lock bag while they eat, to ensure the mask remains clean. If this is not possible, make sure to wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand gel before you put on your face mask.... When you take your face mask off, be sure not to touch the front of the mask to avoid possible contamination. Instead, remove your mask by the sides. You should always use hand sanitizer or wash your hands before and after changing your face mask. Also be sure to maintain physical distancing of at least 1.5 metres and practise good hygiene. Face coverings must be worn at other times including when paying for the meal, using the facilities or stepping outside to take a phone call. Information supplied by Department of Health and Human Services.

06.01.2022 Men often grow up with the notion that 'boys will be boys' and many stereotypes that encourage bravado, dominance and control. This belief can lead men to behave in a way that is harmful to their relationships, in particular, their intimate partner relationships. The ideal male can be seen to have the power and control over women including making the decisions around intimacy. Sexual assault can occur as a result of this belief. We encourage men to call out controlling behav...iour when you see it amongst your mates, your sporting clubs, pubs and clubs. When men in your presence make sexist comments, controlling or dominating remarks, tell or share explicit materials, challenge this behaviour in a safe way including walking away, not laughing. Tell them it is inappropriate and make sure you role model appropriate behaviour around women.

04.01.2022 This month marks the 20 year anniversary of the relationship between Latrobe City and Takasago City which was born from an economic development project undertaken in Latrobe Valley by Japanese Company Kobe Steel in the 1980s. Over 200 families from the Takasago area resided in Latrobe Valley during this time and had a significant economic impact on the region. At the request of Kobe Steel and Takasago City, the former City of Morwell (now part of Latrobe City) commenced th...e process of establishing a relationship with Takasago City in the early 1990s. This ultimately led to Latrobe City Council entering into a formal relationship with Takasago City in October 2000. In June 1991, fifteen Mount Fuji Flowering Cherry Blossom Trees were planted by Japanese staff of Brown Coal Liquefaction Victoria (BCLV) to serve as a constant reminder of the lasting friendships made between Japanese staff of the pilot Coal to Oil Plant and the residents of the then City of Morwell These Cherry Blossom Trees were planted at Kernot Hall and are sight to behold in full bloom throughout Spring. If you are exploring our great City why not make a visit to the garden which serves as a permanent reminder of the Sister City relationship between Latrobe City and Takasago. Council is currently compiling a book to document the 20 year history of this important relationship.
04.01.2022 On 1 December 2019, new state government laws to improve swimming pool and spa safety came into effect in Victoria.
