21.01.2022 Following on from our post about the High Court Judge, lets talk some more about the Abuse of Power against people who are working hard to achieve their dream and then encounter a person, usually a man but sometimes a woman, in that journey who exploits their vulnerability, knowing they are unlikely to risk losing everything they have worked so hard for. Athlete A is a documentary currently on Netflix which tells the story of the American gymnasts who stood up against their abuser, USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar - and in doing so helped hundreds of other survivors come forward for justice.

20.01.2022 Empowered women, empower women!

19.01.2022 Whether accidental or intentional, placing a button on a toy in the genital area, which makes a gasping sound when pushed, rings alarm bells for us. It also giggles and sings when you tickle it on different parts of the body. The button between the legs is not mentioned on the box as a feature, so why is it even there and how exactly do you unintentionally makes a toy that has a button in an erogenous zone that gasps when you touch it? Child grooming is any activity which prepares a child for sexual activity and by definition, this toy does that. We understand that Hasbros have committed to reviewing/ removing the toy but until a full recall is issued, we encourage you to join us in signing and sharing this petition. http://chng.it/MzNxGRxFj9

19.01.2022 We are excited to announce that we have been successful in obtaining a 2020 Rural Community Grant through Westpac Foundation to assist develop program materials for our early intervention/ prevention training program: Send Noods. Send Noods addresses many of the issues young people are grappling with today including image based abuse, consent, pornography and maintaining respectful relationships. We commence working with the wonderful staff and young people at Ashley Youth Detention Centre this month on delivering this 6 week program which includes education, art therapy and counselling. Exciting times for Laurel House. Thank you Westpac for your support and belief in our program.

15.01.2022 You may have seen reports recently about an ex High Court Judge who systematically sexually harassed young female lawyers. 6 have come forward but we know from experience that there would be many more that have likely been impacted and are yet to report. What an absolute imbalance of power that must have been for those women, particularly at the start of their professional careers after many years of studying. It was just as concerning to learn that a number of other senior Legal professionals knew it was happening and did nothing to intervene or even report it. So we are giving a big shout out to @thetasmanianbar who are calling for an attitude of ZERO tolerance to sexual harassment and discrimination within the Tasmanian legal profession.

12.01.2022 Great article by Brad Chilcott, White Ribbon.

12.01.2022 Three cheers for Tasmania Police

11.01.2022 Laurel House is committed to working with all Councils in North and North West Tasmania to develop strategies to address family and sexual violence. We will advocate for them to follow the leadership of George Town Council and make the safety of their communities a priority.

10.01.2022 Fastest result ever! Never doubt the power of United voices. Congratulations to Nina Funnell and everyone involved in the #letherspeak campaign.

08.01.2022 Following on from our post about the Troll dolls, you may have become aware of the LOL dolls that reveal inappropriate clothing and messaging when placed in cold water? That includes bondage like handcuffs, fishnet stockings and lingerie with the word caution written on them. One doll has a demonic like head and face appear over the crotch area. We are backing Collective Shout and Psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg as they call for a full recall and removal of these toys for sale. Does your child have LOL dolls? It might be worth taking a closer look at what your child is playing with.

08.01.2022 The Laurel House Board give George Town Council a great big thumbs up for passing a motion today to develop a Family/Domestic and Sexual Violence strategy. The first of its kind in Tasmania! Leaders in Tasmanian Local Government

06.01.2022 After advocating for,and then celebrating, the much needed changes to our own Tasmanian legislation, it is really worrying to see Victoria take such a dangerous backward step. Join us in signing, and sharing, this petition if you too feel the Government need to better understand the ramifications these laws will have on victim-survivors.

06.01.2022 The Tamar Sunrise Rotary Club do brilliant work in the community. Can you help by sharing their post or dropping off items to help those in need?

06.01.2022 Keep it real online is a series of Kiwi advertisements that aim to educate and keep young people safe on line. We particularly like the adds because they depict very common issues and provide good examples to parents and carers on how to start conversations with young people about the issue. Studies have shown that 1 in 7 young people have, or will receive unwanted sexual solicitation online (YISS Youth Internet Safety Survey). Chances are, if it hasnt happened to your child, it will happen to someone they know. Have you had a safe online chat with your child? Do you need some help with resources or advice? Do you run an organisation or sporting club that would benefit from having our Youth Officer attend to give a free presentation? Contact us for for more information. [email protected]

06.01.2022 This We know this happens here, particularly with dress/skirt lengths.

05.01.2022 Did you see what she was wearing? She must have been asking for it!

05.01.2022 Social media can be a wonderful tool for people to socialise and feel included in various groups of interest but we also know that there are those who have sinister intentions who are using it to engage with and meet people, particularly young people. Laurel House is developing specific training to be delivered in schools, sporting clubs and recreation groups for young people that help them keep safe online and how to identify grooming when its occurring. For parents / guardians we highly recommend visiting the E-Safety Commissioner website for a whole range of tips on how to stay safe online.https://www.esafety.gov.au/ https://www.examiner.com.au//man-lured-teen-on-snapchat-b/

04.01.2022 The messages written on the image below are comments from men who viewed the rape of a 14 year old girl on Pornhub. In fact... One of the most searched terms on Pornhub is teen pornography, in fact its been in the top 10 search term on the site for six consecutive years If you are as sickened as we are, please sign the petition and share with your networks. We need to use every avenue available to us to bring awareness to this issue and advocate on behalf of the vulnerable.

02.01.2022 #StandUp #SpeakOut Family Courts Top Judge Will Alstergren has said household violence is more prevalent now than what he has ever seen in his 30 year career ... The reason for the spike is unclear and he said hes not sure if its a cultural shift and people are reporting it more but family violence is more prevalent than it has ever been He says the courts risk screening processes need to be alot better and they are continuing to develop better procedures He says - whatever we are doing we need to make sure it is in the best interest of the children Adelaide is going to be one of 3 locations where a new lighthouse project is going to be aimed at identifying and assessing risk at the early stage of the court process The aim is to ensure that people who are experiencing family violence would receive support and appropriate case management To improve the safety for litigants and on the back of Covid 19 continue with the digitisation that will allow people to attend hearings from their home or a safe environment such as a refuge or even their car He said finding ways to work through matters was more critical than ever. The longer the people are in the system the worse it is for them. Children must be the priority Divorce or Seperation does not necessarily adversely affect the kids but conflict does We are trying to counsel our clients to a situation where they are being co operative and helpful #StandUp #SpeakOut - all sounds good on paper but when you start to address Pathological Narcissim and Perjury in the Family Court you may just improve the system and protect the innocent Also just because you want it to be in the best interest of the children you have your work cut out for you to convince all the corrupt Judges, Lawyers and ICLs to do the same
