24.01.2022 Can you tell your period is coming because youre bloated, or your boobs jumped a size, or your nipples hurt to the touch? If you answered yes, it may be due a common hormonal imbalance. Aldosterone (a hormone) controls fluid retention by telling the kidneys to retain sodium & keep fluid in the body. If you experience PMS-H symptoms, its likely you have an increase in aldosterone levels in the late luteal phase. This can be due to excess oestrogen, lowered... progesterone or stress (or most likely, all of the above). In order to reduce these symptoms, you need key nutrients and herbs to help aid oestrogen clearance and progesterone production, support the communication between the brain and the ovaries and reduce cortisol secretion. While booking a consultation is probs your best bet to balance your hormones (especially when it comes to herbal medicine), some tips include: Reduce your sodium intake (including those found in processed & packaged foods and soft drinks) Consume plenty of fibre to assist with oestrogen excretion (if youre not clearing your bowels daily, you may be recycling unopposed oestrogen) Include plenty of your Brassica veggies daily (e.g. cabbage, Brussel sprouts, cauliower, broccoli) to help conjugate and excrete oestrogen Supplement with magnesium and B6 (which has been found to reduce fluid retention) What have you tried to help manage your symptoms? . . . . #PMS #fluidretention #bloated #PMSbloating #pmsproblems #menstrualcycle #regulatehormones #periodpain #PCOSproblems #hormonal #hormonehealth #balancinghormones #femalehealth #womenshealth #estrogendominance #progesteronedeficiency #oestrogenclearance #progesterone #anxietysupport #lowmood #weightgain #sleepsupport #womenshairloss #fatigue #womenshealthmatters #naturopathicmedicine #sutherlandshirenaturopath See more
23.01.2022 There is a lot of misconception of what the oral contraceptive pill actually does. I have found a lot of women are quite shocked when they realise that the OCP shuts down ovulation and switches off our own natural hormone production. While many women are put on the OCP to help regulate their period, it doesnt quite have that mechanism of action. Sure, its a handy, but bandaid solution for many issues, such as missing periods, period pain, PCOS, endometriosis, acne etc., b...ut this only works for as long as you take the pill. Once you come off it, all those issues usually return. I also want to point out that while the pill forces you to have a bleed, this is not a real period bleed. As we know, a normal menstrual bleed is the result of a series of hormonal events, including ovulation and the production of progesterone. If you have a bleed when youre on the pill, this is obviously not the result of the cycling of your own hormones (because they have been replaced with synthetic ones). So basically, the regulated bleed you have when on the OCP is more like a withdrawal bleed from the synthetic drugs (which stimulate the uterine lining). I am not trying to persuade or force anyone here to come off the pill - I simply want to educate women on what the pill actually does so you can all make a more informed decision on what is best for you. There are other options to contraception if this is the main reason you are using the OCP so get in touch if you would like to discuss this topic more. . . . #thepill #theocp #oralcontraceptivepill #OCP #hormonehealth #womenshealth #womenschoice #regulatehormones #balancehormones #acne #postpillacne #PMS #mood #depression #anxiety #PCOS #endometriosis #absentperiods #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathy #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalmedicine #nutritionalmedicine #lifestylechoices #wellbeing #nutrition #holistichealth #sutherlandshirenaturopath #asklaura See more
22.01.2022 You are probably aware that exposure to blue lights (from our phones, computers, etc.) can delay the release of melatonin (our sleep hormone), which can shift our ability to fall asleep. But have you ever noticed your skin looks a little worse for wear after being in front of the computer screen for long periods of time? Could blue light be affecting our skin as well? . . . Researchers are suggesting that unfortunately, yes, blue light may be contributing to photo-ageing, hyp...erpigmentation and skin laxity. There is some evidence to suggest that blue light penetrates the skin and can lead to an increase in reactive oxygen species, resulting in DNA damage, inflammation and the breakdown of healthy collagen. . . . While more research needs to be done in this field before any conclusions are solidified, its always best take preventative measures. In this instance, ensure you include antioxidant rich serums in your skincare routine to reduce to effects of free radicals, try to reduce your screen time at night (especially before going to bed), and reduce the brightness of you screen where possible. . . . 22.01.2022 Self-care Sunday is upon us again and I want to tell you a little about Epsom salts, which is a compound of magnesium and sulphate. Now that the days are colder, soaking in an epsom salt bath is one of my favourite things to do to de-stress and relieve muscle aches and pains. . . . We are facing times right now where people are probably feeling more stressed, overwhelmed and having issues with sleeping, so what I like most about this pract...ice is that it is an affordable, easy and time-efficient way to support the nervous and musculoskeletal system - its also a great excuse to have some "me-time". As our skin is able to absorb minerals quite easily, those who are magnesium deficient* will also benefit from soaking in an epsom salt bath. So what do you do? Add 1/2 to 1 cup of epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) to a warm bath. If youve got some essential oils, such as lavender, add them to a bit of bubble bath or some form of soap that will help to emulsify your oils before putting them directly into the water. Sit back for 15-30 minutes while reading, listening to music or a podcast, or simply lying in peaceful silence. Make sure you have a class of water nearby to keep hydrated. And if you dont have a bath, create a foot bath by following the same steps as above but use a large bowl of water instead. . . . *As magnesium is required for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, there are multiple deficiency symptoms; however, the most common ones are achy muscles, headaches, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, constipation, irregular heart beat, PMS and asthma. . . . #epsomsalts #magnesiumsalts #magnesiumsulfate #epsomsaltbath #magnesiumdeficiency #stressmanagement #destress #soremuscles #achesandpains #fatigue #headaches #migraines #naturalhealth #PMS #asthma #insomnia #sleepsupport #relax #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathy #lifestylechoices #wellbeing #holistichealth #sutherlandshirenaturopath #asklaura See more
21.01.2022 I was running late to work the other day, so decided to quickly make up a chia seed pudding to have once I got there. They are honestly so easy to make and really keep you feeling fuller for longer (I didnt even need a snack before lunch). This is because chia seeds are rich in fibre (a serving contains approximately 10g of fibre), which helps to slow down digestion and absorption while increasing fullness. Fibre also helps to feed the friendly bacteria in your gut so win wi...n. Chia seeds are a good plant source of omega-3 fatty acids (ALA), they are a complete protein and contain various minerals including calcium, magnesium, manganese and zinc. . . . Below is an easy, quick recipe. As chia seeds swell in liquid (which is where the benefits lie), they are ready to consume after about 20 minutes of setting. You can also store it in the fridge overnight and enjoy it the next day if youre better prepared. . . . Ingredients: 1/4 cup of chia seeds (black or white, doesnt matter) 1 cup of liquid (nut milks work well) 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. 1 teaspoon of maple syrup/honey/rice malt. 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon. You can top with whatever you desire e.g. berries, nut butters, coconut flakes etc. Method: Whisk all ingredients in a glass mason jar. Cover, shake, then refrigerate (overnight or take to work and leave for 20 minutes). The chia seeds should soak up the liquid and have the consistency of a pudding - if too dry, just add some more liquid. Give it a stir to break up any clumps of chia seeds. Add whatever toppings you want and enjoy chilled. . . . Side tip: as chia seeds do contain a lot of fibre, you must ensure you drink enough water throughout the day to reduce occurrence of bloating, flatulence and constipation. See more
20.01.2022 Do you struggle to resist cravings for foods that are high in sugar and fat? Are you often blaming your poor self-control and criticising yourself after indulging in such foods? There actually may be another possibility you may not have even considered - could your gut microbes be influencing your eating behaviour? . . . Naturopaths like to talk about the Gut-Brain axis as a bi-directional communication - which is why we often say the gut i...s the second brain. While we often look at how the brain affects the digestive system, the gut microbiome also impacts our mood and behaviour. A hypothesis has been stipulated that our gut microbes are able to change our neuropeptide signalling, which: Induces low mood until we satisfy it by increasing the intake of foods that basically increase their health, but at the expense of our health Release toxins, which alters our mood and increases poor eating patterns Reduce inhibitions and increase motivation to find unhealthy foods . . . Research has found that the more diverse our gut microbiota is, the more resistant it is to invasions by pathogenic species and the less likely our gut microbes will manipulate our behaviour (such as craving for food that help it survive). So how do we diversify our gut microbiome? By ensuring we are eating a variety of coloured and nutrient dense food, by changing up our diet and not eating the same damn thing every day and ensuring we include pre + probiotic rich foods. Our microbiome can change drastically within just 24 hours of simply changing up our diet. Are you struggling with cravings? Could it be related to your microbiome? . . . #microbiome #sugarcravings #cravings #guthealth #gutmicrobiome #obesity #weightloss #weightgain #metabolicsyndrome #diabetes #gutbrainaxis #mentalhealth #stress #anxiety #prebiotics #probiotics #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathy #nutritionist #herbalmedicine #nutritionalmedicine #healthydiet #nutrition #holistichealth #sutherlandshirenaturopath #asklaura See more
20.01.2022 Now that the colder months are upon us, I thought Id focus on a herb that helps with colds and flus for this weeks Wednesday Weeds. Inula helenium, otherwise known as Elecampane, has been used traditionally for the treatment of respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, whooping cough, disorders of digestion, urinary infections, and skin conditions. . . . Elecampane is a warming and stimulating herb that basically gets stuff moving and expels it out (like mucous tha...t is stuck deep in the lungs). As it has antimicrobial actions, it is specific to bronchial infections and clearing the lower respiratory system whilst also restoring and improving function. Although it is mainly used for congestion in the lungs, it can also be useful for mucous that is stuck in the sinuses or to help reduce that pesky post-nasal drip. As this time of year also brings on those persistent coughs that dont seem to go away, Elecampane also soothes the tissue irritation and inflammation that results from constant coughing, which is why it is such a beautiful herb for the respiratory system. . . . Elecampane is also used to support digestive function as it was traditionally indicated for intestinal parasites, stagnant digestion and to balance intestinal flora. According to a preclinical study, it may have some benefit in atopic dermatitis due to its anti-inflammatory action and its ability to regulate cytokine expression (all involved in the pathogenesis of this skin condition). . . . As herbs have some safety concerns in certain individuals, it is always important to talk to a qualified naturopath or herbalist before taking these medicines. If youre predisposed to lung congestion or need some help to support your respiratory system before the winter sets in, give me a holla. See more

19.01.2022 Do you notice that your sugar/carb cravings increase throughout your menstrual cycle? In fact, it is normal to feel hungrier during this time due to a couple of reasons: First, oestrogen and serotonin act as an appetite suppressor, and they usually drop before menstruation. Secondly, progesterone is usually high before the onset of your cycle, which is an appetite stimulant.... So why is it that you crave anything with a sweet taste? It could be because sugar makes us momentarily happy in a time we may be feeling low or anxious, but it is more likely due to an imbalance in our hormones and issues with insulin sensitivity. If you overindulge on high sugar foods leading up to your period, it will only worsen your PMS symptoms and create even more inflammation. So what can you do? If youre hungrier during this time, just eat more of your nutrient dense meals (have a second serving if you need it) Have protein with every meal as this will make you feel fuller, which will make you less likely to crave sugar Ensure youre getting enough sleep each night, as our appetite hormones are regulated with adequate sleep Ditch the caffeine and alcohol leading up to your cycle Certain nutrients are required for blood sugar control, such as chromium, magnesium, zinc and B vitamins Herbs! See a naturopath who can create an individualised herbal tonic to help balance your hormones and improve insulin sensitivity if required. 19.01.2022 The skin is the largest organ in the body and is responsible for 1/4 of the bodys elimination capacity - in other words, it plays a huge role in getting rid of wastes and impurities from the body. Healthy skin eliminates half a kilo of waste products daily, so if circulation to the skin is reduced, pores become clogged with dead skin cells and toxins become trapped in the body. If the skin cant detoxify effectively, this puts added pressure on our other eliminative organs, ...such as kidneys, liver, lungs and bowels. While our circulatory system has its own pump to move blood through the body (ie. the heart), our lymphatic system relies on skeletal muscle and physical activity to get it moving. So if youre not moving daily, then its likely your lymphatic system may be a little congested and consequently, your skin is also. Dry body brushing is a great technique to help move stagnant lymph, improving the surface circulation of the skin and encouraging the body to discharge metabolic wastes. Daily brushing helps to open up the pores of the skin and increase cell renewal, aids in eliminating dead skin cells, toxins and wastes and increases blood supply to the area, ultimately bringing more nourishment and oxygen. So how do you dry body brush? Get yourself a good quality, natural bristle skin brush (go for something with a softer bristle) and follow these steps before hopping in the shower: 1. Brush underneath and on top of feet 2. Brush up each leg from ankle to hip 3. Brush upward over butt and up the back 4. Brush abdomen in a clock-wise direction 5. Brush palms and tops of hands 6. Brush up each arm, wrist to shoulder, and shoulder towards heart 7. Take a nice warm shower 8. End the warm shower with a cold rinse to provide the skin with further circulatory benefits Use long, brisk (but gentle) movements and avoid brushing the face, sensitive areas or broken skin. 17.01.2022 If you've never experienced some form of premenstrual syndrome, you're definitely in the minority these days. Most of the women I see in clinic will have varying degrees of PMS, which is normally seen during the luteal phase of the cycle (leading up to the onset of the bleed). There are typically 4 different categories: > PMS-A (anxiety) > PMS-D (depression) > PMS-C (craving) > PMS-H (hyper-hydration)... You may not fit perfectly into one of these categories and a certain amount of overlap is expected. Understanding your cycle and observing when you experience these symptoms is important when it comes to naturopathic treatment. How many symptoms are you ticking off right now? 15.01.2022 Is anyone else noticing their skin is a little bit dryer at the moment? I personally blame the coming of winter. So for this weeks Wednesday Weeds, Ive chosen sea buckthorn, otherwise known as Hippophaes rhamnoides. Now you may have heard of omega-3 and omega-6, but did you know that sea buckthorn contains the highest concentrations of palmitoleic acid, or omega-7? This monounsaturated fat plays an important role in regulating moisture in the skin, reducing skin sensitivity,... providing key building blocks for skin regeneration and improving skin elasticity. . . . Sea buckthorn contains approximately 190 bioactive substances including various vitamins such as A, C and E, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids and carotenoids. It can be used topically and internally to support healthy skin by: Enhancing collagen production and skin elasticity Strengthening the lipid barrier of the epidermis Protecting against transepidermal water loss Reducing oxidative damage and repairing sun-damaged skin Protecting against environmental toxins Supporting ageing skin cells and inhibiting the ageing process . . . But what does the research say? In one study, a highly significant increase in water hydration, overall skin elasticity and reduced roughness in skin texture was recorded in women over 60 who took sea buckthorn supplementation for 3 months. In another study, sea buckthorn increased palmitoleic acid in the plasma lipids of people with atopic dermatitis, which resulted in a significant improvement in skin health. While sea buckthorn is useful for acne/congested skin, it appears to be especially beneficial for dry and dehydrated skin. . . . Ill just mention that sea buckthorn has also shown to support healthy weight, has positive effects on cholesterol, protects the cardiovascular system and has a clinical application for urinary tract inflammation, vaginal inflammatory atrophy, sinus inflammation and dry eyes. Does anyone need some skin support this coming winter? See more

14.01.2022 Leading up to your period, do you feel more emotional or irritable? Does the sound of people breathing annoy you? Do you sleep terribly? PMS-A would be the most common category women present with in clinic, so youre not alone (I know I have ticked a few of these boxes in the past). So why do you cry in a TV ad or want to kill your partner for eating too loudly? We can blame too much oestrogen or a lack of progesterone for this one. Since progesterone is yo...ur calm the f*ck down hormone, insufficient levels can lead to these mood changes. The only way to make progesterone is to ovulate every single month. If youre not, nutritional and herbal medicines can help support progesterone production by rebuilding the communication between the brain and the ovaries (known as the HPO-axis). Unfortunately, if youre on hormonal contraceptives, you are not ovulating or producing natural progesterone. Some other tips to reduce PMS-A symptoms include: Avoid caffeine Include tryptophan foods such as turkey, bananas, legumes, pumpkin and sesame seeds which has shown to reduce irritability and aggression Drink teas such as chamomile, passionflower, withania and lavender to reduce anxiety Practice yoga (shown to reduce anxiety and improve PMS symptoms) Supplement with cofactors to support GABA production (calming neurotransmitter) such as B6 and zinc How do you manage your symptoms? 14.01.2022 You may be thinking - do I really need to double cleanse? And what even is it? Well, its exactly what it sounds like - you cleanse your face twice. So how does it work and when should you do it.. . . . First rule, only double cleanse at night as its unnecessary to cleanse in the morning as this just strips away our own natural oils causing dehydration. But in the evening, use an oil-based cleanser, which helps to remove excess oil (oil attracts oil), dissolves make-up and d...ebris in the upper layer of the skin. Then, cleanse with a water/gel based cleanser to thoroughly remove any excess residue, prevent build-up in the pores and allow for more effective application of serums, moisturisers, etc. . . . Even if you dont wear makeup, its still important to thoroughly cleanse your face each night as daily exposure to environmental pollutants, dust and sweat can still contribute to congestion and dehydration. And please never sleep in your makeup. The skin needs this time to drink up the serums and eye creams youve applied before going to bed (I hope) and if youre still wearing make-up, the skin can become congested leading to blackheads and blemishes. If you have a bad habit of going to bed without washing your face properly, youre more likely to develop dry skin, fine lines and a dull dehydrated appearance (eek). . . . So do you fall asleep before hitting the sink? Is it time you break the cycle and start double-cleansing? . . . #doublecleansing #nighttimeroutine #oilcleanser #creamcleanser #skinroutine #healthyskin #skinjournal #skintips #healthyskintips #acne #dryskin #wrinkles #antiageing #prematureageing #dehydratedskin #skintypes #oilyskin #acneprone #blemishes #congestion #congestedskin #naturalhealing #holistichealth #naturalskincare #naturopath #asklaura See more
13.01.2022 Although called a vitamin, vitamin D is actually a hormone - it is different from all the other nutrients in that the body can synthesise it, with the help of sunlight, from a precursor that the body makes from cholesterol. While we probably know that vitamin D plays a huge role in bone health, it also has really important functions with cells of the innate and adaptive immune system. . . . It is estimated that about 1 billion people world...wide have a vitamin D deficiency. Epidemiological studies have suggested a role for low vitamin D status in the risk of developing both viral and bacterial infections. A systematic review in 2017 showed that vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of acute respiratory infections, especially in those with extremely low baseline levels. Additionally, people with asthma, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease and cystic fibrosis (CF) show correlations between severity and level of vitamin D deficiency. . . . So how does it work? Vitamin D enhances the immune systems response to viral and bacterial agents by promoting differentiation and activity of macrophages (a cell responsible for engulfing and destroying pathogens). Vitamin D also modulates the release of cytokines, indicating its role in reducing prolonged exposure to local and systemic inflammation. . . . I think it is really important to check that your vitamin D levels are optimal - low vitamin D or even sub-optimal levels are associated with poor immune function, autoimmune diseases, depression, osteoporosis, Crohns disease, thyroid dysfunction, eczema and other skin conditions. Correct dosages are really important (if youre really low, the usual recommended dose may not be enough for you), so ensure you speak to a qualified practitioner before self-prescribing. See more
12.01.2022 These are legit the best cookies Ive made. They are chewy and chocolatey and even my family enjoy them. Plus they are gluten and dairy free so bit of a win there. Recipe is from @kalejunkie Ingredients: 1 cup almond flour (I used hazelnut meal as I have a slight almond intolerance) 1 cup tahini ... 1/2 cup maple syrup or rice-malt syrup 1 egg 1 tsp baking soda 1 heaping cup of dark chocolate chips 1 scoop collagen peptides - not entirely necessary but a good addition anyway Sea salt flakes for topping Method Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a medium size bowl, mix together the flour, tahini, syrup, collagen peptides, and chocolate chips! *The dough should be thick. If its not, add a little bit more flour* Mix to ensure everything is coated well, and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Do not skip this step as its the most important! While the dough is chilling, preheat oven to 180 degrees. Remove bowl from the refrigerator, and add the egg and baking soda. Mix together until fully incorporated. Using a spoon, scoop dough and form cookies (makes around 12-14ish) Bake for 10-11 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the cookies settle before eating! Sprinkle with sea salt and enjoy! The key with these cookies is to slightly undercook them, so that they are nice and crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Brb. 12.01.2022 Im sure youve all heard of apple cider vinegar (ACV), and maybe youre already using it without knowing exactly why. There are various claims regarding the benefits of ACV, but we should probably look at the evidence before taking a swig. . . . In a small study, participants received either ACV or a placebo after eating a meal composed of a bagel, orange juice and butter (weird combo). Those who received the ACV had significantly lower bl...ood glucose levels, supporting the claims that ACV has anti-glycaemic actions. While it may not cure diabetes, it is a good preventative measure and can be used alongside other treatments. . . . ACV may also help with weight loss. In one study, participants who drank 15mL of ACV with lunch and dinner lost more weight after 12 weeks than those who did not receive the treatment. This may be due to the fact that ACV improves satiety and reduces the need to overeat. . . . ACV is also a great digestive aid. Contrary to popular belief, most people have too little acid in their stomach, which makes it mighty difficult to break down and absorb food. Having 1 tablespoon of ACV in a glass of warm water before meals is an easy way to improve digestion. . . . But beware. ACV is highly acidic so always dilute it in water as the pure stuff can damage your enamel. If ACV causes severe bloating or stomach pain, talk to your practitioner as there may be some underlying digestive issues going on. . . . #ACV #applecider #appleciderbenefits #ACV #themother #digestivehealth #bloating #lowstomachacid #reflux #weightloss #refluxsupport #bloodglucose #bloodsugar #diabetesmanagement #diabetessupport #bloodsugarissues #PCOS #PCOSawareness #PCOSsupport #insulinresistance #insulinsensitivity #loweringglucose #naturalremedies #naturopathicmedicine @asklaura @sutherlandshirenaturopath See more
12.01.2022 As the colder months approach, cinnamon is a perfect herb to use for this weeks Wednesday Weeds. or , is more than just a spice - it has clinical efficacy for: > Nausea, diarrhoea and dyspepsia > Diabetes (including gestational) > Poor glucose regulation... > Obesity and metabolic syndrome > High cholesterol and high blood pressure > PCOS > Bacterial, viral and fungal infections A systematic review reported that cinnamon significantly decreased levels of fasting plasma glucose and total cholesterol levels in 10 different randomised control trials, indicating its use in diabetes. A water extract of cinnamon has also shown to reduce body fat and increase lean body mass in 22 patients with pre-diabetes and metabolic syndrome. If youre suffering from PCOS, cinnamon might also be indicated for you. A randomised trial found oral supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in fasting glucose as well as insulin resistance in women with PCOS. If youve got a sweet tooth, cinnamon may be able to help curb those cravings due to its affects on insulin sensitivity. While higher doses are usually warranted in disease states, why not try adding cinnamon to cooking (like in porridge, pancakes or smoothies) or simply enjoy a warm cup of cinnamon tea! Just make sure you buy the true cinnamon ( or ) as there are some cinnamons (such as ) that do not have the same blood stabilising effects. . . . #wednesdayweeds #cinnamon #truecinnamon #cinnamontea #bloodsugar #glucoselevels #prediabetes #diabetessupport #bloodglucose #insulinresistance #PCOS #insulinsensitivity #weightloss #hypertension #herbalteas #foodasmedicine #sugarcravings #healthycholesterol #weightmanagement #weightlossjourney #womenshealth #healthyhormones #hormonebalance #PCOSsupport #naturalhealing #sutherlandshirenaturopath See more
11.01.2022 This week, I give you , commonly known as Beth root. This herb has been used traditionally by various native North American Indian tribes as a womans herb to aid childbirth, along with treating irregular periods, period pains and excessive vaginal discharge. It is used today in late pregnancy to facilitate labour and delivery (hence its other common name birth root), and due to its anti-haemorrhagic actions, is used in any situation where abnormal bleeding i...s a feature of gynaecological complaints. . . . It is particularly beneficial in treating: Dysfunctional uterine bleeding Uterine haemorrhages following childbirth Dysmenorrhoea and other painful conditions Menorrhagia (abnormally heavy or prolonged menstruation) Metrorrhagia (bleeding from the uterus) Blood loss via the urinary tract . . . Beth root contains hormone-like steroidal saponins that seem to be capable of interacting with receptor sites for hormones in the hypothalamic-pituitary unit, which may explain its ability to regulate hormones and blood flow. It is specific to the treatment of uterine bleeding that is caused by failure to ovulate and can regulate both cycle length and menstrual loss. It has also been used in cough and cold syrups and can be topically applied for varicose veins and ulcers, haematomas and haemorrhoid bleeding. Due to the benefits of this herb, increased demand has led to over-harvesting and Beth root is now threatened in the wild. While it is still available, it should only be used in extreme conditions and can be substituted by other herbs, such as (ladys mantle) or - (shepherds purse). . . . #bethroot #childbirth #labour #preparingforbirth #birthing #heavyperiods #bloodloss #menorrhagia #uterinebleeding #haemorrhage #wednesdayweeds #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathy #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalmedicine #nutritionalmedicine #nutrition #holistichealth #sutherlandshirenaturopath #asklaura See more
11.01.2022 I love including a morning coffee as part of my routine as it allows me to have some quiet time to myself. Having moments where we slow down and allow space to ourselves is so important for our wellbeing. Stress has such a massive impact on basically every function in the body, so ensuring you create some time to yourself to breathe, think and process is so vital. This weekend, just stop for a moment. Take in your surroundings, savour the space youre in and just be. . . . #coffeetime #morningcoffee #morningritual #timetomyself #relaxationtechniques #mindfulness #beinginthemoment #livinginthemoment #relaxation #stressrelief #stressreduction #stressmanagement #anxietyprone #destress #quiettime
11.01.2022 There has been a lot of hype recently about the effects of collagen and it has been popping up in everything - from health bars to powders to capsules. But is it really beneficial or just an expensive edible hoax? . . . First, lets look at what collagen is. Collagen is a long-chain amino acid synthesised from glycine, proline & hydroxyproline and is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is one of the building blocks for all conn...ective tissues (bones, skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments) and without sufficient amounts, these tissues can become compromised over-time, leading to accelerated ageing and degeneration. . . . But where do we get it from? If youre having protein rich foods (animal products, nuts, legumes) the body is able to use the amino acids found in these foods to synthesis collagen. However, this synthesis also requires iron and vitamin C, so if your diet is lacking in vitamins and minerals, your collagen production may be impaired. As we get older, we break down collagen quicker than we can replace it, which is why supplementation may be necessary. . . . So what do the studies tell us? In one study, a statistically significant improvement in skin elasticity was observed in women aged between 35-55 years taking 2.5 or 5g of collagen hydrolysate for 4 weeks. In another study, a statistically significant reduction in eye wrinkle volume was seen in 57 patients after 4 and 8 weeks of supplementing with a specific type of collagen. Clinical trials have also shown a significant reduction in joint pain in the upper limbs and lumbar spine after patients ingested 1,200mg of collagen per day for 6 months. . . . Personally, I prefer collagen powders as they offer a higher dose and are more easily absorbed. Plus, collagen powder is tasteless so it can be added to literally anything (smoothies, hot drinks, soups, plain water etc.). . . . Have you taken collagen powder before? Are you interested in trying it? See more
11.01.2022 Im fairly confident we all know that drinking H20 is pretty important to you know, survive. However, I often hear patients say Im probably not having enough water. Most people seem to understand we should aim for the 2 litre mark per day, but for some reason, we dont prioritise this basic step for good health. Without water, you wouldnt last very long because it is obviously so vital for so many body processes, such as breathing, digestion, cellular metabolism, and deto...xification. . . . While severe dehydration causes damage to our organs and basically shuts them down, even if youre slightly dehydrated, you can still experience various symptoms such as: Headaches, migraines and dizziness Constipation Low energy and fatigue Allergies Dry and dehydrated skin Urinary tract infections Muscle aches and pains Low or high blood pressure . . . As a naturopath, our approach to illness focuses on restoring health by basically adhering to a few simple techniques to encourage the bodys innate self-healing process. Ensuring you are drinking enough water is such an essential step that is often so overlooked when it comes to disease development. . . . So let this be a reminder for you to drink some bloody water. If you want to make it more fancy or you purely dont like the taste, add some orange or lemon peel to your bottle and sip throughout the day, or include plenty of herbal teas to up your intake. I challenge you to have at least 2L of water every day from now on and notice how you feel with this small change. . . . #H20 #waterintake #dehydration #waterforhealth #waterchallenge #fatigue #chronicfatigue #poorenergy #headaches #dryskin #dehyratedskin #skinhealth #naturalskinhealth #urinarytractinfections #UTI #UTIprevention #bloodpressure #lowbloodpressure #hearthealth #prevention #diseaseprevention #naturaltreatments #naturalhealth #naturalmedicine #lifestylechoices #wellbeing #sutherlandshirenaturopath #asklaura See more
10.01.2022 One of the things I miss most about isolation, is being able to go out dancing with my mates. Ive always been more of an introvert, but dancing really brings out the extrovert in me and I always have such a bloody good time when Im on the D floor. And while I simply love it because I have so much fun, there are heaps of health benefits to dancing, which you may (or may not) find interesting. . . . There have actually been legit studies d...one on the effects of dance movement therapy (DMT - honestly, where do I sign up). In one study, after 12 weeks of DMT, serotonin levels increased in adolescents with mild depression, suggesting dancing may stabilise the sympathetic nervous system (our "fight, flight or freeze response) and improve psychological distress. A review also found that ballroom dancing three times a week can improve balance and reduces the risk of dangerous falls in the elderly. In another study, regular dancing was associated with a reduction in dementia risk due to the mental effort and social interaction that dance involves. Interestingly enough, other types of physical activity e.g. cycling, golf, swimming and tennis, did not have the same reduction rate. Side benefit, dancing also offers people an opportunity for greater social engagement, contributing to healthy ageing. . . . I know that going out dancing will be on the top of my list whenever this isolation is lifted - whos with me? 08.01.2022 This week is National Pain Week in Australia (27th July - 2nd August). Most of us have experienced some form of pain in our lives, which has probably gone away once we have treatment or an injury heals. However, about 1 in 3 Australians are living with chronic pain every single day. . . . People experiencing chronic pain often feel misunderstood, stigmatised, or not taken seriously by professionals as their condition is somewhat invisible ...and they may not meet "health expectations." This is where a holistic approach is warranted when it comes to pain management, such as manual and physical therapies, pharmaceutical management, surgical interventions, psychology, physical therapy and of course, dietary, nutritional and naturopathic medicine. . . . The types of conditions featuring chronic pain I mainly see in clinic include: + Endometriosis or painful periods + Migraines / headaches + Fibromyalgia + Joint pain due to other conditions such as Hashimotos + IBS/IBD As each condition requires different treatment and each individual presents with varying symptoms, theres never a one-size-fits-all approach. Are you are suffering with chronic and debilitating pain? What strategies do you find most effective? . . . . . #chronicpain #nationalpainweek #painfulperiods #femalereproductivehealth #femalehealth #womenshealth #periodhealth #painfree #endometriosis #thyroidbalance #hormonebalance #hashimotos #thyroiditis #hypothyroid #thyroidhealing #thyroidhealth #fatigue #chronicfatigue #fibromyalgia #migraines #migrainefree #PMS #periodpain #naturalhealing #sutherlandshirenaturopath #asklaura See more
06.01.2022 Another week, another weed. Ive chosen one of my favourite herbs for skin health and nervous system support, , commonly known as Gotu kola. If stress causes your skin to flare up, or youve got poor healing wounds, or issues with varicose veins or suffering with anxiety and stress-related memory loss, Gotu kola may be for you. . . . Numerous studies support the traditional uses of Gotu kola to promote wound healing, conne...ctive tissue regeneration and prevent the formation of keloid scar tissue. Topical use of Gotu kola has been investigated for psoriasis, wounds, wrinkles, sun-damage skin and stretch marks with positive results. There is also evidence from clinical trials that this herb has regenerative effects on the vein walls (think varicose veins) by enhancing microcirculation and decreasing fluid retention. . . . Gotu kola has been documented in the treatment of various neurological disorders including ageing and cognitive decline. A human clinical trial found that higher doses of this herb enhanced working memory, reaction time and improved mood in 28 elderly participants receiving treatment. . . . Research suggests Gotu kola may function as an anxiolytic through its ability to increase brain levels of serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline, while reducing corticosterone. The findings of a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised trial suggested Gotu kola reduced the acoustic startle response in 40 adults (if you get startled easily by unexpected stimuli such as loud noises etc.). Another trial found that 9g of dried herb significantly improved anxiety, stress and depression at day 30 and 60 in patients with generalised anxiety disorder. Its use as a neurogenerative and neurotrophorestorative adaptogen makes it particularly useful in the treatment of stress disorders. See more
06.01.2022 Ive taken a pretty long break from social media. Mainly because so much has been going on in the world and I didnt know how/when a good time was to jump back on, but I also wanted to take the time to myself away from feeling the pressure to post stuff (which comes from no-one but myself - Im working on it). . . . Anyway, this is just a quick reminder that Im still alive and working on providing you with some good health related shit. 05.01.2022 Anyone who is suffering from back acne is probably glad its finally winter where strapless tops and backless dresses are no longer needed. Back acne is not only painful and annoying, it can also really impact your self-esteem and confidence. Luckily, the location of your acne can often tell us a few things that are going on inside the body that we need to address. Hormonal acne generally affects the jawline, neck, back and shoulders and can sometimes leave... you with scarring. When there is an imbalance in hormones or poor hormone metabolism and excretion, an excess in these hormones can put pressure on the liver. This excess often puts an added load on the skin, resulting in deep, cystic acne. Acne on the back also suggests inefficient detoxification, often due to diets high in sugar, processed foods and refined carbohydrates. Back acne often indicates reduced elimination capacity and a need to support our own detoxification processes. Some simple tips to help reduce your back acne include: > Reduce sugar and try a low GI diet > Swap refined carbohydrates to complex carbs > Ensure youre getting plenty of fibre (helps to excrete hormones through the bowels) > Increase omega-3 in the diet (anti-inflammatory action) > Try body brushing to help move the lymphatic system > Shower after exercise to remove excess sweat and bacteria > Dont leave your gym clothes on all day Herbal and nutritional medicine can also really benefit stubborn skin conditions. If youre struggling with reducing your outbreaks and would like to gain back your confidence, consider booking in for a naturopathic consultation. . . . #backacne #healingacne #hormoneacne #hormoneimbalance #detoxification #liverhealth #guthealth #detox #detoxprogram #healingacne #naturalhealing #acneproblems #quitsugar #iquitsugar #lowGIdiet #healthyfoodchoices #lymphaticdrainage #bodybrushing #drybrushing #naturalhealth #happyhormones #androgenexcess #androgens #highfibrediet See more
04.01.2022 "Race and racism is a reality that so many of us grow up learning to just deal with. But if we ever hope to move past it, it cant just be on people of colour to deal with it. Its up to all of us - Black, white, everyone - no matter how well-meaning we think we might be, to do the honest, uncomfortable work of rooting it out. It starts with self-examination and listening to those whose lives are different from our own. It ends with justice, compassion, and empathy that manifests in our lives and on our streets. I pray we all have the strength for that journey, just as I pray for the souls and the families of those who were taken from us." - Michelle Obama. #justice #listening #learning #equality #whiteprivilege #iseeyou #inequality #aboriginallivesmatter #BLM #diversity
03.01.2022 If youve never experienced some form of premenstrual syndrome, youre definitely in the minority these days. Do you want to understand why you experience these symptoms? 03.01.2022 Can you tell your period is coming because you're bloated, or your boobs jumped a size, or your nipples hurt to the touch? If you answered yes, it may be due a common hormonal imbalance. Aldosterone (a hormone) controls fluid retention by telling the kidneys to retain sodium & keep fluid in the body. If you experience PMS-H symptoms, it's likely you have an increase in aldosterone levels in the late luteal phase. While booking a consultation is probs your best bet to balance your hormones (especially when it comes to herbal medicine), some tips include: Reduce your sodium intake (including those found in processed & packaged foods and soft drinks) Consume plenty of fibre to assist with oestrogen excretion (if you're not clearing your bowels daily, you may be recycling unopposed oestrogen) Include plenty of your Brassica veggies daily (e.g. cabbage, Brussel sprouts, cauliower, broccoli) to help conjugate and excrete oestrogen Supplement with magnesium and B6 (which has been found to reduce fluid retention) What have you tried to help manage your symptoms? . . . . #PMS #fluidretention #bloated #PMSbloating #pmsproblems #menstrualcycle #regulatehormones #periodpain #PCOSproblems #hormonal #hormonehealth #balancinghormones #femalehealth #womenshealth #estrogendominance #progesteronedeficiency #oestrogenclearance #progesterone #anxietysupport #lowmood #weightgain #sleepsupport #womenshairloss #fatigue #womenshealthmatters #naturopathicmedicine #sutherlandshirenaturopath See more
03.01.2022 Many women respond to hormonal fluctuations throughout their menstrual cycle with depressive symptoms, such as withdrawal and fatigue. While oestrogen usually gets a bad rap, in this case, declining levels are actually associated with low mood. But how can oestrogen influence how we feel? Oestrogen helps to stop the breakdown of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that modulates mood, cognition, reward and a whole bunch of other processes. So if oestrogen starts ...to decline too rapidly in the luteal phase, serotonin will also start to breakdown = depressed mood. Herbal + nutritional medicine work wonders here as they help to rebuild the communication between hormones and the brain. However, some other tips to help modulate oestrogen include: Ensure you are having enough calories through the day - low oestrogen can sometimes be due to under-eating Try to reduce excessive amounts of exercise (over-exercising can lead to diminished ovarian reserve) Stress has a big impact on hormonal communication so make the time to do activities that reduce your stress levels (yoga, meditation, reading, craft, music) Include linseeds/flaxseeds into your diet, which help to modulate oestrogen Consider B6 and magnesium, which help to modulate serotonin levels (form and dosages matter so get some advice before you supplement) . . . . #PMSdepression #premenstrualdepression #moodchanges #hormonalbalance #healthyhormones #PMS #PMSissues #PMSrelief #womenshealth #balancinghormones #PMDD #naturalsupport #womenshealthmatters #serotonin #healthymood #serotonindeficiency #supportingwomen #womenschoice #periodproblems #periodsolutions #naturalsolutions #asklaura #sutherlandshirenaturopath See more
01.01.2022 Have you come across a condition called pyrrole disorder, pyroluria or pyrroles but are unsure of what it is? Ill start by saying that pyrrole is a natural molecule produced by the body and everyone has varying levels at any given time. However, due to a potential genetic variation or a lot of oxidative stress, some people produce more pyrroles. While this molecule isnt really much of an issue, problems tend to arise with high levels of circulating pyrroles as they binds up... and excrete essential nutrients, namely zinc and B6. . . . So why is this a problem? B6 and zinc are critical for digestion, immune function, cognition and emotional regulation. Both of these nutrients are required for healthy GABA production - if your excreting higher levels of zinc and B6 than you can retain due to disordered pyrrole metabolism, youre at a greater risk of low mood, depression, anxiety, poor stress adaption and potentially long-term cognitive decline. . . . While there are a large number of symptoms associated with this condition, they can include: * Poor dream recall * Mid-morning nausea and poor appetite * Digestive issues (constipation, diarrhoea) * Allergies and immune dysregulation * Anxiety, depression, mood swings, aggression, ADHD * Sensitivity to noise and lights * Skin issues and joint complaints . . . Speaking from personal experience and having a history of high pyrroles, I can tell when I need to up my B6 and zinc. Due to my genetic makeup, I am more predisposed to anxiety and depression so I need to support my body with specific nutrients and manage stress through lifestyle interventions. Is this something you can relate to? Do you want to understand why you feel the way you do? See more
