25.01.2022 Sterile water injections - who had them? Approx 30% of women experience lower back pain during labour that does not subside making her ability to cope difficult. SWI are an excellent alternative for these women wanting to remain mobile. They are drug free, easily and quickly administered and no adverse side effects for mum or bub. For some women though the intense but brief stinging sensation outweighs the analgesic effect, so be sure to speak to your midwife at your next appointment if you want more information. Myself and many of my midwives colleagues at the Mater were involved in this study. So great to see more recognition of your hard work Nigel Lee.
25.01.2022 Perinatal Mental Health is given a lot of promotion but needs more action. Please sign and share to help to get more mother & baby units into public hospitals. Anxiety and depression does not discriminate, women shouldnt need money or private health to access help.
24.01.2022 I feel very strongly about this topic. How a woman feeds her baby is her choice. Why is bottle feeding in public ok but BF mums are encouraged to feed in the toilet or away from the public eye. Breastfeeding in public is about a baby eating, yet many breastfeeding mothers feel discriminated against.... we need to change the narrative and imagery - photos of breasts seem to be widely accepted to sell products but not to provide nutrition for our babies. #promoteandsupportbreastfeeding #normalisebreastfeeding #breastfeedingconferences
24.01.2022 Could not love this advice more... what a legend!
23.01.2022 Early in my career working within a large tertiary hospital, I become acutely aware of the impact the hospital environment, and our management of women presenting in early labour had on their labour patterns, and their own expectations. I found myself involved within a quality improvement group, evaluating services and eventually completing a masters assessing the birth outcomes of women following the implementation of an innovative early labour care model in 2012. Today, all... this work condensed into the below publication (abstract only, will find fulltext link) Early labour management, although rarely validated by health professionals has the potential to set the tone for the rest of the childbirth experience... we have a lot more room for improvement, but happy to contribute to the existing body of evidence. https://www.womenandbirth.org//S1871-5192(18)3067/fulltext
23.01.2022 Yesterday we sponsored the Precious Wings Luncheon. There were tears, laughter, good food and prizes... but most of all money raised to support Precious Wings and their quest to comfort as many bereaved families as possible. If you arent familiar with the work they do please check out their pages. Talking to women and families yesterday, and hearing first hand ways they keep the memory of their little loves alive, makes me so proud to contribute to making a difference. We can all do better, speak their name, they were a little life not a little loss.
22.01.2022 Another successful Hatch Parents Xmas Party. Thank you to all the parents who brought their little loves to celebrate the magical lead up to their first Christmas, and our awesome team. Think we will need a bigger space next year!
21.01.2022 If you are a new or expecting mum or know one who needs a little extra support please share Peach Tree Perinatal Wellness.
21.01.2022 We wish we could support all our new parents find connections. Unfortunately still with restrictions as venues and resourcing our spaces at Hatch Parent Group are limited. We have included some wonderful alternative local groups in this blog if you are looking to join.
21.01.2022 I have been a midwife for 14years, 12 years of which spent in birthsuite living each and everyone of these experiences. Today I have less hands on at the birth, and boy do I miss that look. Please share to make others aware and show appreciation for the enormous contribution midwives make, and why we deserve that place in the memories of most. To all my midwife mates, you all rock https://www.buzzfeed.com/hilarywa/stop-calling-the-midwife

20.01.2022 Have your say...
20.01.2022 Follow your instincts, every baby is an individual with different temperaments, feeding and sleeping requirements. Frequent feeding in the first weeks and months of a baby life is the evolutionary and biological norm. This phase wont last. https://youtu.be/DagfgMeMSXI
18.01.2022 This man has changed the lives of so many Australian women... now its time he plans for his beautiful family to return home to their roots.. NZ women as of next year will get to benefit from his expertise and compassion. A piece of Michael will stay with all of his colleagues and friends from Eve, a man of true humility and respect for others and a champion of innovation and all things womens health. I personally will savour the next 8months we still have him onboard, but equally proud of his decision to live his best life

15.01.2022 (Note: I am not the original author) For all my healthcare friends... Thought for the day. I have heard it said many times that Healthcare workers are making jokes and not taking COVID 19 seriously. I would like to bring 4 facts to your attention.... First, to work in Healthcare you must have a sick/dark sense of humor - sorry its just a requirement. And if you arent one of us, you may not always understand. Secondly, just because we arent buying 50 cases of Baked Beans and fighting over the last can of Antibac spray or loo roll at our local supermarket , it doesnt mean we arent preparing. And most of us dont have the income to stockpile. Actually, we go to work daily not knowing what diseases we may come in contact with..... So, infection prevention and standard precautions are part of our everyday life. Third, when has mass hysteria helped any situation? Maybe we are trained to stay calm, cool, and collected in stressful situations. And last but not the least...while everyone is concerned about travel bans, government enforced quarantines, and being out of school/work for who knows how long, who do you think will still be REQUIRED to go to work? You guessed it right..!! Healthcare workers! We will go knowing that we and our families are at risk whilst we take care of yours. So.....Dont panic ...use your common sense ...be mindful of yourself and others...stay safe ... Now go wash your hands with soap and water. If you work in Healthcare, please copy and paste to your status!
15.01.2022 This post has been shared by the midwifery community, and for good reason, because we cannot express this part of our job in any fewer words. This week is Baby Loss Awareness Week 2020, when we remember all the little lives lost in pregnancy or soon after birth. The heartache for the families that we take in our heart, the struggle to believe there is a reason... I remember them all
14.01.2022 Wonderful blog written by Dr Thea Bowler... Just like your friends and family, we are here to help and support you through your journey so you can get onto living your best life.

12.01.2022 A few colleagues and I headed south, swapped out singlets for cardigans to attend #breastfeedingconference #turningthetide Day 1 reinforced existing knowledge and introduced new knowledge. Enjoying the town of Warrnambool and being a tourist on our way down ticking off the great ocean road and the apostles.
12.01.2022 Lets get real... for PANDA week (Perinatal anxiety and depression awareness) Such an inspiring and raw presentation put on by Belmont - Empowered Women with Rachel Thaiday high tea. When we open up and talk, it gives others permission to do the same. We owe it to our friends, our family, and our community to have those difficult conversations. For anyone that is struggling or knows someone who they think is showing signs of depression or anxiety - speak up. National PANDA Helpline: 1300 726 306 9am-7.30pm AEST.

10.01.2022 Celebrating the most popular time of year to make babies
10.01.2022 "In a study of 3079 children evaluated at 10 years of age, gestational age at birth was linearly associated with global and regional brain volumes. Longer gesta...tional duration was associated with larger brain volumes; for example, every 1-week-longer gestational duration corresponded to an additional 4.5 cm3/wk (95% CI, 2.7-6.3 cm3/wk) larger total brain volume." What does that mean in lay terms? Simple. There are advantages to waiting for your baby to decide when to be born. And one of them is that waiting longer means their brain volume can develop more. So much so that a difference can still be seen ten years later. For every extra week the baby stays in your womb, the brain grows by an extra 4.5 cubic centimetres of brain volume. Another good reason to weigh up ALL the pros and cons of interventions such as induction of labour and elective caesarean section before making the decision that is right for you and your baby. 07.01.2022 In most countries of the world, parents will be asked whether they want their baby to have vitamin K, usually within the first hour of birth. Its your decisi...on whether or not your baby has vitamin K. Its also up to you to decide which kind of vitamin K (oral or injection) you want your baby to have. So youll want to weigh up the pros and cons, as with every decision youll make for your child. I have been researching vitamin K for more than twenty years, and I have written several books and information leaflets on this subject. Ive just posted the most recent on my website. I have written this blog post to give a summary of some of the key facts that you might want to consider when making your decision. https://www.sarawickham.com/ar/information-about-vitamin-k/ #midwife #midwifery #doula #birthdoula #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducator #childbirth #positivebirth #evidence #drsarawickham #youdoyou #womanempowerment #whatsrightforme #consent #womensrights #vitamink #parents See more

04.01.2022 Paula is a golden find, I knew this instantly when interviewing Paula for a position at Eve Health. A part from her compassion, generosity and wealth of knowledge, Paula works tirelessly as a member on several working parties and committees to bring education and awareness for reducing stillbirth rates in Australia. I have placed my vote for midwife of the year. Well done Paula, so proud to call you a colleague and friend.
