I don’t know about you but where is the time going It won’t be long we all will be doing our spring dance In the last few weeks our team has been busy undertaking a number of courses and one of these was a taping course. LOVE YOUR FEET THE PURPOSE OF TAPING Taping and strapping can be used for numerous reasons. These include: To aid muscles, ligaments and tendons in an attempt to prevent further injury Zinc oxide tapes are usually used to help restrict movement. They offer no stretch and can be used to immobilize and prevent movements through certain planes To restrict movement around painful joints We can use strapping tapes to ensure injured structures are offloaded either by restricting movement or realigning muscle groups To reduce stress of the injured structures To provide proprioceptive feedback Placing tape over the skin creates a proprioceptive effect which can aid the body’s natural motor control and make the athlete more aware of potentially movements and positions To compress swelling and soft tissue The elastication in certain tapes means that they can be used very effectively for soft tissue compression as they allow for muscle expansion beneath the tape and will not overly restrict movement To enhance the athletes confidence on return to training and sport following injury

14.01.2022 It’s TOOTSIE TUESDAY again !!! Over the next couple of months we thought it would great to introduce some of our newer team members. First up is ZACHARY COURTNEY who joined us in May We asked Zach just a few questions ... 1. Why did you decide to become a podiatrist I decided to become a podiatrist after working as a porter in a hospital in scotland. I understood that I wanted to work in health care after working in the hospital but was unsure of what area I wanted to go into. At the time I was studying sports science at college part time and after an anatomy class about gait mechanics, I knew it was for me. 2. What do you like most about being part of the team at Launceston Podiatry I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere the most about working here, makes working that much more enjoyable with a good team around you. 3. 11.01.2022 It’s Tootsie Tootsie Tuesday. Introducing the ever smiling Sonia Sonia joined us in March 2020 and is an enthusiastic podiatrist with a passion for all areas of podiatric medicine. We asked Sonia just a few questions.... 1. Why did you decide to become a podiatrist? I went to a podiatrist when I was around 5 years old because I used to walk on my toes and my mum was a bit concerned as most parents are when there kid is doing something odd. I had to get orthotics made and according to my mum I wouldn't stop taking about how they made a plaster cast of my feet, so I guess it kind of stuck with me all these years. 2. What do you like most about being part of the team at Launceston Podiatry? I really enjoy that everyone in our team gets along well and are easygoing. We can always have a good laugh which makes it a good work environment. 3. What do you love about Tassie? Definitely enjoying the more fresh and clean air compared to Melbourne. But no I am enjoying the beautiful walks and views especially finding new hiking routes to go on. Also enjoy getting to see the different parts of Tassie - basically doing all the touristy things.

04.01.2022 Hip hip hooray It’s TOOTSIE Tuesday Don’t forget to ....... LOVE YOUR FEET ... PLANTAR FASCIITIS Have you got sore feet in the morning? Have you got sore feet again when walking after resting? Have you got pain when you are walking, jumping or running? If you answered yes to any of these questions you may have Plantar Fasciitis. WHAT IS PLANTAR FASCIITIS? The plantar fascia is a thick ligament underneath your feet that connect your heel to the front of your foot. It is designed as a shock absorber and supports the arch of your foot, helping you walk. Your plantar fascia ligament undertakes a lot of wear and tear in your daily life. Too much pressure on your feet can result in small tears within the ligament. The plantar fascia becomes inflamed, and the inflammation causes heel pain and stiffness. CAUSES: As plantar fasciitis is an inflammatory condition there are many risk factors that may cause it. These range from having either a high or low arch, right calf muscles, participating in activities that repetitively stress the heel, such as running TREATMENT: There are a number of treatment regimes to help relieve the pain. Stretching the foot and leg muscles, wearing supportive shoes, cold therapy or even designed innersoles can help. 01.01.2022 It’s TOOTSIE TUESDAY we have exciting news!!! For the next few weeks we thought it would be great to share some articles and or blogs that our fabulous, fantast...ic, wonderful podiatrists ( need I say more) have written to educate everyone on keeping their feet in top top condition. Please have a read and like and share to anyone of your friends who you think may benefit . Happy reading and don’t forget to ..... LOVE YOUR FEET Chillblains It’s been a bit chilly of late and we have already seen a number of clients present to the clinic in the last few weeks concerned about their toes which are a red/blue/ purplish colour, swollen, itchy and also painful and their question is what is wrong with my toes and our answer is You have chilblains!!! So the question of the day is what are chilblains, also known as Erythemia Pernio, which I must say is a bit of a mouth full. Chillblains are painful regions of discoloured skin (usually red purple and or blue) which are more likely to develop on our extremities during the colder months. Most commonly they occur on your toes fingers nose, and even earlobes. They can cause a nasty itching or burning sensation and at times the skin which is affected can ulcerate. Ouch Chillblains tend to develop on our toes after they are exposed to prolonged cold and damp weather. This exposure causes the peripheral blood vessels to constrict in response to the cold. When the toes are warmed up they are often warmed too quickly, the blood flow returns rapidly and there is leakage of fluid from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissue and this can cause area of inflammation and swelling leading to chilblains. Chillblains can occur at any age but are more common in children and older people and also occur more in females than males. People who have reduced circulation to their extremities are also more likely to be affected, for instance people who are smokers and/or have been diagnosed with diabetes, Raynaud’s Pheneomenon, and also Lupus. So the big question is how, if I’m in a high risk group, how do I prevent getting these dreaded chillblains. Well the answer is prevention; as the old adage goes Prevention is better than cure. It is essential to keep your feet warm and dry as is possible. Try and keep your feet at a consistent temperature. Wearing multiple layers of clothing will help for instance wearing long johns, stockings or leggings will help in keeping your legs warm. Woollen or nature blended socks are also preferable and you can also purchase sock liners which are worn under your normal socks. It is also important to make sure your shoes fit well. Fur lined boots are also fabulous to wear and for some short period of time ye olde Ugg boot is appropriate. It is also essential to keep active which ensures you keep warm and also encourages blood flow to your extremities. If your feet do get cold make sure you warm them up gradually as you don’t want to go from one extreme of temperature to the other. Avoid going from cold tiles in the bathroom to a hot shower, and avoid coming in from the cold and putting your feet in contact with direct heat, g hot water bottle, heater, electric blanket, and heat pack. All these types of heat will cause the feet to warm too quickly. Instead massaging your feet with a suitable cream would be ideal. At Launceston Podiatry Clinic we also have the fabulous Perfectsense Paraffin wax therapy treatment which helps in the prevention and management of chillblains. Not only does it help in promoting blood flow to your feet it also is a wonderful 30 minutes of relaxation. How can we help, you ask, if you already have developed a chilblain? Well as podiatrists we can have a chat and see if there is something that can be done better in your prevention plan. We can also advise a variety of treatment protocols which will help in reducing the inflammatory process and ultimately get your feet back to optimal health.
