11.01.2022 Grand Final week always brings with it great stories and working in aged care we definitely consider ourselves very lucky to hear first hand the recounts of some well known moments in history. When chatting with resident Len this week he shared with us his clear recollections of footy back in the mid 40s - l’m a Carlton supporter and I used to go every week to watch games. I was about 15. I remember walking to the game with my mates, we would roll up a Herald and kick it al...ong Sydney Road on the way to the game. I went to the 1945 Grand Final and by geez you’ve never seen anything like it, it was a bloodbath! The brawls started from the first siren and didn’t stop. The players, the crowd, even officials and medics, it just seemed to be going on everywhere. At half time I remember being on the ground talking to the Carlton skipper. He was having a smoke and a swig of whiskey and he assured me they had it in the bag. Things were much different back then! Carlton beat South Melbourne to win the flag by 28 points. Thanks to Len for sharing with us this very memorable occasion, it’s fascinating to think about how much times have changed
