25.01.2022 A couple of the stunning faces back at group classes today. So grown up since I saw them last!! #dogschool #melbournedogs #dogtraining #malamute #lagottoromagnolo #positivereinforcement #altonanorth #lauramundydogtraining

24.01.2022 These adorable faces will graduate next week. Couldn’t be more proud of how far they’ve all come. From shy and building confidence to be able to do a stay away from their mum without panicking, to reduced lead chewing from frustration, and so much more. Celebrate the wins YOUR dog has as an individual, every dog is different, as is their progress. Goal setting and realistic expectations are crucial for the babies. So proud of you all!!

24.01.2022 When you’ve been out all morning meeting new doggy friends. Could he be any cuter???

23.01.2022 I’m really sorry to everyone for the delayed email replies, slow voicemail responses, forgetting who I need to reply back to, everything. I’m needing to take some personal leave around sessions as my heart girl, my inspiration for the work I do, is a bit poorly. If I can’t see you then I’ll refer to one of my other amazing colleagues and respected positive trainers. I’m sorry I need to take some leave with my Angel girl but kinda sorry not sorry as she totally deserves it. They give us their whole lives so they deserve for us to give them the best care back. The time we have is never enough but hopefully I still have some more time yet. I promise to reply back to everyone ASAP. Thanks for being so understanding

23.01.2022 Benny is needing to walk with my partner now as I had surgery on Monday. All of his training has given him great walking skills, but I’m the cue for those walking skills too, plus the reinforcement history is with me, plus I have his sister with me, and I’m shuffling strangely. All of this totally changes the picture for him. As I’ve said a million times I’m sure, our environment cues behaviour so we need to gradually train for all scenarios. How many times have we thought ou...r dogs walk beautifully but if we take the kids on bikes and they race off ahead that it becomes super challenging. We need to gradually train for this too. Hubby is also getting trained here, not just Benny On a side note, yay for restrictions easing and yes we will be back ASAP. The phone and emails have not stopped and beautiful ones at that saying I’ve been highly recommended. It means the world hearing that, thank you! I’m trying to reply to as many as I can as quickly as I can. I’ll be off being able to physically handle dogs for another week or so sorry. If I can’t see you though I’ll still reply and try to link you in with another great trainer near you. Enjoy this sunshine and new levels of freedom everyone and well done Melbournites on staying strong and getting us to this point!! See more

23.01.2022 Just helped with a husbandry demo on a Zoom supervision session for therapy dog training. Just catching my Zen between sessions coz this is normal right? #portiesofinstagram #portie #pwd #adogslife #therapydogs #positivetraining #nosuchthingasdominantdogs #livinthelife #sleepysaturday

22.01.2022 Happy Easter everyone. I hope your day includes some quiet down time to enjoy feeling some love with your precious doggo’s and human families #easter #dogs #portie #snuggletime #love #beingmindful

19.01.2022 Lots of time spent in the shade with this pretty lady in this afternoon’s consult. It’s warm out there! Pepper is a 9 month old springer x beagle. Such a delightful nature and temperament. With those genetics though she sure is adventurous and her hound nose can take her off and not come back. A session on all things recall fundamentals today. The recall would be the easiest complexity wise to train, but can be the hardest to get right and easy to accidentally mess up. It’s also the most important to teach to keep your pups safe. Can’t wait to hear how you’re going beautiful girl! #springerx #beaglex #recalls #dogtraining #northmelbourne #come #recalltraining #positivereinforcement #lauramundydogtraining

19.01.2022 Gorgeous Charlie the goldie puppy. Working on some basics of loose lead walking, recalls etc. A sensational pup from an amazing breeder with the sweetest nature. #iwantedtostealher #goldiepup #goldenretriever #goldensofinstagram #puppytraining #goldengirl

19.01.2022 Dexter the handsome GSD boy is learning strangers aren’t so scary. Also under the care of an amazing VB, we’re working together to help him feel less scared about his world. Such a sweet boy. His story will be a longer one but that’s ok, pushing him will only mean distrust and setbacks ... #gsd #gsdofinstagram #behaviour #dogbehaviour #germanshepherds #dogtraining

19.01.2022 Leads. A management tool, not a training tool.

18.01.2022 For those of you in Melbourne out enjoying this beautiful spring weather, please let gorgeous Amico the therapy lagotto in training warn you of these horrendous rye grass seeds that are everywhere at the moment. Just a few seconds sniffing in the grass and he squealed and his eye puffed up and off to the emergency vet. A grass seed had gone into his third eye lid. Still in a lot of pain after removing it and waiting on news as to whether any permanent damage may have been don...e to his eye. Unfortunately they’re really bad at the moment along creek trails and in parks. Be very careful where your pups are sniffing as it can happen so quickly and these nasty things can cause a lot of damage. A freak accident but you never know. Snakes are also out so be very careful out there everyone. Fingers crossed for a speedy and full recovery beautiful boy #springdangers #grassseeds #grassseedseason #becareful #watchwhereyousniff #lagottoromagnolo #therapydogs #summeriscoming See more

18.01.2022 Every trainer has their pet peeves in the training world, and ok I probably have more than your average bear. Prong collars, ecollars, squirt bottles, even nose halters a lot of the time, but this one is right up there. The splitter lead! Why do I hate it so much? I can just envisage the worst case scenarios that I see and hear about all the time. The getting rushed by the loose dog on the street, the dogs that redirect onto other dogs or handlers when stressed, the dogs tha...t are fearful or over stimulated on walks.... I passed a guy out walking just earlier with two gigantic Amstaffs walking together with only a splitter lead separating them. If a dog was loose and a fight kicked off there would be no way to separate and contain each individual dog. If they turn on each other they cannot be separated without putting your arm in the middle to unclip them from each other. If one jumped up and got twisted legs around the lead it’s a pain to untangle only a foot of lead also attached to another dog getting frustrated. Total disaster waiting to happen. Each dog was also pulling like sled dogs so their combined weight would have been enormous and there’s no way to teach a dog to walk to a loose lead if they’re attached to another dog. If you have more than one dog, have them on their own lead, it’s SO much safer!! I can’t imagine why they were ever invented personally See more

17.01.2022 These devices are illegal to be imported into Australia and they’re illegal to use in Victoria. Sadly I get quite a few owners reach out to me after another trainer they’ve consulted has recommended their use, ILLEGALLY, on their dogs. I’ve even had owners of pups as young as 6 months old having them recommended for. Prong collars are against the prevention of cruelty to animals act in Victoria and fines can be faced if used. If you’ve had them recommended and something doesn’t sit right about it then trust your gut because you’re right. Reach out for a second opinion because there’s so much better practices available that we can use to help!

16.01.2022 I’m in love! Biscuit the Irish wolfhound x bull Arab rescue pup. Divinely gentle giant who’s learning some impulse control around other dogs and helping his human with some leash mechanics and body movement work. He nearly ended up in the back of my car to come home with me! #rescuepup #wolfhoundx #wolfhoundxbullarab #wolfhoundsofinstagram #leashwork #positivetraining #socialskills

14.01.2022 Baby puppy consults all day every day please . Little 9 week old spoodle puppy Frankie is one lucky babe to have found her perfect forever home with her sensational Mumma. I use food lures to teach bubba’s new behaviours. I never use physical compulsion with hands or leads. There are too many reasons to mention so I won’t go into it but if anyone says they don’t use ‘food treats’ in training....run away!!! I’m happy to go into it more though if anyone has questions about why I disagree with this philosophy and why it makes no sense whatsoever. Please stay this little and adorable forever Frankie! #spoodlesofinstagram #spoodle #spoodlepuppy #spoodlesofaustralia #puppytraining #puppylove #puppiesofinstagram #dogtraining #positivereinforcement #positivetraining #forcefree #lauramundydogtraining

14.01.2022 Our environment is always cuing our behaviour based on past learning history. Presence of mat has always predicted to go to it, being asked to lay down and then reinforcers are produced. Dogs will always look for patterns in their environment of what predicts appetitive or aversive outcomes and behave accordingly. A mat being present can then be proofed in a variety of settings to cue relaxed behaviour stationed on it. Today these superstars got to think more about what other... things in their dogs’ environments might be cuing behaviours they may not want and what these environmental cues can be trained to cue instead. For example seeing another dog on a walk could become a cue to look at their human. It applies to everything. It’s a good way to frame all behaviour training instead of in this context I want ‘x’ behaviour to stop, it can be in this context I want ‘y’ behaviour to occur instead and train it. Happy training everyone! #dogtraining #therapydogsintraining #melbournedogs #positivereinforcement #aba #behaviouranalysis #behaviour #lauramundydogtraining See more

13.01.2022 Congratulations to Nessie and Jessie today on finally getting your post lockdown graduations completed! Well done to the whole group that weathered the lockdown and still came out the other side thriving. #groupclasses #dogschool #dogtrainingschool #puppytraining #spanatriever #positivetraining #graduationday

12.01.2022 A couple of gorgeous puppers from today’s consults. Arley the rescue Rottie x Kelpie pup (looks like a permanent rottie puppy, so cute) and 19wo groodle puppy Oddy. Both sessions for separation distress. It’s a huge issue currently due to covid. Both presentations were totally different but I’m sure they’ll both do well on their training paths. Well done you guys. #groodle #rottiex #rescuedog #separationanxiety #barrierfrustration #independencetraining #dogbehaviour #lauramundydogtraining

12.01.2022 Dog training tip of the day. Don’t leave treats in your pocket then leave your pants within reach. Your pants become their own snuffle mat. That is all

12.01.2022 Stunning Sansa the GSD pup starting some privates post lockdown. Lead reactivity to dogs on lead and jumping/mouthing new people. Responded beautifully to some foundation work on noticing other dogs without barking or pulling, engaging with her owner, play foundations, and it turns out she’s very touch sensitive. We often think dogs mouthing equals play or being ‘naughty’ and jumping is attention seeking. Observing Sansa and doing some touch assessments she clearly told me sh...e used those behaviours to get people to not touch her. Some gentle reps of touch she consented to, could tell me no by just looking at my reaching hand, and reinforcement paired with touch and the shift was already dramatic. Her reactions on lead indicate more frustration related behaviour with a touch of nervousness so she’ll get some well matched play buddies to learn with. All of these issues are so common following lockdown in puppyhood. Can’t wait to work with you again sweet girl. #gsd #germanshepherd #germanshepherds #positivereinforcement #positivereinforcementtraining #positivereinforcementdogtraining #listentoyourdog #lauramundydogtraining See more

11.01.2022 Got a call this morning as a new enquiry that sadly I had to refer due to being far away and being booked out but they made my day! They asked ‘do you use correction chains etc because if you do I am not interested and only want positive reinforcement focussed training’. Yay! They were involved in helping humans as a career and said they help humans positively and only want to do the same with their dogs but needed help. I wish I got asked that every day!! I’m not out to pre...ach not using aversive methods, it’s not my job to change people’s beliefs, only to inform and educate on what we know scientifically about behaviour. I don’t use aversives for so many reasons I won’t get into now but I love it when owners want to learn why their dogs behave how they do and modify that ethically rather than focussing on just stopping behaviours quickly whatever the means. Just sharing a short (albeit annoying angle sorry) video on how my dogs walk (poor old Lil pants all the time, I haven’t dragged her out in horrendous heat and exhausted her). It’s all about connection to me, choice, reinforcement history. Ironically I have neighbours near me that have gone from collar, to halti, to correction chain, to prong collar and now shock collar on their dogs because they run off. Not surprisingly they still do even through all of that as their owner has no history of reinforcement, they want to get to other dogs and owners with food, toys, other appetitive experiences. I often wonder how much further can they go before trying some reinforcement instead. It’s never about stopping your dog running off or pulling away or ignoring your calls, but the why? What do you mean to your dogs? What’s their history of coming to you or being in proximity to you and what’s the value in being away from you. Tilt those scales in your favour and you’ll have a totally different relationship with your dog! See more

11.01.2022 Lenny the 3 year old setter very pleased with his efforts today and he communicated to us all that he’s actually a bit scared of seeing other dogs, skateboards and motorbikes. That’s okay buddy, we’ll help you feel better about those things. Times for a long nap in the cool now #redsetter #irishsetter #redsettersofinstagram #dogtraining #dogbehaviour #melbourne #positivetraining

11.01.2022 We’re back to in person sessions again finally! Could not have had a cuter start. Pluto the 9 week old Gaga labradoodle puppy. A picture of perfection of amazing breeding, raising and matching personality to family, as well as owners doing zoom pre-puppy arrival session. Setting pup and humans up for success has made all the difference. Learned his name, come, sit, mat, conditioning to lead without biting and lots of puppy education. You’re divine little man, can’t wait to watch you grow but secretly want you to stay this little and cute forever! #labradoodle #labradoodlesofinstagram #labradoodlepuppy #labradoodlelove #puppytraining #puppiesofinstagram @gagalabradoodles

11.01.2022 A couple of gorgeous faces from today’s full day of consults. Johnny the teen Viszla for potential as a therapy pup and foundation training plus Mila the 16wo pup GSD for behaviour assessment. 09.01.2022 Benny hangs out with a lot of older dogs. I do this deliberately because in the nicest possible way, they’re pretty boring. They just want to sniff around and be left alone. I control it and work on training him near them so I have lots of value and dogs just happen to be nearby. If he was always around just other excitable and playful dogs it could be annoying for him if he wasn’t in the mood, be too over stimulating for him, teach him seeing other dogs equals exciting play ...and cause him to run off when he sees other dogs. Variation in social experiences is important. Other dogs on lead equal notice them and look back at me to move on, to say hi politely and briefly then move on, hang out near each other but play with me, or go play when invited to but with lots of regular breaks. I’m finding dogs are being more and more over stimulated by other dogs through over socialising with free for all’s they run off to whenever they see the dogs and with no boundaries around the play. We don’t want dogs to just ‘sort it out’ that can go horribly wrong. We can create a lot more healthy doggy social interactions if we manage them and train them accordingly though. #dogsocialisation #hangingwiththeolds #olddoglove #gsp #portie #socialskills See more

09.01.2022 Gorgeous Dahlia the 1yo cavoodle for resource guarding and grooming aggression. Please come stand near my Kong again and play that game where I get chicken if I look at you while I have it! Very minor changes needed that’ll help reduce this behaviour dramatically. Well done gorgeous girl. It’ll take time and she told me no touchy feely please until I know you better. Respect those more subtle communications from our dogs and we can avoid a lot of inadvertently reinforced more assertive strategies. #cavoodlesofinstagram #cavoodle #cavoodles #cavoodlepuppy #resourceguarding #behaviourtraining #dogbehaviour #forcefree #positivereinforcement #dogtraining #dogbehavior

08.01.2022 Weekend catch up

08.01.2022 A few of the gorgeous kiddo’s from a 4 dog household doing a package of sessions with me. Lots of interesting behaviours to work through from sibling rivalry to car fear, inappropriate urination to destructive behaviour, barking to freezing on lead. All doing amazing work. Alibi the older lab boy is looking forward to some more respite from his young 6mo siblings Nala and Baxter’s needy behaviour that he’s too old for. Oldies need a break from pups just like we do. Nala’s freezing on lead simply needing minor changes to equipment as she’s fearful of the lead flapping in her face from her back attach harness and needs more leash relaxed instead of pulling in on short lead as tight lead pressure makes her nervous too. Baxter leapt in the car himself after some fun carrot treat tossing games across the back seat. Well done kiddo’s!

07.01.2022 Huge shout out to an amazing family I’ve had the privilege of working with for the past 7 months (which I know has felt like an eternity for them). Chloe and Tom with Harley the chi mix and Toby the cav puppy. Harley always had some anxiety issues and wasn’t massively fond of other dogs. Adding a puppy to the household was going to be challenging but I know their humans couldn’t imagine just how much hard work it’d be. Barking, growling, fence arguments, not even wanting to w...alk together. Sometimes it takes more than just training. For them it meant changing their home layout with fences, loads of external positive social experiences and training for Toby pup to ensure his healthy social development, linking in with an amazing vet behaviourist I collaborate with a lot to get Harley’s health stable and a looooot of exposure training and enrichment for both of them. All of a sudden it’s just finally clicked into place and Toby is taking it understandably slowly to suss out Harley’s boundaries and Harley is learning to feel listened to and to feel safe enough to offer vulnerability with play bows. You guys have put in above and beyond in efforts with your boys and I couldn’t be more proud. I know so many of you struggle with the same issue and sometimes relationships just don’t work and permanent management or even rehoming may be needed but these guys just wanted to share their story too that it CAN happen even though it can feel impossible some days. It takes a long time but taking it at their pace is what results in the most positive outcomes. Well done guys! #cavalierkingcharlesspaniel #cavaliersofinstagram #chix #householdissues #dogrelationships #positivetraining #lauramundydogtraining See more

05.01.2022 Issues with separation or being alone is such a common issue and with lockdown now easing it’s something I’m getting calls about every day. So many things can trigger this issue like changes in routines, moving house, changes to the family, losing another pet, going on holidays, general anxiety, sound sensitivity and so much more. I also find every dog’s story is different and the way they experience it and express it too. Gorgeous Murphy the 2yo Shih Tzu is attached to his ...Mum’s feet 24/7. For him, any barrier between he and his Mum and not receiving constant attention triggered intense panic. Murphy in his first session on the weekend purely learned to relax on a mat. He also was disinterested in food toys so we made it super easy for him to succeed and increased the value of the food it concealed. After lots of feeding through a baby gate to condition the barrier predicted positive things and Mum not leaving, he then enjoyed a chicken filled towel simply rolled up. This also builds his confidence that he can succeed trying things alone. By day two he was able to enjoy this towel while his mum could leave the room and return. This is huge for him! Working at his level and what he’s ready for is crucial. He may go slow, he may improve quickly. Rushing this issue and triggering panic only further conditions him that this set up is stressful. Doing that is just further set back to his feeling safe alone. It can be one of the most challenging issues to work through but there’s so much that can be done to help if done right. Doing it slowly and positively rather than reaching for the nearest spray or shock collar to suppress the expression of the stress can appear to ‘work’ but underneath it all is still that same emotional state of stress and anxiety that can explode like a pressure cooker in other ways (escaping, physical health issues, self-harming, hyperarousal on your return and so much more). Well done Murphy you sweet boy on doing so well already. #separationanxiety #separationstress #isolationdistress #barrierfrustration #anxiousdogs #shihtzu #dogbehaviour #independencetraining #dogenrichment #confidencebuilding See more

05.01.2022 Introducing you to one of our other fabulous trainers that you’ll see in our Rookies courses, Rebecca!! Bec is a dog trainer from the UK specialising in positive reinforcement training. She got her degree in Canine Behaviour and Training from Chester Uni and starting her own dog training business here in Melbourne’s west. Bec has a 4 year old Lurcher called Benji who is her baby and hopefully he’ll be making an appearance here in Australia as soon as she can get him here! She loves doing puppy training and helping people bring out the best in their dogs Bec is a wonderful trainer and a great group instructor. We’re so excited to have her on the team training our little Rookies crew. Those that have already met her on Sunday’s I’m sure agree she’s a great addition to the team. Welcome Bec!!!

02.01.2022 Hodgey, could you possibly be any cuter? Umm no is the answer. Hodgey has a fear of trucks which shows itself through lunging and barking at them (of course, I’m a herding dog he says). Give him some more distance and the fear avoidance behaviour comes out. Lots of engagement work, counter conditioning and play at safe distances. He did so well! #kelpie #kelpiesofinstagram #kelpiesofaustralia #kelpietraining #dogtraining #counterconditioning #tuggames #positivetraining

01.01.2022 So proud of these guys today. Some social rehab for Murphy who is a bit dog reactive when greeting new dogs but really wants to play. Lots of confidence building with the right dogs.
