10.01.2022 Many new parents will hear professionals stress the importance of reading to their child every night, even from an early age, but quite often they neglect to provide the reasoning behind making reading a part of the daily routine. Here is a website that explains exactly WHY reading to your children is so crucial. http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/reading.html... Not only does reading to your child provide them with the building blocks for literacy when they get older, it also helps develop their ability to attend to activities, as well as their social and language development. Here are some tips for reading to your child: > Infants: Hold your child close Use funny voices and sounds to make reading even more fun Point to different objects and say, Look, its a _______ > Toddlers: Let them turn the pages if they want to Talk about the pictures Ask questions like, What is this?, Can you point to the _____? and What colour is the ______? > As they get older: Ask them questions like, What do you think will happen next? and Why do you think they did that? After reading the story, encourage your child to tell you the story (help them by using the pictures and prompting)

06.01.2022 Is spelling important? Lauren is attending a seminar today on literacy development (presented by Dr Maryanne Wolf) and she came across this gem that really demonstrates HOW important spelling is! Thought you would all get a bit of a laugh out of this. But on a more serious note, if your child is experiencing literacy difficulties, please call Laughter and Learning Speech Pathology on 0423927027.

01.01.2022 "How old should my child be when they say their first words?" This is a question that I get asked on a regular basis, and the short answer is that a child should be using words by 12 months of age. If your child is over 12 months and is still not using any words, the time for therapy is now! The research has shown time and time again, that the most effective way to treat language difficulties is through early intervention. Early intervention could not only reduce the severit...y/impact of possible language difficulties, but it could also save you time and money in the future. If you have any concerns regarding your childs speech or language development, call us at Laughter & Learning Speech Pathology, on 0423927027.
