25.01.2022 A great read if you're a lover of herbal teas like I am! I regularly treat using therapeutic teas and have full faith in their ability to act on a wide range of health concerns. http://www.medicaldaily.com/peppermint-tea-cognitive-abilit

25.01.2022 Not too long ago, a gorgeous friend messaged me and asked if I would do her a favour by taking an oversupply of cauliflower off her hands. I was only too happy to oblige. Cauliflower has to be one of the most versatile veggies out there. You can roast or steam it. You can eat it cooked or raw. Heck, you can even freeze it and add it to smoothies. For this salad, I combined a few different textures and flavours. I think this recipe will have you heading out to secure an oversupply of cauliflower and you won’t need me to take it off your hands. Head to @peninsulaherbaldispensary for the recipe! #dinner #cauliflower #meatfree #vegetarian #plantbased

23.01.2022 It's a miserable old day here in Melbourne, which means it's perfect for getting a pot of soup underway to see you through the weekend. This was the first recipe I posted, (almost a year ago!), and it is definitely on my 'to-do' list for this weekend... Enjoy! https://www.lauragale.com.au//05/14/Recipe-Hearty-bean-soup

22.01.2022 I routinely prescribe therapeutic teas to patients as I absolutely believe in their value to nourish, heal and comfort. I love tea SO much that, with the help of a fellow tea-loving close friend, I've decided to launch a range of hand-blended teas for a variety of uses. Please head over and 'like' us to stay up to date with news, new blends and general tea-related adventures!

21.01.2022 Most people can recognise some level of interaction between their brains and guts: butterfly's in the tummy when you're nervous; stomach 'dropping' when you're sad or disappointed; tightening of the tummy with anxiety...This is a fabulous, recent article that talks about improving mental health through diet, using foods that recognise the connection between the brain, and the gut. http://www.abc.net.au//brain-food-eating-to-manage/8529900

21.01.2022 Naturopath Laura could not have explained this Naturopathic Principal number 4 any better. "For me, educating patients is at the core of my role as a naturopat...h. 19.01.2022 I would go so far as to say that every single treatment plan I devise has an element of stress management. I cannot overstate the importance of managing stress and the way that it can impact on health. This article is an easy, informative read for your Friday morning.

19.01.2022 In 2016, Statin medications took up 2 of the top 3 spots for the most frequently prescribed medications in Australia; chances are you, or someone you know, is currently taking one. Today on the blog, learn more about what your blood test actually means and what you can do about lowering cholesterol and protecting your heart, beyond your prescription medication. https://www.lauragale.com.au//17/Do-you-have-high-choleste

19.01.2022 An interesting read! I love dogs - not only are they great for our mental and physical health, now they might be helping improve gut health too! Give your furry friend an extra cuddle today

19.01.2022 Last week I attended a seminar all about preconception planning (all the things we can do to promote healthy conception), healthy pregnancies and, of course, happy and healthy mums, dads and bubs at the other end. We have so many opportunities and SO much potential to make a BIG difference. My fave 5 key messages: STRESS, both from the male and female hope-to-be or expecting parents can lead to lasting genetic changes not only in their children, but also in their children...’s children. BRAIN VOLUME increases 260% in the final trimester of pregnancy...260%!!! This is a crucial time to make sure pregnant women are meeting nutrient requirements for all the brain-building good stuff. We all know how important folate is, but have you heard about CHOLINE? It supports brain growth and function, genetic programming, and reduces the risk of neural tube defects in bubs AND reduces the risk of preeclampsia in mum. What’s scary is that only about HALF of pregnant/breastfeeding women are getting an adequate amount. MEN play a far larger role in conception and a healthy pregnancy beyond their, er, deposit. 50% of miscarriages (that’s HALF, fellas) are associated with sperm quality. Mum-to-be’s MICROBIOME starts to effect the health of bubs even before birth. Allergies, asthma, eczema and even obesity are all under the influence. If you’re looking to start a family or currently pregnant get in touch! There is SO much naturopaths can do to support health during this time.

19.01.2022 Any kind of food photography skills I develop will always be overshadowed by my lack of restraint and love of baked sweet potato. Lunch today: fresh spinach, mint and red cabbage; quinoa, sweet potato and satay tofu. Topped with some avo, black sesames and a splash of apple cider vinegar and chilli oil. Everything in this bowl can be prepped ahead and thrown together at lunch time and will make you feel so much better than -another- cheese toastie x #ifieatanymorebreadillexplode #lunch #mealprep #salad #tgif

19.01.2022 "Eat whole foods and avoid packaged or processed foods, which are high in unwanted food additives and preservatives that disrupt the healthy bacteria in the gut." Just one of the many messages in this great article. You don't necessarily need to go out and drop your dollars on probiotics but you DO need to pay more attention to what goes into your body in order to take care of your mental health. Food is not an alternative to prescribed medication, but it's a cornerstone of good health which shouldn't be ignored. https://www.health.harvard.edu//gut-feelings-how-food-affe

18.01.2022 "Sleep disturbance, particularly insomnia, has been shown to follow anxiety and precede depression in some people, but it is also a common symptom of both disorders" It is SO important to locate and treat the cause of sub-optimal health, and not just the symptoms that are bothering you. Spending the time, one-on-one to go through your health history, diet and lifestyle, and body as a whole are the keys to successful, holistic and meaningful treatment. I am here to help! Book in with me to start the ball rolling and feel your best. http://www.abc.net.au//sleep-problems-anxiety-and-/8521582

18.01.2022 Whilst I love the idea of purchasing fresh produce grown close to home, convenience often has other ideas. Frozen veggies are a fabulous way to have nutrients on-hand and ready to go, and they may also minimise food waste as they hold their freshness in the freezer instead of looking sad in the crisper after a week in the fridge. Get in touch for more ideas on including veggies in your daily diet. http://www.abc.net.au//2017/fresh-vs-frozen-vegies/8443310

17.01.2022 It’s not just about weight gain and hangovers. Whilst the festive season can be a lot of fun, it can also place big demands on our energy reserves and our mental and emotional health; not to mention our poor old livers. ‘Health goals’ can be anything that you’ve been working towards this year: fitness, an improvement in a long-standing medical condition, improved well being and mental health and, of course, the old favourite: weight loss or maintenance. Here are some simp...le strategies that won’t have you missing out on the fun, but will help you to maintain your focus and resolve. 1. Remember your goals and remind yourself of why you set them in the first place. There is absolutely nothing more important than your health and well being. Without it, your ability to live fully and be who you hope to be for loved ones is compromised. What could be a better Christmas gift to your family and friends than a healthy you? 2. Don’t deprive yourself. There’s no surer way to ensure a binge session than deprivation. The festive season is meant to be a time of celebration and that tends to equal a greater intake of rich foods and sugary drinks (alcoholic or otherwise). It’s great to partake in the festivities, just try doing it mindfully. Most importantly, if you do overindulge don’t waste energy feeling guilty about it; reset and move on. 3. Prioritise rest and rejuvenation. Sure partying is fun, but unless you’re under 25 it’s unlikely you can back up late night after late night after late night without ceasing to be a pleasure to be around. Our mental health is the first thing to suffer when we’re fatigued; negative feelings and lack of motivation creep in, sabotaging our hard work. 4. Delegate. If you’re hosting parties or the big Christmas lunch you’re not superwoman/man! Ask people to bring plates to share. Take guests up on offers to help clear up. Many hands make light work and things are better when shared. 5. Visualise a successful outcome. Might sound a bit ‘woo-woo’ but it might be just what you need to give yourself the motivation to stick to your guns. Specifically: think about how you’ll feel if you leave before that last cocktail and go home to bed. Think about how you’ll feel if you stick to your routine and get out the door to exercise. Think about you’ll feel if you continue to prioritise you and your health. You get the picture. This festive season enjoy yourself mindfully and keep the big picture in mind. Prioritise yourself, your health and in doing so, your loved ones. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about?

17.01.2022 - A typical moment in clinic - Me: "How much water would you drink in a day?" Patient: *squirms, avoids eye contact* "I try really hard but probably not enough" It can be a challenge to get fluids in, especially when it's cold (unless you're like me and rely on a constant stream of hot tea or hot water to keep warm) but there are so many reasons why it's so important to DRINK! https://ed.ted.com//what-would-happen-if-you-didn-t-drink-

16.01.2022 Hi! It's been a while between posts for me, but this is a great article that we should all read. Nutrition education for my clients generally starts here: what is a processed food? In general, if there's a nutritional panel to read and ingredients you don't recognise, it's a highly processed product and you should think about leaving it on the shelf. https://www.abc.net.au//ultraprocessed-food-what-/11216306

16.01.2022 This salad is a result of the collab I did recently with Chris Nayna. It's fresh, zingy and an absolute winner. If you don't like salmon, lentils or chicken will work just as well. You can't half tell that green is my favourite colour!

15.01.2022 Are you getting enough protein? I am a huge advocate for obtaining protein in the diet from wholefood, plant-based sources. Click on the link to find out why, and how... https://www.lauragale.com.au//5-plant-based-protein-source

15.01.2022 There is absolutely a place for antibiotics. 15.01.2022 Yes these pancakes are green! When the recipe reads like a green smoothie then they definitely tick the 'healthy and delicious' breakfast box in my book! Another amazing recipe from by @luisegreenkitchenstories #breakfast #pancakes #brunch #greenkitchenstories #glutenfree

14.01.2022 N E W R E C I P E: As the weather in Melbourne looks set to heat back up again at the start of next week, it's the perfect time to whip up a batch of these and pop them in the freezer ready to go! Nothing nasty about these guilt-free sweet treats. https://www.lauragale.com.au///Recipe-Pine-basil-icy-poles

14.01.2022 "New figures released from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show heart disease is a leading cause of death among Australian women." It's a common misconception that heart disease is more common in men than women. In fact, following menopause women experience a similar incidence. Would you recognise the signs? https://www.abc.net.au//heart-disease-in-women-sh/11220054

14.01.2022 I love a little bit of learning straight up on a Monday morning. This article is easy to understand and focuses on a topic that everyone could learn a little bit more about - gut health! There's a lot more to having a healthy gut than popping a probiotic (although this isn't a bad strategy!) Two things you can do right away, today that won't cost you anything: more fresh veggies and fruit, and more water! Fibre is key to help the balance of good bacteria within the gut and adequate hydration is also critical. Good gut health sets the scene for good health overall, improving digestion, skin health, food intolerance, and the health of the immune system - just as a starting point! Empower your Monday morning http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//acne-eczema-psoriasis-/

14.01.2022 As if it’s not enough to absolutely love your job and the incredible women you work alongside!

14.01.2022 It's about that time of the afternoon when all you can seem to think about is reaching for a sweet treat, but perhaps give this a read before you do. It doesn't need to be about eliminating sugar completely out of the diet, but it does pay to be aware what the sweet stuff is doing to your health. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/318818.php

13.01.2022 Isn't it interesting that despite the introduction of sugar-replacement sweeteners touted as a solution to weight gain; obesity problems are only getting worse? By no means are sweeteners the only things responsible for our burgeoning waistlines, but they are certainly not the solution. If you need help kicking a sugar habit, book an appointment and we'll work through it properly. http://www.theaustralian.com.au//69f06f056402fd8c534bfa461

13.01.2022 This is a great article that I encourage you to skim over if you've got a couple of minutes and feel confused by the message that 'carbs are unhealthy' - they're not. In fact, they're critical to a balanced diet. But not all carbs are created equal... https://authoritynutrition.com/12-healthy-high-carb-foods/

13.01.2022 Goals, intentions, aspirations, dreams... whatever you’re calling them, now is a perfect time to have a think and make some commitments to yourself and your health. Here’s some tips to get you going: Make goals SMART: that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-based. SMART goals allow you to get specific and increase the likelihood of achieving what you set out to. Need more info? Google it. Dream BIG! Decide what you want or how you want to feel and then... make a plan to get there. Reach out to friends, family and professionals for help. This isn’t a solo mission. Write goals down and then tell someone. People with written goals are 42% more likely to achieve them. Telling a friend increases this rate to 72%. I don’t know about you but based on this I’m telling anyone who will listen what my goals are! As part of your plan, make sure you create a safety net for times when your motivation starts to wane. Check-in with the friend you told about your goals. Remember the WHY - how did you want to feel? What was reaching your goal going to allow you to achieve? If improving your health and mindset is on your ‘to-do’ list for 2020, DM me and let’s start working on it TODAY.

11.01.2022 As the first proper week of the new year dawns, it’s time to clean up our plates. The hero here was the food processor - whizzing together fresh herbs, tahini, lemon juice, ACV, plenty of pepper, a slurp of maple syrup and a tin of beans.. a protein packed topping for charred cauli and cabbage and some fresh greens. And an hour ago I had no plans for dinner. It doesn’t have to be hard or fancy, just yum and filling. #dinner #sunday #fresh

11.01.2022 My newest blog post - read all about some of our favourite tools of the trade down at PHD

11.01.2022 I’ve just finished Dr. Rangan Chatterjee’s ‘The 4 Pillar Plan’ and really enjoyed it. A quick and easy read, chock-full of useful and common-sense lifestyle advice and adjustments that take relatively little effort for big reward - what we’re all looking for, right? As someone that drones on about this sort of stuff for a living, I’ve got some fresh ideas ready to pass onto patients, as well as lots of confirmation that the tasks I’m setting are kicking health goals in multi...ple ways. Here are just five of my fave messages: RELAXATION is paramount. We need ‘me-time’ every day. Even if it’s only 5 minutes, do something that is just for you and don’t spend a second feeling guilty about it. MEDITATION doesn’t need to feel intimidating, difficult or like ‘something that other people do’. Jump on YouTube and listen to a guided medication for 5 minutes. Listen to your favourite song on repeat with your eyes closed. Be in nature and pay attention to the sights, sounds and smells without having your beak in your smart phone. MOVE your body. You don’t have to run a marathon, hell you don’t have to run at all. The heart pumps blood, nutrients and oxygen around the body but the lymphatic system (our in-house cleaner, if you will) doesn’t have a pump. The only way it works and cleans out the junk is if you move. GET OUTSIDE first thing in the morning. Spending 20 minutes outside in the morning helps regulate our body clock and circadian rhythms; improving sleep, mood and even digestion. Aim for FIVE a day. 5 different veggies, ideally 5 different colours. Veggies are jam-packed with nutrients and fibre. Especially PRE-BIOTIC fibre which is critical, even moreso than a probiotic, to developing and maintaining a top-notch microbiome which contributes to digestion, mood and the immune system. There is so much we can achieve with diet and lifestyle change before we even think about herbs, nutrients or, as the case may be, medications. That’s not to say that they’re not wonderful, but it’s so important we get the foundations right to start with.

11.01.2022 Almost to the minute, it’s been exactly two months since I put in the hardest day at the office but brought home the greatest reward - my little man! Speaking of days at the office, I’m headed back there in July I can’t wait to share some new recipes I’m working on and also to get back to @lovekindnesstea and my patients in clinic Stay tuned in the next few weeks for dates and specials! 10.01.2022 I spent some time last night doing what I love - educating! If you look closely you can see I'm talking about one of my fave topics here: Fat If you've got a group of interested people and you're keen to bring some awareness about how good nutrition can impact every aspect of our lives, get in touch! #nutrition #education #food #health #wellness

09.01.2022 70% of packaged foods contain added sugar that is not clearly identified by nutrition labels. Marketing tools like the Health Star Rating system can be OK as a tool to compare products at a glance, but they shouldn't be used as a way to identify 'healthy foods'. Case in point: Nutri-Grain gets 4 stars. I can help you wade through the confusion when it comes to reading food labels so you can shop confidently. Contact me directly to book your appointment today. http://www.abc.net.au//food-health-rating-labels-f/8738634

09.01.2022 As part of my practice, I really enjoy getting out and chatting to school teachers and parents about changing children's attitudes towards food. It's not about 'good' vs. 'junk',or 'punishments' vs. 'treats' it's about re framing how we think about eating and why our bodies need certain foods to thrive and grow. This article is a great jumping off point with some simple strategies to improve family meal times. http://www.sbs.com.au//six-ways-improve-meal-times-your-ch

09.01.2022 If you’re looking for a naturopath (or nutritionist) that will give you a bunch of generic supplements and send you on your merry way, it ain’t me My passion as a practitioner is definitely spending the time to educate my patients about what’s going on with their health and bodies Once we understand WHY something is happening and what’s driving it or keeping it from resolving, it totally changes the game in terms of our health and the improvements that we can ach...ieve. More often than not, after your first appointment I’ll give you a few diet and lifestyle changes to work on and leave it at that, where appropriate (we’ve all got improvements we can make that will make a MASSIVE difference, guaranteed). Then I’ll go away and do my research to make sure that what I DO prescribe for you is targeted specifically to YOU and is going to achieve the most bang for buck and tick off the goals we set together. In my opinion; when we dish out supplements willy nilly and put patients in generic boxes, we’re doing exactly what conventional medicine does. That’s cool if that’s what you’re into, but it kind of misses the point of naturopathy as a model of treatment. So, if you want a fish - head to the fish shop. If you want to learn, grow and get better, use this link and make your first appointment NOW https://peninsula-herbal-dispensary.cliniko.com/bookings See more

09.01.2022 "A diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits is a healthier option than eating a lot of simple carbohydrates found in processed foods. When you eat is also important. Don’t skip meals. Doing so may result in drops in blood sugar that cause you to feel jittery, which may worsen underlying anxiety." Smart eating in conjunction with specialised additional nutrients and herbs is a fantastic, effective, and safe way to treat anxiety (alongside medication if that's where you're at).
