Unlike Mooting, the Witness Examination Competition is an individual-based competition. Competitors are assigned the role of either prosecution or defence and are tasked with examining and cross-examining two witnesses to uncover the facts of the crime. This is a skills-based competition so the focus is not on legal research but rather your advoca...cy and adaptability. Students are judged on their their quality of questioning, clarity of expression, as well as their use and knowledge of the rules of evidence.There are no prerequisites, so it is a great opportunity for first-time competitors and students undertaking LAW2ECP, as well as more seasoned competitors to develop valuable advocacy skills. 14.01.2022 Justice Mapping Project See Your Change is looking for student volunteers! See Your Change is a strategy, communications and impact evaluation consulting firm. They work with clients to build people power, shift public discourse and win policy changes towards creating a fairer world. See Your Change is leading a major research project which maps criminal justice advocacy in Australia, and outlines pathways toward decarceration and justice reform. They are seeking applicat...ions from students in disciplines such as law, criminology or public policy to work on this landmark report, together with the See Your Change team and high-profile community leaders. Students will be asked to undertake research into the drivers of mass incarceration, criminalisation and policing in Australia. Sub-themes include female incarceration, ATSI incarceration, discrimination, police accountability and misconduct, youth justice and privatisation. They are seeking students who are interested in topics such as human rights, tax and corruption, criminal law, gender studies, and disadvantage and discrimination. Students will be asked to complete an average 8 12 hours of research per week from week of 26th October 2020 week of 14th December 2020. See Your Change is flexible as to how these hours are organised: you could work 1 2 days a week during this time or work full time for a few weeks. This year on the 12th November, we have the privilege of hearing from Andrea Skinner on the impacts of Access to Justice due to COVID-19. Andrea is a Family and Criminal barrister with extensive experience as an advocate. She has appeared in the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court in the Family Law Jurisdiction, County Court, VOCAT, the Magistrates Court and VCAT for Family Violence... and Criminal or Regulatory related matters. Andrea will be providing her insight on the court’s adaptation of technology and how this has impacted access to justice, the availability of judge only trials and the implementation of Emergency Case Management Protocols, new COVID related issues arising in family law (including the creation of a COVID-19 list) and the impact of delays associated with the vacation of Jury Trials in the Criminal Courts.
