22.01.2022 LTU Alumni, Jack Wilkinson, speaks to the experience he gained during his time at STF: "Student theatre got me through my time at university. It was the thing I most looked forward to every semester, and it's where I made all of the friendships that have continued after leaving university. Student theatre also lead to my first job in the theatre industry through the experience it gave me working as a lighting designer and technician, which helped me to then start my own compa...ny. Without a group like La Trobe Student Theatre I would never have had the opportunity to learn so much about the technical side of theatre production so quickly, or without having to go to an education provider that specifically did the technical elements. Because the student theatre group exists, I was able to study my Bachelor of Science while also pursuing my love for theatre and the only other people that I know who have done something like that all went to La Trobe. Student theatre isn't just for the "artsy" members of the university. It's for everyone. It's a community that has a place for anyone and everyone that wants to be involved, no matter your background, level of experience or what degree you're doing. It's a place where anyone can come and be a part of something that changes lives. Arts are the heart and soul of every organisation, city, country, the entire world. Without the student theatre group, you would be depriving an incredible number of your student body the opportunity to be a part of that. I chose La Trobe University because of its arts program and student theatre group. If those programs stay, other people will make the same choice." Red, Moat Festival 2016 If you have a #becauseofstudenttheatre story, we want to hear it: https://latrobesu.org.au/Forms/because-campaign

21.01.2022 Current student Lewis Freeman reflects on his time at La Trobe University and how performing and writing in theatre has improved his confidence and mental health in this really important testimonial: "The first year of my time at uni didn't get off to the best start. I was left feeling lonely, with my anxiety on red alert, speech impediment in overdrive and my self-esteem in the dumps. I wasn't able to even bring myself to walk into a class, let alone join into any kind of cl...assroom discussion. I found myself locked away, suffocating in my room, only ever leaving to get groceries or to attend my overnight job. It wasn't hell, but it was definitely getting there. Though things turned around for me when I found myself involved in La Trobe Student Theatre, a place outside of that dingy hole. From acting to a bit of writing, I had never felt more alive, and that's gotta be an understatement. That's not to say that my time at Student Theatre has cured my problems, and I don't often find myself back in dingy holes. Hell no, that would be crazy talk, as much as the STF team are a bunch of wizards. But it has definitely helped me reach a new level of self-confidence that I never expected to ever have. I can now freely walk the Agora with a hoddie unzipped and not crack at the pressure of being seen wearing an unzipped hoodie. But also with my stutter and feeling a greater resilience against the fear of public and 1:1 speaking. Hell, I did the unthinkable and actually took someone's order through Drive-Thru. I may not study theatre, but the skills and the experience I've had have helped me immensely so far, and I expect them to stick with me for a long, long time. Right beside the pile of sweet memories and the connections I've made with all those lovely people there. Please don't let our Student Theatre die." 15.01.2022 Clancy Fraser, an LTU alumni who graduated in 2013, has shared some of the many benefits she gained from her years at STF: "Because of student theatre I have friends. Because of student theatre I think of university as some of the best years of my life and always will. Because of student theatre I feel comfortable in my own skin. Because of student theatre I am able to give presentations at my work and speak openly and confidently outside of work. Because of student theatre ...I have a support network and an employment network. Because of student theatre I feel glad that I chose La Trobe over other universities... Even though I feel my degree may have been more highly valued if I had gone somewhere else. Because of student theatre for the first time in my life I felt that I belonged, that I was valued and that I was good at something. Student Theatre was not just an extracurricular hobby at university -it WAS my university. It was home." 15.01.2022 PROPOSED CUTS TO LTU THEATRE La Trobe University has proposed to cut the theatre program from the curriculum. At this point, the cuts to theatre are not final and the theatre academics are presenting a case to stop the cuts in the coming days. They're asking past and current students, and other members of the La Trobe community, to provide a paragraph of support saying: ... What studying at La Trobe has meant for you Why creativity and performance are important to you Why future students should have access to it You can email your paragraph to Bagryana Popov by Wednesday Nov 18 on [email protected]. These cuts, if finalised, will be an enormous loss for future students and for the creative arts in Australia. La Trobe Theatre needs your voice to stop them. The Seagull, Moat Fest 2018 (in collaboration with LTU Theatre)

15.01.2022 It's been roughly two months since we launched our 'because of Student Theatre' campaign alongside our Open Letter to the LTU Vice Chancellor, John Dewar. Over these two months, we have received hundreds of stories about what Student Theatre has given to you, our beautiful community, in the past, the present, and what you hope it can provide to students in the future. We still don't know what will happen to Student Theatre & Film in 2021, but we think it's time to wrap up this element of the campaign and send off our hundreds of stories to the Vice Chancellor. If you have a #becauseofstudenttheatre story, there is still time to submit a testimonial. Our open letter is still open for submissions until Friday 5 Sept: https://latrobesu.org.au/Forms/because-campaign

14.01.2022 The next show part of La Mama North: Freshly Minted is SAME GOD LAST NIGHT, written and performed by William Foley. Love Speaks. Love Acts. So try to use it in all ways. This the journey there and back. A raw homecoming to coming out, told in more ways than one. What makes up the self? Is it history or lived experience? Foster is home now. Questioning it all. Looking back on memories, confronting change. Theatre is the median. Live from his Parents living room. Yes, you can... dance. No, you can’t undo the past. But you can examine its contents and imagine something better. Head over to La Mama Theatre to register for this free event >> https://lamama.com.au//la-mama-north-fring/freshly-minted/

11.01.2022 "Why do we recoil whenever we see the words Student Theatre, associating it with work thats amateurish, second-rate, and not worth our time? Why do we relegate student artists to a subset of theatre when all creatives struggle to make compelling content themselves?" STF legends Lakshmi Ganapathy and Fergus Black have written an article about the importance of student theatre in the arts ecology for ArtsHub, check it out

09.01.2022 Catch all the STF updates in the latest edition of The Player, including a sappy intro by STF legend Lucy Rees "Student Theatre is chugging along as we near the halfway point of Lockdown Two: Its Stage Four Baby! As absurd as life feels right now, we can see in the near distance, a stage, lit up, waiting as patiently for us as we are waiting for it. Hope seeps in through the cracks of our Homes of Isolation when creative projects are being discussed; theatre is keeping us... going, even in its absence. We are going to look back on this period of time with both exhaustion and a great respect for our community and ourselves, for our ability to work and play and study and live during the absurdity of a global pandemic. The absurdity of this time reflects the absurdity of the plays were reading (every Wednesday at 12pm) and all the things we have in store; (a satirical comedy Revue, a show of short student-written, directed and performed plays, and a six-line writing project) but with the absurd comes humour and relief, which speaks to the things that keep us going; laughing, communication, self care, taking time out, and being open to change. With change in mind, this year our annual writing prize, The Geoffrey Milne Memorial Writing Award will be broken up into three commissions of $500 each. These commissions are for students and recent alumni to make a brand new piece of short online theatre, theatre for the digital age, theatre that can one day be for the stage, that one we can see, right in front of us, as we patiently wait this out, for the sake of our loved ones, and our beloved city, full of art, full of theatre, and full of love. Read on to apply for a Geoffrey Milne Commission, and all the other ways to get involved, and remember to treat yourself like you would a dear friend."
