15.01.2022 June is Scoliosis Awareness Month. Did you know one of the roles of orthotists is to assess and manage young people who have postural or structural scoliosis an...d kyphosis? Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. Kyphosis is an increased forward curve of the thoracic (upper) spine which presents as rounded shoulders. Treatment options include observation, spinal bracing and surgery. Orthotists are allied health professionals who are the experts in assessing, prescribing, manufacturing and fitting custom made spinal orthoses. Spinal orthoses work by applying 3-dimensional corrective forces to the torso to improve spinal alignment and encourage symmetrical vertebral growth.
