25.01.2022 In the Spotlight: Charles Blackman Charles Blackman is one of Australias most celebrated and significant figurative artists and was an exceptional draughtsperson. His use of pen and ink, charcoal and pencil - from quick sketches to large sized works on paper - was a constant throughout his life. His drawings bear evidence of the personal nature of his art, used to record ideas, capture daily life, and explore composition in an expressive manner. Portrait of a Young Girl wit...h a Bow in her Hair is a direct and sweet work, full of love and the innocence of childhood, with the child directly engaging the viewer. There is a calm and gentleness to the drawing, perhaps emphasized through the use of charcoal with its richness of texture and softer edge than pen or pencil. The sitter is Blackman's eldest daughter, Christabel and likely completed in Brisbane in 1967, on the family's return to Australia from London. Portrait of a Young Girl with a Bow in her Hair was included in the Lauraine Diggins Fine Art 1994 exhibition, Charles Blackman: A Line Around a Dream. Contemporary reviews of that exhibition noted Blackmans masterly control of his medium. In particular his ability to shape calm, still images which speak poetically of suffering and joy, dreams and nightmares, loneliness and love. (Simon Plant, 'A master of colours', Herald Sun, Melbourne, Tues 22 March, 1994, p.61) Read more about this artwork on our blog https://www.diggins.com.au//in-the-spotlight-charles-blac/ Charles Blackman Portrait of a Young Girl with a Bow in her Hair charcoal on paper, 50.8 x 34.8 cm, Copyright the Estate of Charles Blackman See more

24.01.2022 IN THE SPOTLIGHT.... Henry Burn (View From Richmond to South Yarra Hill) 1868 Born in Birmigham Burn exhibited watercolours at the Royal Academy in 1830 & the Birmingham Society of Arts in 1832 & 1850. Settling in Melbourne in 1853 he produced numerous views of Melbourne and surrounding districts until the 1870s, particularly light and airy landscapes of the Richmond/Collingwood area, where he lived.

23.01.2022 In the Spotlight: EMILY KAM KNGWARRAY In the late 1970s, Emily took up batik, along with other artists from Utopia, N.T. as a means of expressing cultural stories and designs and began painting on canvas in 1988-89. Her earlier work developed a distinctive skeletal linear formation overlaid with dots to form highly abstracted works. Women’s Dreaming (1993) features these meandering lines to depict the bush potato or wild yam. Emily was custodian of the yam dreaming which is ...of great ceremonial importance. The underlying arcs are representative of awelye, ceremonial body design, painted onto women’s breasts and chest. Emily Kngwarray is widely regarded as one of the most notable Australian artists of recent times. Her paintings are held in all major museums and galleries in Australia and in significant contemporary collections internationally. https://www.diggins.com.au//in-the-spotlight-emily-kam-kn/

19.01.2022 In the Spotlight: THOMAS CLARK Thomas Clark painted several views around Melbourne including Red Bluff, Elwood. The area now known as Point Ormond was originally called Red Bluff in 1839 and a quarantine station was established there from 1840. Red Bluff was levelled in 1906 and used to fill in the swampy lands of Elwood. The subdued range of his palette, the thin application of paint and the moist atmosphere he depicted, all reflect his English sensibility. He taught at the Artisans School of Design, Collingwood in 1856 and was appointed the first Drawing Master of the School of Design at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1870 1876 where he counted among his students Frederick McCubbin and Tom Roberts. 19.01.2022 IN THE SPOTLIGHT: ETHEL CARRICK FOX Ethel Carrick Fox is best known for her vibrant paintings created en plein air, capturing the leisure class of Paris the markets; parks; gardens and beaches of France. The rich dabs of pure bright colour and a focus on decorative rather than narrative elements, allow the strength of her understanding of colour and her considered compositions to shine through. Carrick Fox established her successful career in Paris and London and in her reg...ular visits to Australia, where she held exhibitions of her work and undertook painting excursions. A painting of a French flower market by Carrick Fox sold at auction in 1996 becoming the highest price achieved by an Australian woman artist; with more recent sales over one million dollars (in 2008 and 2019) overtaking this earlier precedent. SCREENING in MELBOURNE Sunday 8th September 2pm at Cinema Classic Elsternwick with Q&A session and the D'art car on view... SCREENING in SYDNEY Sunday 22nd September 6.30pm at Cinema Ritz Randwick with Q&A session Featuring: Robert Clinch, Jeff Brown, Bill Buckle, Tommy Dysart, Joan Brockenshire, David Thomas, Lauraine Diggins, Gerard Vaughan, Annie Brown, Bill Hemming, Paul Faulkner, Michael Schoenfeld and Beverley Clinch. Director: Karl von Möller The iconic Goggomobil Dart car painted with distinctive painted paper darts by artist Robert Clinch created a unique objet d'art. Classic car collector Jeff Brown, son of renowned art dealer Joseph Brown, whose collection is a highlight of the National Gallery of Victoria, collaborated with Clinch to conceive the project. The paper dart has become a recognised feature throughout Robert's hyper-real paintings and works on paper depicting urban Melbourne. No two darts on the car are the same, and narratives present themselves through the various groupings, telling a multitude of stories over the surface of the car. The Goggomobil was named and designed by Bill Buckle in the 1960s who thought 'Dart' summed up the streamlined little sports car. The sense of flight and fun implied by paper darts is a perfect fit for the Dart car. The Goggomobil - spelt G-O-G-G-O - became a household name through a memorable advertising campaign featuring Tommy Dysart. These key figures in the history of the Dart and the realisation of the remarkable art project feature in the movie. https://www.diggins.com.au/blog/

17.01.2022 IN THE SPOTLIGHT: HANS HEYSEN There is something immensely exhilarating when tall white gums tower into the blue heavens the subtle quality of the edges where they meet the sky how mysterious. Carrol, A., North, I., and Treganza, J., Hans Heysen Centenary Retrospective 1877 1977, Art Gallery Board of South Australia, 1977, p.12... Hans Heysen's celebrated landscapes are readily recognised, particularly his atmospheric depictions of light filtering through towering ancient gum trees. This striking watercolour highlights the majesty of the Australian gum tree, rising even beyond the picture plane. Heysen had a passion for depicting such ancient trees, especially with a glow filtering through the branches, providing a contrast between light and shadow. The resting figure and quiet horses lend a calm atmosphere and give perspective to the heroic trees. 15.01.2022 In The Spotlight: ISO RAE Isobel Rae was known as Iso, her nickname a somewhat relevant and familiar word to us today, as was her likely experience of isolation. At the outbreak of World War I, Iso Rae remained in Etaples, working for the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) with the British Red Cross from 1915 1919. As an artist, Rae depicted the scenes around her, producing around 200 drawings, mostly pastels and gouache, depicting the daily life of the military camp at Etap...les. Iso Rae captured camp life in her drawings of soldiers; the barracks; the hospitals; the prisoners, both German and allied; their accommodation; the horses; their training and recreation (football, cinema, theatre). Iso Rae was a skilled draughtsperson, her marks lively and capturing a spontaneity, yet balanced with thought-out and balanced compositions. This is a particularly fine drawing depicting a group of soldiers huddled around a brazier at night, embers blowing in the breeze and their individual uniforms bathed in an eerie glow. We have identified the figures as Scottish; the blue coat of the Hospital Blues worn by convalescents; Australian with the slouch hat and New Zelander with the 'lemon squeezer' hat. The peaked tents in the background provide an anchored backdrop giving a further intimacy to the group of figures. Read more about this fascinating drawing which is dedicated to an officer from the Matron and nurses at Etaples. https://www.diggins.com.au/artworks/a-devil-etaples/

14.01.2022 In the Spotlight: SHEILA HAWKINS Sheila Hawkins is recognised for her contribution to children’s literature and her strong sense of design and layout is evident in this painting which embodies an atmosphere of calm, despite the tangle of limbs and foreboding clouds. The monumental maternal figure is a picture of stability and dependence, against the writhing child with her vertical presence contrasted against the child's limbs; rolling hills and clouds. Largely self-taught, H...awkins moved to England in the early 1930s and Gypsy Mother was inspired by her travels in Spain, cut short by the Civil War. Her work is represented in the Mitchell Library, Sydney, and in the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, which holds a photograph of Sheila Hawkins in her Hampstead studio with Gypsy Mother on the wall behind her. https://www.diggins.com.au//in-the-spotlight-sheila-hawki/ See more

12.01.2022 Listen to Zhou Xiaoping talking about his unique artistic practice on The Art Show as aired this morning on Radio National, explaining how he draws on his experience of Chinese inks and rice paper, combined with with western art concepts, including the use of oils and canvas, as well as drawing on the influence of his travels in the north of Australia, particularly Arnhem Land and his connection with Aboriginal people and culture, including the use of ochres. 08.01.2022 In the Spotlight: JESSIE SCARVELL Glenalvon, Murrurundi depicts an area Jessie Scarvell painted on several occasions, the rural landscape around the picturesque mountains of the Liverpool Ranges in the Upper Hunter region of NSW. Our research of this painting has reunited it with its original title, confirmed through the illustration in the Art Society of New South Wales annual exhibition in 1895. Her harmonious use of colour and painterly brushmarks focus this celebration o...f Australian pastoral beauty, a flock of sheep central to the composition. Jessie Scarvell is represented in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the S. H. Ervin Gallery, where an exhibition of her work in 2012 brought new awareness to this female artist of the Australian Impressionist School. 08.01.2022 IN THE SPOTLIGHT.... MICHAEL MCWILLIAMS KNEE DEEP IN THE WILLOWS depicts a Friesian cow stranded in the mud and includes a frustrated farmer, hands on hips, on the other side of the river, contemplating the next move. The scene is inspired by the artists wanderings amongst the willows near his home in northern Tasmania, either fishing or with his dogs, where he is often confronted with a Friesian cow strayed from nearby grazing paddocks. Humans are rare in McWilliams painti...ng. However, recent works introduce a human dialogue into his usual animal inhabited world. A further treasure in this painting is a Thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger hidden in the shadows, a subtle conservationist statement from the artist who is passionate about their ongoing existence despite human intervention in their environment. McWilliams craft has evolved from smaller scale works, particularly painted wooden panels or painting on furniture, to larger scale canvases where the landscape is the focus. Much of McWilliams' knowledge of antiques was acquired during his teenage years when he travelled with his father on buying trips around Tasmania for their antique shop in Longford. McWilliams explains "I started painting on furniture simply because I liked the old timber, and it was at hand. I enjoy painting things that are close to me: water, trees and mountains, and familiar local animals." In many of his works, its a fleeting moment in nature that he captures and preserves. The viewer curious to see what is inside is presented with a delightful surprise. The element of hidden surprise adds an extra dimension to McWilliams painting. Look carefully at the artworks as those who undertake the treasure hunt will be rewarded with a glimpse of a thylacine, a favoured motif of the artist. Like many, he is incredulous that human intervention could cause the extinction of this species and hopes that perhaps there are still a few Tasmanian Tigers out there, hiding in the shadows as they are in his paintings. McWilliams has been interested in the Thylacine since he was a child, McWilliams explains "Ive drawn it since I was small, and have always tried to imagine what it would be like to see one and to consider different relationships we could have, like having one for a pet. I try to imagine them into my life." The added element of fun and humour is a familiar trait in Michaels work although it does not detract from his environmental message which prompts the viewer to question the relationship between humans and animals, whether wild or domestic; the relationship between native and introduced species; and the relationship between humans and the environment and the impact this has made for native species in particular. 07.01.2022 JACOPO LIGOZZI 1547 1627 Christ Carrying the Cross 1604 oil on canvas 135.9 x 102.5 cm... This dramatic depiction of Christ Carrying the Cross displays Ligozzis remarkable naturalism and highly accomplished rendering of detail. His controlled hand is evident in the haunting visage of Christ and the beautifully observed armour and weapons of the guard. The pommel of his sword exemplifies the often drawn comparisons between Ligozzis fastidious draughtsmanship and that of northern painters in Italy such as Hans Rottenhammer. Like many of the Surrealists, Gleeson kept paper and pen beside his bed to record his dreams and used various painting techniques including frottage, decalcomania and impasto. By 1980s the artist had pushed the extreme of the figure so far that to him it had almost become unrecognizable, hence his work became more abstract as he no longer felt the need to use form at all. This resulted in his later works being mainly oil on large canvasses and is particularly pleasing, showing how Gleeson's struggle within eventually matured to a more calm, balanced depiction. ___ James Gleeson's artworks have been included extensively in public and private collections, not limited to the following: Lapsed Shadows Recycled to a Capable Coast 1988 Art Gallery of New South Wales; The Message Arrives 1995 Art Gallery of South Australia; The Secret Heart of the Headland 1991 National Gallery of Australia; The Darkening Stage 1991 National Gallery of Victoria; The Opening Gate 1989 the Colin and Liz Laverty Collection and The Dance 1989 James Fairfax Collection.
