17.01.2022 Hume Highway Car Jackings A man and woman charged over a series of alleged car jackings and firearm threats on the Hume Highway at Marulan and Sutton Forrest on Saturday have been refused bail. The 33-year-old man and 31-year-old woman, both from Dubbo, appeared in Parramatta Local Court on Sunday, after having been refused bail by police the day before.... Police will also allege that the pair, from Dubbo, threatened a woman and two teenage girls with a firearm during one of the incidents. At about 4:10pm Saturday, officers attached to Hume Police District were conducting routine patrols on the Federal Highway, south of Goulburn, when they saw a Toyota Hilux allegedly speeding. Checks revealed the utility had been reported stolen from Molong the previous day. Officers commenced a pursuit after the driver allegedly failed to stop when directed and instead accelerated away from police. South of Marulan, officers deployed road spikes, puncturing the front tyre of the ute. However, the driver continued to Brayton Road when he and a female passenger got out and allegedly threatened a couple and their baby with a shortened firearm. The man and woman got into the family's Ford Territory and drove it back onto the Hume Highway, heading north. The SUV was then driven to a service station at Sutton Forest, where it crashed into a guard rail. Police will allege the man and the women then approached a black Ford Focus at the service station, threatening a woman and two teenage girls with the firearm before stealing their car. About 4.30pm, officers saw the vehicle on the Hume Highway at Yanderra, north of Mittagong. Officers initiated a short pursuit but it was again terminated due to safety concerns. Police will allege about 5.45pm, the car was being driven along Narellan Road, Mount Annan, where it was involved in a collision with three other cars before leaving the scene. About 6.45pm, PolAir tracked the car to Irving Street, Parramatta, where officers from Parramatta Police Area Command, the Public Order and Riot Squad and the Dog Unit arrested the pair, who were taken to Parramatta Police Station. Officers also recovered a shortened firearm. 15.01.2022 SARS-CoV-2 lifespan on surfaces Researchers at CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, have found that SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, can survive for up to 28 days on common surfaces including banknotes, glass such as that found on mobile phone screens - and stainless steel. The research, undertaken at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) in Geelong, found that SARS-CoV-2:... survived longer at lower temperatures tended to survive longer on non-porous or smooth surfaces such as glass, stainless steel and vinyl, compared to porous complex surfaces such as cotton survived longer on paper banknotes than plastic banknotes. Results from the study The effect of temperature on persistence of SARS-CoV-2 on common surfaces was published in Virology Journal (https://rdcu.be/b8dik). CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall said surface survivability research builds on the national science agency’s other COVID-19 work, including vaccine testing, wastewater testing, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) manufacture and accreditation, and big data dashboards supporting each state. Establishing how long the virus really remains viable on surfaces enables us to more accurately predict and mitigate its spread, and do a better job of protecting our people. We can only defeat this virus as Team Australia with the best Australian science, working alongside industry, government, research and the Australian community, Dr Marshall said. Dr Debbie Eagles is Deputy Director of ACDP, which has been working on both understanding the virus and testing a potential vaccine. "Our results show that SARS-CoV-2 can remain infectious on surfaces for long periods of time, reinforcing the need for good practices such as regular hand washing and cleaning surfaces. At 20 degrees Celsius, which is about room temperature, we found that the virus was extremely robust, surviving for 28 days on smooth surfaces such as glass found on mobile phone screens and plastic banknotes. For context, similar experiments for Influenza A have found that it survived on surfaces for 17 days, which highlights just how resilient SARS-CoV-2 is, explained Dr Eagles. CSIRO, in partnership with Australian Department of Defence, undertook the studies in collaboration with the 5 Nation Research and Development (5RD) Council, which comprises representatives from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

14.01.2022 Fire permits suspended as weekend heatwave expected All fire permits in the Wingecarribee Shire have been suspended, as the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts heatwave conditions across the weekend. Temperatures are expected to soar to 35 in Bowral on Saturday, with light wins becoming northwesterly, 20 to 25 km/h in the middle of the day, and then becoming lighter in the evening. Sunday will bring a slight chance of showers or thunderstorm in the afternoon. Winds north to north...westerly 20 to 30 km/h are also forecast, tending northwest to southwesterly 25 to 40 km/h in the morning before becoming lighter in the evening. The Southern Highlands Rural Fire Service (RFS) asked locals to check the fire danger rating over the weekend. Deputy Commissioner at NSW RFS, Peter McKechnie said the conditions are dangerous, and can spread very quickly. The winds, especially in grassland areas will make fire spread very quickly, and these wind changes as they move through will easily mean fires can change directions. Where it may be threatening one part now, easily with the wind change it will threaten the other side, he said. Mr McKechnie added that a total fire ban may come into effect, and urged locals to do their part for increased bushfire preparedness. We are particularly asking that landholders and farmers make sure that they’ve got firebreaks in place,’ he said. Across the state, strong and gusty winds are predicted for inland NSW, with raised dust also likely. Thunderstorms in the days following may also see winds increase. 13.01.2022 Gumnut Patisserie apprentice takes out State’s Best at 2020 NSW Training Awards Retail Baking apprentice Joshua Nickl has taken out the top honour at the 2020 NSW Training Awards held in a virtual ceremony broadcast tonight. Member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith MP, congratulated Joshua on being named 2020 NSW Apprentice of the Year as well as a People’s Choice winner, saying he was an inspiration to anyone thinking of pursuing a fulfilling and rewarding career through voca...tional education and training (VET). Pastry is Joshua’s life. He grew up in his parent’s patisserie, so it’s no surprise he’s driven to follow in their footsteps, especially as his father was once a finalist in the NSW Apprentice of the Year Award himself, Mr Smith said. Joshua regularly competes in industry competitions achieving the Baking Association of Australia’s National Apprentice Pastry Chef of the Year in 2017. He even dedicated his spare time to train over 20 additional hours a week with The Australian Pastry Team. In 2019, they competed in France’s Coupe Du Monde competition placing sixth, achieving Australia's best result yet. Joshua has trained under some of the industry’s best pastry chefs at work and under world-renowned Dammika Hatharasinghe at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT). In 2018 Joshua topped his CIT class and won Most Outstanding Apprentice of All Trades. Constantly seeking improvement, Joshua said he has also travelled Europe on a working holiday learning new pastry skills and making life-long industry connections. As my career progresses, I’m excited to train and lead the pastry chefs of the future, he said. The best piece of advice I’ve been given is, that a chef doesn’t produce an amazing dish once, a true chef produces an amazing dish consistently, time and time again, he added. Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said the students, educators and training providers represented at the NSW Training awards were living proof that NSW’s VET system offered a first-class choice for a rewarding career and lifestyle. I congratulate Joshua on being named NSW Apprentice of the Year and wish him the best when he represents NSW at the Australian Training Awards in November, Mr Lee said. The NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by the NSW Department of Education in recognition of outstanding achievements in VET. The Apprentice of the Year Award was presented this year thanks to a partnership with the NSW Skills Board.
