25.01.2022 MULTIPLE MEDICATIONS & THE ELDERLY The World Health Organization has evaluated that there is one person aged 60 years or more, in every nine people. This demography of the elderly population depicts a significant challenge for the health care sectors around the globe as multiple diseases are associated with increasing age such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, arthritis, heart diseases, renal diseases, dementia, etc. As a result of which, the elderly population has to take ...many medications in a day that is referred to as 'multiple medications'. There is no strict definition of multiple medications but is generally referred to when five or more drugs are to be taken per day. Globally, various studies have shown that on an average, elderly people take 2 to 9 medications in a day. Being quite common, taking multiple medications is an area of concern for the elderly due to several reasons. As people age, a decline is seen in their cognitive function and memory. Therefore, it is possible for the elderly to administer medications improperly to themselves especially when many drugs are to be taken at one time. This may result in taking an inadequate dose of medications that may not be effective at all or may result in dangerous overdoses as well. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), overdoses are the number one cause of fatalities and the most common error related to medications. Prescription medications often have similar trade names that are easy to mix up. Elderly, particularly those having dementia, can mix them up specially when they apparently look similar. Anyone can get confused and overwhelmed by medical instructions and terminologies especially when he/she has to several drugs for many health issues together. The risk amplifies significantly when it comes to the elderly having complex conditions. Therefore, medication management is essential for them to prevent these unwanted and harmful consequences. Failing to do so might result in worsening conditions and even more serious results. This can be effectively prevented with the help of a ‘Medication Management Plan’. These plans can help the elderly to remind themselves how, when, and in what doses the medications should be taken. These plans are designed by a collaborative team of trained pharmacists and experienced clinicians after a comprehensive health review of the individuals and assessment of their medication requirements thoroughly. Every elderly taking multiple drugs should have one of these plans done. They are free and potentially lifesaving. If you would like to know more about Medication Managment Plans or if you think you could benefit from a Medication Management Plan, please contact your General Practitioner who can discuss this in detail with you.

18.01.2022 Wishing everyone a very happy and safe festive season!

14.01.2022 'A TIME TO LAUGH'..... :-) "Boy she sure has a sense of humor for an 'older lady'". Hmm, what does THAT mean? Getting older can sometimes mean finding more funny things in life. After all, "I've paid my dues!" "I've raised my kids." "I want to have fun." Aging and getting older should be fun! Aging should include a fun sense of humor! AGE AND HUMOR FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE... * As you get older, your secrets are safe with your friends. They can't remember them either * I would be unstoppable, if I could only get started...... * "I am having amnesia, dementia, and deja vu, all at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before . . ." * Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it * You can't stay young forever. That's just a theory, because you can be immature for your entire life * I live in my own little world. But it's okay --- they know me here * Forget health food. I'm at the age where I need all the preservatives I can get. * The nice thing about being senile is you can hide your own Easter eggs * I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over REMEMBER: You don't stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing!!!!!
