15.01.2022 The Benifits of Mulch Mowing When mowing grass you should always ensure that you try not to take more then one third of the top of the grass off, this is because your lawn can recover easily and wont go into shock.... but what to do with all those lawn clippings? When you look at a blade of grass you can see 100% of its nutrients, if you remove one third then you are left with two thirds of the nutrients, basic mathematics. If you take away that one third of the grass blade t...hen you are essentially losing one third of the nutrients, so, you should be putting those clipping back onto the ground.... now, what about all those clumps of grass left on the lawn I hear you ask.... What a decent qualilty mulching mower will do is instead of cutting the grass and spitting it out the side, it will cut the grass, hold it in the cutting area and continue to chop it until it is a very fine mulch and then lay it on the turf... this prevents the clumps of grass being left everywhere and as an added bonus because it is so finely chopped it is readily taken up as nutrients (adds nitrogen to the grass plant and soil which makes the lawn greener). So next time you mow, try mulching the grass (if you have a mulching mower), if not then just let the grass fall and spread it with a rake, your lawn will love you for it. As an added tip, ensure that your cutting blades are sharp as sharp blade will cut the grass cleanly where blunt blades tent to rip the grass.
